Help - What's the Best Hardwood Flooring

I am building a new home. We have two active young kids, two dogs and a lot of traffic. What is the best, sturdiest, scratch resistant hardwood flooring that you would recommend? We are also looking for a dark hardwood flooring (which we may have to stain to get the dark brownish or reddish color that we want)? Hence, in addition to your recommedations, we would also love to see your pictures. Thanks.

It's what you like that is the best. In a previous house, we had select and better white oak. 2 toddlers, 2 labs a cat and lots of activity. The oak was almost impervious to the abuse it took. White oak stains well and has lots of character. So maybe take that as a guide and go the janka hardness table for various species of wood since there are many that are much harder than the white oak. I think the harder and more natural darkness of the wood (like ipe I believe) the harder it will be to get it to take stain, acheive the color you want or to take stain evenly. That said, ther are many available now at not too outrageously priced that may achieve the color you want with out staining it. For example, ipe and cumaru are both (from what I have seen) reddish brown in color with ipe being much darker of the two. Both rate over 3500 on the janka scale while white oak pushes about 1360.

Others here can probably advise you better of the difficulties of dealing with these super hard woods though. I have only seen the finished product in friends houses or what I have seen online.

Anyway, white oak is sort of an average price to start with and then you can go form there as to color, hardness,ease to work with (stain/sand/finish etc) and price.

Ok the hardest wood besides brazlian cherry is Mesquite (as in Texas not brazilian). It doesn't require staining as it naturally turns a lovely reddish brown, does not come in wide planking (due to size of tree), and is considered to be green as its a quick growing trash tree. I have taken a steak knife with all my force to it and barely put a hint of a mark in it. May be hard to find in your area and can't be gotten at a "box" store. Its absolutely gorgeous looking, but you do need to find someone knowledgeable about it.

I literally tried to do so many of these solutions that I could find all over the internet and none of them worked for me at least. My cat used to be the type that would kick her litter out of the box and then pee on it and that's why it was on my floor in the first place. I ended up just buying a thin hard bristled scrub brush and Pledge Gentle Wood Floor Cleaner from Walmart and I got down and scrubbed it out of the grains of my wood floor. It got it all out though! This may mess with the longevity of the floor but honestly I am in an apartment and I just need the stain to be gone. I guess if you need to you can get wood refinishing polish but I don't even think the apartments here got finished in the first place. Lmao. I hope this can help someone!

Help! How best to clean polyurethane-coated hardwood floors

I had the same problem when we had our floors all sanded and finished with polyurethane. Even though we hung sheets between the rooms, dust got on everything. Use a slightly damp rag and change the cloth frequently. It will be a lot of work. But it will look great when you're done.

What floors look best next to hardwood-look tile floors?

The best DESIGN option = same tile throughout. The sad thing is the tile may no longer be available. Now you are into some weird design elements that no one explained at the time you installed the wood-look tile. In essence you have "wet" areas that are covered in "wood". You are now looking at having to put traditional looking tile or stone in the living areas normally reserved for wood. This is Bass Akwards in the eyes of many (myself included). Personally, being a cork flooring expert, I would replace carpet with cork floating flooring. It is soft and quiet and is NOT wood looking. But I know cork and I know how to live with its eccentricities. I'm 1% of the population. The other 99% can't handle cork. In an ideal world, you would have used a stone look tile in the kitchen areas and a wood-look tile for the rest of the house because that's traditionally where you would put wood. I would check to see if you can find the original wood-look tile. Be aware you will have issues with colour - assuming you can find the same product. What is the best brand cleaner for the hardwood floor?

Loba makes it's own floor cleaner. They sell the 'kits' with the microfibre mop/head and a premixed bottle of product + concentrate. Go ahead and purchase the Loba cleaner. The reason why WET swiffers are not allowed: 1. The cloth heads are TOO WET 2. The spray swiffers add product directly to the floor = no-no! And to be very very clear: a hardwood 'cleaner' isn't needed (95% of the time you use something else). You priority for cleaning = 1. Sweeping or vacuuming (turn off beater bar) every 1-2 days 2. ONCE per week: damp, water only, cleaning (clean microfibre mop head) 3. ONCE per MONTH: damp, floor cleaner applied to mop head. The ISSUE with most hardwood floor cleaners are not the products themselves but the HOMEOWNERS who use them TOO MUCH. Wood is NOT allowed 'wet'. It can handle damp (as in the cloth is almost dry) so that it picks up the excess dander/dust that sweeping misses. That's all the wood NEEDS. What the HOMEOWNER needs??? That's a different issue. The WOOD doesn't need heavy cleaning.

It is the finish that scratches not the wood. So the darker the finish, the more the scratches are going to show since the wood underneath is lighter. We have red oak, 3 inch boards with a natural semi gloss (3 coats) on site finished. You can see all the grain through the finish since it is essentially a clear finish. This means you don't notice scratches, imperfections etc. and keeps the poodle out of hot water. It also doesn't show dirt or dust that easily in case you don't want to spend all your time mopping it.

your happiness is going to be based on a happy medium of picking a wood with a lot of character (graining) so that when the scratches appear they won't be very obvious. Some of the handscraped looks have a lot of texture with lots of character. Picking a smooth finish in a clear grain such as maple is guaranteed to show every little nick and blemish. It is the finish thats important and aluminum oxide on prefinished is very hard and durable, but its also a combination as mentioned that will help. Don't make a buying decision based on hardness only.
