1st: Everyone has different comfort preferences, sleeping positions, and perhaps neck-back-hip issues . . so there is no single answer.
2nd: Polyurethane, slow recovery (memory) foam, and latex all have a different feel. Animation
3rd: The results may be relevant to the thickness of the topper, and the type of mattress and bedbase it is placed over.

Might be prudent to wait and see if a topper is actually needed.

I did not mean to be inconsiderate in any way. I am short of time, and did not do my research on this site before posting. I apoligize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I really appreciate being able to post here, and getting the input from others, so I am sorry to have caused any problems.

maryil--No need to apoligize; I wouldn't have seen your post there. Anyways, buy the foam mattress topper. Dorm room beds are hard and covered in a zippered plastic!!! You might also want a good 100% cotton mattress pad to go on top of the foam to avoid sweating. I bought my son's from bed bath & beyond. Buy a middle of the road one not a cheap one. I think I spent around $20.

I wouldn't get less than a 2 inch pad in the memory foam. I read an article once somewhere on the internet that said at least 2 inches and make sure the density isn't real low. I believe there is 3, 4 and maybe 5 lb density. We have 2 on our bed, and it makes a huge difference. Dittos on the mattress pad--

I don't think there is ANY harm in posting in both places..if someone doesn't want to read..no one is making them. As far as I know, you can't remove posts once they are made...I see NO problem as far as I am concerned with posts in both places. I think personally it was rude to complain of such when tons of these forums will show multiple posts. This is a slow moving forum on top of it. I guess there are cranky people on the net just as in real life. I am sorry for that.

As far as the foam...buy the thickest you can. I love mine. I have the dense 2 inch pad on top of a brand new mattress. I paid about 150 dollars for it. Keep in mind, don't buy cheap...you get what you pay for..I would not be without..it is like sleeping in a cloud. I never want to get out of the darn thing and I rarely wake with a backache anymore. I have less than desirable sleeping habits that often caused back troubles. They are rare now...I believe it is the pad that is the answer in combination with a memory pillow for necks. My two children just graduated from College in recent years and I wish those pads would of exsisted for them but they did not then...or at least not in my area. I would definately buy one for a college student. Those beds are nasty...and who knows what slept on them or how clean they were kept...dust mites I am sure abound in them. Don't hesitate...but check your size..you may or may not need extra long. Congradulations on sending your child off to college..it is a exciting and fun road to watch your children travel.

Sometimes the college housing sells them and along with the linens that fit their beds. Don't forget; this is for a college student in a dorm room. This isn't a life time investment; unless you have twin xl at home, or your child has back problems.

Sometimes you wonder if college kids don't regressed back to preschool. If it isn't your child you worry about throwing up on it(or worse) than it's the roommates or friends. Oh, the stories I could tell you from my son's first year of dorm life. A whole new forum could be devoted to parents of college age kids.
