Wood/wood like flooring choices: Please help us decide on a plan
Comments (19)Skeeter: We do want real wood but the reality is that we are on a budget and are trying to look ahead some. We could do real wood and have a 1.5 inch height difference w/out raising the other floor height but that wouldn't work well over all: we don't think it would work right and if we ever move in either of our aging parents then it becomes a tripping haazard. We could raise the level of the other floors but again that isn't really cost efficient unless tile can be raised that much using thinset mortar which I don't think can. Engineered wood floors seem like our best option. I like the look: some of the better ones look no different than solid wood. I've read that they wear well, too. But again we would not be able to use the nail down type or we will end up in the same situation that the solid wood floors would pose. We are going to have to find a good quality glue down or floating engineered floor....See Moreno glue, no click lock, no nail engineered floor?
Comments (8)Before glueless floating wood floors, you had to use a PVA type II adhesive, on the tongue or in the groove, and the use of strap clamps to compress, for a tight fit. Properly milled flooring capable of gluing t&G are still made. Not all engineered can be floated. Some have to sloppy of a T&G to do so. Those are usually gluedown only....See MoreMy Kitchen Needs Color
Comments (39)mom2sethc, wow, I love your kitchen! My cabinets do look a lot like yours color wise, but a little lighter. You're right. Here are two SW mock-ups I just did. Sorry, I forgot to mask back the ceiling light. Bamboo Shoot. But the color looks way different on this mock painting job than the color looks in your kitchen. Here is SW's Red Cent, which is an 89% match to BM's Audubon Russet, which was also a suggestion. I'm also considering a green like BM's Medieval Times or Valspar's Organic Garden. I can't find a SW color to match to do a mock painting though. Finally, I think my backsplash area needs some tile to pull my kitchen together. I left the brown there in these pictures since I'm thinking tile and not a color. Thanks for all the help. I can tell everyone here knows how important getting the right color really is. Comments (17)Good link to provide amysrq, that explains a lot! We have engineered Mannington Hickory floors in our home, and I have been very pleased with how well they've worn. We have had four dogs, three cats, grandchildren and regular family foot traffic with shoe and heels without any noticeable scratching or wear. Most of the flooring was installed ten years ago, the remainder was put in two years ago, so our entire lower level is hardwood. A hammer dropped once left a slight ding in the kitchen. The ice maker on our frig broke one night and left a 4 x 5 foot puddle of water standing on the kitchen floors overnight. We mopped up the water, opened up the windows, kept a fan blowing and allowed several days for the floors to dry, and you can't tell now where the water stood. This flooring was not the premium line of hardwood that Mannington carries, either, it is probably considered mid-level. One feature I liked is that I was able to match the newer flooring exactly with what had been installed initially - something to consider if you're only doing certain areas at a time. Although hickory isn't way up there on the hardiness/harness list, ours has held up very well. My son just had Brazilian cherry installed in his house, and has already seen dings and scratches. Consequently, he doesn't let his dogs come inside the house anymore, and asks everyone to leave their shoes at the door. I'd hate to have something that sensitive that you couldn't live life as usual inside your own home! I do think it's imperative that you purchase from a well-known reputable manufacturer, even if installing it yourself. Mannington Hickory in Nutmeg finish...See More- 14 years ago
