Need expert's opinion on vinyl sheet choice

After much angst I've decided vinyl sheeting is the optimal choice for my kitchen redo. That said, the displays are just overwhelming me and I get nothing but snobbery from the local tile mega-outlet staff. I'm hoping to narrow down my choices a bit here so I can go back better armed, get color samples and make my selection. There are just so many displays I'm lost where to begin.

FWIW, my upper cabs are painted white, base cabs are chocolate cherry, Kashmir white granite, white subway backsplash, molding/trim painted white and wall paint is yet undecided but I am leaning toward cool blue/green rather than warm yellow/green.

It's a heavily trafficked kitchen, with direct entry from the outside in a full four-season climate so I'd like a pretty good quality but don't need ultra-premium as it's just not an ultra-premium house. Three teens, no pets. I'd like a stone look, lightish greige marbling, with grout lines of 16x16 if possible. Does such a thing exist?

While exploring floor options I picked up some Permastone (?) and DuraCeramic tiles whose overall finish I liked -- very textured, no gloss, a really nice look. Is that practical or even possible to try and obtain in sheet vinyl, especially in a light color? I would think all that texturing would trap fine dirt and grit and require scrubbing.

Thanks for any pointers.

yes, i think there is a thread here somewhere on duraceramic - saying it does catch the dirt etc. that was the last straw for me - back to straight sheet vinyl!!

try armstrong sheet vinyl - and congoleum for what you are looking for... i found a plain beigey color tile pattern with grout lines for my 'floor idea folder'.

as much as i like gardenias, i would caution you to be aware that they can suffer winter kill if you site them in an exposed area and if you are in zone 7. cleyera (ternstroemia) has beautiful foliage. depending on your zone, pittosporum could be a candidate. hollies might be the best option.

Very likely within the next 30 years every variety of every grown fruit and vegetable will be able to be DNA matched (for a fee). At such a time we may also find out the true relationship between many similar appearing varieties and trace tomatoes back to a remote village in the Bolivian foothills. Until then people can speculate. I'm growing Aunt Rubys German Green and Cherokee Green yet I could never tell the difference between the two by looking at the fruit. When I tell a customer the variety name for a particular tomato they ask in amazement how I know and I usually tell them that I remember picking that specific tomato and in doing so I recalled the unique fruit appearance. Dispite growing over 200 heirloom varieties, by glancing up at the variety tag while picking fruits it is often easy to reidentify an heirloom. Its amazing how many customers will also attempt to ID a specific fruit and sometimes they are correct. Other times I'll just say "You're close but this is the twin sister to that one, *****".

@ triggstudio24 - thank you for pointing out (via the quote from your flooring friend) that there are MANY levels of "Armstrong Vinyl"...and that you Luxe Plank is the top of the top. Too many people forget that what you see in a big box store isn't the same quality as what you see at "fine flooring stores" locally run by the owners. There can be huge differences in quality when it comes to big name "off branding" to the big box stores. It is very confusing for people shopping for flooring.

I am going to put a plug in for Marmoleum. 1. It will be much more comfortable for you to walk on a linoleum floor than a tile floor. The work done in a kitchen is mostly done standing up, and tile floors are hard on the back and knees. 2. A linoleum floor is totally in keeping with the age and style of your home. 3. You can make your kitchen a modern look if that's what pleases you, but your other choices are traditional (hardware is very traditional, Shaker cabinets can go either way). If you like a modern look go for it all the way. If you are happier in a traditional setting then I think linoleum is the way to go, or a smaller tile. 4. Marmoleum gives you many, many choices of color. Check out the Click option, or go for a sheet installation. The one caveat I will tell you is that you need to use a very skilled installer and that might be hard to schedule in San Fran. Or maybe there are many around in a place with such pricey real estate. In my (very large) city there is really only one guy and we had to wait a few weeks for him. We put cork down under our sheet product and we love love love how it feels and looks. Sheet vinyl is an excellent flooring choice. Just make sure you're buying a quality product (read top of the line...expensive) from a well-known manufacturer.

Thanks! The Armstrong web site had the best selection of samples and information. I also found an online store that has all their lines nicely commented and organized, which is proving helpful. Don't know that I'd order online sight unseen, though. The Kiev sand is a good color choice, although I'm thinking I'll probably want a higher quality given how hard we are on the floor in this room.

I wouldn't order sight unseen either. it is a good way to see options and weed out the real 'nos'. I have also found that often what i like online, I do not like in real. some that look beigey online are more toward the pinky/blush color in real etc. I am using it to make a list of what i want to see when I go to a major flooring store tho. I'd buy from a local store also.

i noticed a few rather nice ones (plain and more beige/gold in color) on Armstrong in the past few days that I do not remember seeing there even 1 month ago! hopefully 1 or 2 of those will be ok when i see them in real.

who knew picking this stuff out would be so much work and so time consuming? I didn't! lol! I am limiting myself to sheet vinyl that can be floated tho. seems easiest and best for me - and no glue smell!

jacy - have you seen the Armstrong Alterna product? If so, any opinions versus the sheet vinyl?

We're going to be looking at the Alterna samples later this month after exploring the Armstrong sheet vinyl for a compare.

Wondering if you've done a similar compare.
