refinishing oak floor question

Hi,

I have 1920 era tongue and groove oak floors under wall to wall carpeting. I want to remove the carpet and just reseal the floors. The floors look in good shape, except I would have to fill and stain the holes left by the tack strips. I read that I would have to match the original topcoat (laquer, vs varnish vs whatever). Is it possible to lightly sand off the topcoat without affecting the stain color and then just apply polyurethane or whatever is used today to protect wood floors? (What is the best thing to protect a wood floor?) Thanks you for your help.
