Anyone tried Google's new recipe search?

I heard something on TV yesterday about Google launching a recipe search. I was looking for something to do for dinner that would use up stuff in my fridge and freezer so I tried it. I often google a list of ingredients, but even when I add the word 'recipe', it brings up non-recipe results, so I like that it's specific.

I searched shrimp and spinach. Then feta popped up on the ingredient list and I remembered I had an almost-expired package of that, too. So I checked 'yes' on the feta. Then I found the bottom end of a jar of preserved lemons. I still haven't decided what to make...

I have used it before, but I used it in a strange way.

I try out differtent interesting ingredients and recipes. I believe you can get more authentic by using native recipes. So I use Google Translate to translate the English name of an ingredient to the native language, and many recipes will come up. Then I use Google Translate and translate the recipes into English.

It really doesn't take that long to do.

For instance, for French onion soup, I get this recipe:

INGREDIENTS
Pour 4 personne(s)

1 kg d'oignons
50 gr de beurre
10 cl de vin blanc sec ou de biÃ¯Â¿Â½re
1 litre de bouillon de volaille ou de boeuf ou 1 bouillon cube
1 branchette de thym
1 feuille de laurier
Sel
Poivre du moulin
Piment d'Espelette (facultatif)

I read about it too. So I gave it a try and it's pretty cool. It does weed out the garbage. :-)

When you click in the margin to the right of the results it even brings up more info but the printing is pretty small.

Well, the "Lady Grey" tins had no expiration dates that I could read properly but I bought one. The "Prince of Wales" I bought is best used by 2012. I made a comment to the owner about expiration dates again, but he said "They just don't put them on do they?" Then he tried to convince me that the dates were only "shelf dates" and should not be sold after that. Well, I told him as he rang up a box of "Yorkshire Gold" tea bags that I gave a gift of this YG (purchased at his shop) to a friend one time and found out later it was nearly 2yrs. old! He said he doesn't understand the difference in taste really - oh brother. I answered it "Tastes like straw when old!" ha. he just smiled. Anyway, my box of YG is good until November of 2010 - 40bags to a box - how will I ever drink all of those before November? If anyone wants to sample Yorkshire Gold send me your address and I'll slip several or more bags into an envelope! And I also bought a small box of 20 Lapsang Souchong tea bags to try again. It has such an exotic smokey flavor that I didn't want to buy an entire tin. The shop owner also told me that Twinings is no longer going to offer the small packs of 6 bags. Have to buy boxes of 20bgs. in the future.

I have to make fudge (the old standby recipe that uses marshmallow fluff) and this year I'm trying a pumpkin fudge for a neighbor who loves the stuff. Have to make choc covered cherries because my daughter loves helping with those. We're either going to do Torrone or divinity (depending on how much time I have). I'm realizing I'm quickly running out of time, I'm barely getting the christmas tree decorated. I got the outside decorated last weekend since it was nice weather, but I haven't even started shopping for presents yet. I'm attempting homemade marshmallows this weekend, definitely strawberry ones covered in chocolate and vanilla covered in chocolate and rolled in graham crackers, for teacher presents. I figured since my daughter always wants to give her teachers presents then she can learn to make them. She even has a chef jacket and hat. The love cancels out the calories. Paula's recipes are healthy (not physical health but definitely psychologically - they make you feel good when you eat them). Everything's better with butter :-)

Firefox ... another quick way also (for many things); 1.Enter about:config into the address bar and hit Enter. 2.Press the "I"ll be carefull." button. 3.Enter browser.urlbar.maxRichResults in the Filter field. Right click and edit. 4.Set it to any number of suggestions.

Veat is another meat substitute that I've seen at both health food stores and grocery stores (Shaws here in New Hampshire). I have never tried it, so I have nothing to compare it to. I know what ketterng means about it tasting close to chicken. My husband and i have been vegetarian for about 4 years now, but I have to admit I miss the flavor of chicken - I was a chicken fan prior to my vegetarian days. My husband says the flavor frightened him in my recipe and I sat back and sighed remembering my "chicken days". I understand many vegetarians don't want something that tastes like meat/chicken, but as someone who ate meat for 38 years, I missed those things in my favorite recipes. I didn't eat meat because I enjoyed a dead animal, I ate it because i grew up eating it and enjoyed the flavors. Once I realized that the flavor is still available and NO animal was abused or died for me to have it, I was thrilled. To each his own, but I'm glad for Quorn and the other substitutes. Lori

I use and love the foodily.com search engine that Carol mentioned. The format is especially attractive and user friendly.

I prefer Google's regular search over the new Google Recipe.

The new Google Recipe search brings up recipes from all the big commercial sites, like Food Network and About.com, Epicurious, Martha Stewart, etc...

A regular google search brings up recipes from a wider variety of websites, like our Cooking forum, blog sites, etc...

When I'm looking for something new I tend to search Tastespotting and Foodgawker.

Ann, I think I agree. After a couple of searches I realized I wasn't getting any recipes from blogs. It is fun to filter out ingredients though.

Foodily.com is cool, too, but slow on my dialup (as are Tastespotting and Foodgawker...anything with pictures, darnit). And it didn't bring up more specific results when I grouped search terms using quotation marks.
