hardwood vs. laminate - cost

Just got a flooring quote for our house. A large part of the main level will be one flooring type - either hardwood or laminate. I expected the hardwood to cost more. The quoted price for a yellow birch floor is about the same as the price for a middle-of-the-line Armstrong laminate. (differs by 5 cents per sq. ft) The price includes labor and materials. I can see the materials costing about the same (my Internet searches indicate that prices per sq. foot on these two particular products are similar) but it seems to me that hardwood installation must be much more labor intensive. Does this seem correct to you?

I'm confused and disappointed b/c had I known hardwood floors could be so comparable in price to laminate, I would have looked more seriously at the hardwoods. Perhaps I should mention that the flooring person knows exactly what our allowance is and managed to come in just $1000.00 over it.

Thank you for any comments
