Installing Novalis - here are some pics and questions

We are installing the Novalis 'golden oak' vinyl wood tiles in our main floor right now and I have a few questions. First of all, let me say how I LOVE the look of this floor. It is very easy to put down and went pretty quick!

I had researched this well before buying the Novalis and had trouble finding anything bad said about them! I am so nervous about them coming up though. We put them down in the family room last night. We cleaned the slab, filled any holes and primed it with Henry latex tile primer. I don't know how thick you're supposed to put it on, but it looked fine to me. I wanted to see how well they were stuck and I can peel some of them up with my fingers. Should that happen??

Any advice would be great!!! Thanks!!

Hi Citymom,

Looks great. In another thread someone said they heated theirs with a hairdryer to soften the glue, then stuck books on it for a few hours. So, maybe try that and then leave it alone. :-)

Someone else slid around the floor to help the glue adhere.
Did you use a rolling pin as recommended or something else?

I do have one question--what did you use to fill in the holes in your tile? I have tile with little pock marks (an intentional "bubble hole" or something) and I've got 14 boxes of Novalis just waiting to be installed.

How long did it take to do your room?

They told me to clean with pine sol or Mr. Clean. What did you use?

Hi!! I think we will try to heat it up a little to make sure it sticks. We did use the rolling pin as well. I wonder if we should rent a roller??

For cleaning, we actually used our carpet shampooer set on the hard floor option. Our slab had tons of construction debris and joint compound and this REALLY helped. We just used warm water in it. Then I mopped it with my Mr. Clean.

We bought the Henry brand hole filler from Lowe's - it's the same brand as the latex tile primer and is right next to it on the shelf in the back.

It took a couple of nights to prep the floor and then it only took about an hour and a half or so to put it all down. Like other things, the prep work is what took so long! But if you were putting it down over existing flooring, it'd be a lot easier!!

We brought the gunstock color home, but it didn't look as real to me as the golden oak. It was very pretty, but a little too dark for our house. We have dark furniture so this looks better here~

I wonder which way you want to face when sitting out on the deck? If you expect to face inward, toward the house, I'd construct permanent benches with backs in place of railings on the two outer sides of the deck -- could be centered on each side with breaks in the corners, or wrap that outer corner of the deck with an L-shaped bench, depending on how you prefer access to the grass. Put flip-top seats on the benches, use the bottom for storage, something like you see on the top deck of a ferry boat. Then as karinl suggested, a medium to large tree some distance off that corner so it doesn't crowd the deck, but would still provide partial shade. Other than that I'd keep it really simple. If you do use pots, get the largest you can find. Dinky pots are clutter and don't support life, big pots are a statement, and plants will actually gorw in them. If you prefer to face outward from the house, get whatever table and chairs suit you for the patio, plus at least two loungers for the deck. If you can't do a partial pergola, two market umbrellas will do the trick. Then plant a vignette garden on the slope on the far side of the swale -- maybe a hummingbird or butterfly garden with a small ornamental tree behind it. In other words, create a view to look at from your deck and patio, the garden equivalent of the aquarium in the dentist's office. Use some plants that will give structure and endure year-round, then fill in with seasonals and annuals.

Sorry I missed this, yoliewoo. My floor was pretty level. I did have to sand a few areas down a bit. How did it go? I did "discover" the following problem which I just posted about on the longer Novalis thread. Did you experience this (below)? I've gotta learn how to upload a photo. I do like that it's not as hard to walk on as I'd thought. ------ I posted a while ago about my Novalis planks. I remain pretty happy about them with one exception. In between some of the planks you can see a thin strip of the grey that's under the flooring image. I wonder if it's because the floor might not be perfectly level? In some cases it looks like there's a little tiny gap between planks where I can slide a fingernail in, but in others, the gaps look very tight and I can't. Dunno. But...I tried heating and walking all over them, weighing them down, etc. No luck. So, I was thinking I might have to pull some up, run some brown ink or something on them, and put them down again. Maybe there's a better work around. Ideas? Thanks!

Summer~ I would definitely look into Flexitec if I were you (it may be spelled Flexitech...?), I love it. You also have a choice between textured or slick, mine is textured. Lilly~ The doors are real wood, I found the pamphlet for this MH in a drawer after we bought it & it lists them as being chestnut... Not sure though, the prev. owner said they were oak, so I don't know. The actual cabinets feel like paneling on the front, I would assume they're the pressed wood you're referring to. I wish they matched better, but I can't think of anyway to accomplish that. I thought about finding some veneer (I think that's what it's called) that matched the doors, & putting on the front of the cabinets & putting the doors back on over that, but haven't looked into it yet. I cleaned my range hood very well, but it still has some stains. I had thought about trying to paint it, but haven't had the guts to try. Thanks for you tips though, doesn't sound too difficult. Was your's also metal looking? What is that? Aluminum? Could you post a pic of it? Thanks to all for looking! ~Mc_Hudd

Oceanna, yes, I am loving the Novalis. Thanks for passing on so much valuable info about it! And here's the best part......the bathroom floor cost a big whopping $38 to do! I love that it has texture to it and therefore even looks better than laminate. Now he did complain it didn't want to stick all that well. He did use the primer also. But he stomped around on it and used the blow drying some and had the heater going, and he said it got a lot stickier. DH is a real go-getter, he leaves me in the dust. Oceanna, isn't it funny how you don't notice the stickers on the toilet and the color of the register cover until you see pictures? Where do you get wood-look tone register covers? At Lowes? Ok, FWIW, I have heard really bad things about that Allure stuff. Mainly that it doesn't last.

Ah...good to know. I'm still ripping up carpet and think I need to put down some self-leveling compound. Am eager to lay the flooring. Hard to go wrong when it's so affordable.
