Can we put ceramic tile in old 'raised bungalow' without cracking

Hello. My sister just bought an old "raised bungalow" that she wants to fix up. It's in great shape except for some ugly cabinets, floors, and countertops in the kitchen. The inspector told her to steer away from ceramic tile floors in the kitchen because they would probably crack. She doesn't want to go through the hassle or expense of putting extra supports under the home.

Can you put ceramic in these older homes without cracking? What about porcelain or slate? As of now it's some sort of stick down vinyl tile.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

bridget
