What type of information are you looking for?

If your new to investing, I'd suggest visiting the regulatory agency links first. Much better to learn how NOT to lose money before you give your money to someone to manage!

The Wall Street Journal looks at some of the best Web sites for investors:

One of the best sites we found was MSN's MoneyCentral. It took only about two minutes to create our portfolio here, one of the shortest set-ups. The site provides dozens of specific ways to analyze stocks, with another 50 features offered through a quickly downloadable "Investment Toolbox" -- for example, price indicators, stock-split details and real-time stock-price charts.

MoneyCentral is very navigable and user-friendly, offering sections like "Get It Done" that lets investors quickly jump around to different areas. Still, there wasn't much bond information, and the news offerings on the smaller stocks and funds were slim.

Yahoo's finance site also offers a lot of detail about portfolio holdings, good real-time news from wire services, and neatly distinguished stock, mutual-fund, and bond centers. It is not the best organized, however, and can overwhelm users with all of the data available. Views of aggregated portfolio holdings are tough to follow, and setting up our portfolio here took the longest -- close to seven minutes -- since it took a while to figure out how to enter all of the data. Better research and real-time quotes can be purchased for a monthly fee of $11 to $14.

SmartMoney.com, which is part-owned by Dow Jones (which also owns The Wall Street Journal) offers some of the best charting on the Web. Charts are big and readable, and price changes can be tracked easily. The site itself also offers plenty of market news. Creating and monitoring a portfolio here, however, can mean muddling through quite a few advertisements and pop-ups.

Morningstar.com, which is more known for mutual-fund research, offers an impressive portfolio tracker that can also include bonds and cash holdings, unlike some of the other sites surveyed. It's also easy to dig into market-index data at the site.

The only thing Dave has said that I can disagree with, is that it's 'simple' to find all your posts by typing in your user name in a search. Yes, it does bring up all your posts, but it doesn't bring them up in chronological order. If you've been here for years as many have, you could have many pages of posts to review before you might stumble upon your most recent posts. I gave up on trying to find my posts in that way. I did decide to 'check the box' on each thread I post to, so that it will be sent to my email. That was not easy either. I had to contact support because after repeated efforts to set my account to allow emails, it wasn't changing it. Once I did contact Tamara, they did change it and now I do get emails for the threads I'm following. But, I don't always get them and sometimes they come into my email box days later. lol But, for now, that is working the best so far for trying to keep up with threads I am following. But my email box is now needing a lot more time weeding out. I use the Cornell site to read reviews on different vegetable varieties and like that site. I have however started following others' suggestions that Google/Gardenweb searches turn up better results than GW and have found that works better for me sometimes. I try the search function and if the results are just too random and I find myself *sighing*, I just start a new thread and ask for what I need. edit: I see someone above has said, that sometimes other members 'insist I do a search'. I have rarely had that happen to me, thankfully. My way of looking at it is, that every subject we discuss is a repeat of some earlier discussion. Some of the forums, especially over the winter, are so inactive, that any discussion is a bonus, even a repeat one. If we all did searches and found the answers we needed, we wouldn't need to be discussing live every day. And btw, even if you find posts on the subject you are looking for, they are not always giving you what you want. Sometimes there will be 3 posts on a thread. A recent speaker warned newbies not to start marketing veggies until they had two things: a fence and an irrigation system. I'm just a tiny market gardener who hardly makes anything each year, but my first investment was a fence. White tail deer in the east can jump an 8 foot fence, but usually won't. I have an old barbed wire fence that is in rickety shape, but put a 6 foot welded wire fence 6 feet inside the barbed wire one. The deer don't seem to want to jump that much horizontal span, so I rarely have had any problem with deer over the last few years. However, once a rabbit or woodchuck gets in (when the gate is open presumably) he get "locked in." A live trap or a .22 works to solve those problems. Expecting most other solutions to work may be unrealistic, especially in certain years when the deer population is large, as they are forced to seek food where they normally might not bother. So the non-fence protection things work depending on the deer pressure. I love to wish people good luck in growing, but if they think they can outsmart nature in all years without fencing, I think they'll need a lot more than my good luck wishes. Ann

Dave is NOT a financial planner, nor does he pass himself off as one. He is, however, very knowledgeable in his field, which is mortgages and equity - how people handle their debt, in other words. The only true financial planners are Certified Financial Planners (CFP), who specialize in estate and financial planning, either through annual fees (percentage of investible portfolio) or hourly. They are registered and licensed. No stock broker or any kind of financial advisor who is not a CFP, has any true fiduciary responsibility when handling your money. Note I said handling, not advising. You can take advice from anyone, even me or Dave. But you don't want anybody EXCEPT someone with fiduciary (e.g., legal) responsibility, to be handling your money. Many people get confused and think financial planners are those guys who give "free" seminars and then try to railroad you into buying insurance you don't need or wild'n'wacky hedge funds. But people who are the "real deal" in the CFP world don't operate that way. It isn't worth their while - most of them have minimums of at least $250K for a client's portfolio. Those are liquid funds for investing, not your house equity or stock options. And many go even higher, to $1M+ needed in liquidity before you can become a client.

lestard, I do some trading, on-line, through Fidelity. It is simple and I don't need a broker. Just do it on my computer. This allows me to check in each day to see what my stock is doing. Jim Cramer has never recommended a dangerous stock. He highly recommended Annaly which is a real estate Reit which pays a high dividend. I've held it for over a year and it only fluctuates a few points, up or down. If it begins to 'tank', I'll sell it. We have our retirement accounts with a brokerage firm and I suggested Annaly to our broker. He bought some (not alot) for the dividend in our portfolio. When I bought it I paid $16.00 a share. It hit $18.00 today. I just got my dividend last month. Pays every quarter. I'm not complaining! There are a few good REITS which are worth checking out. E.F. Moody is also in Ca, and has a LOT of good info on his site.

You might want to look at his site first before wading through everything else!

Hello, I'm Sue and I'm lazy. Please tell me how a 'money manager', 'investment broker', whatever(!) earns his daily bread. Not talking about a 'certified financial advisor' who charges a set rate or percentage of portfolio, but a service that holds your paper and issues monthly reports -- little buying or selling -- mostly mutual funds held -- includes a money market fund and checking account.

I'm blinded by that teeny type.
