Vinegar question...

So I just drained some dark flakey stuff off my apple cider vinegar - kind of a dark residue in the glass bottle. What is this stuff? Has this ever happened to you?

It was a quart bottle of White House cider vinegar, the usual brand I buy. Only about less than 1 cup left in the bottle. My wine vinegars don't usually have this crud in the bottom of the bottle.

Should I buy a smaller pint bottle next time so it will be used up more quickly?

Yeah....it happens. I Don't know what it is....I just pour off the rest and leave the crud behind.
It's not mother...and it's likely not vinegar eels....just crud.

Yuck! I'd take it back too. Since most of us do canning because we like the flavor of real food, using the best quality ingredients produces the best flavor, and "colored" vinegar isn't at all the same! I can't believe the "cost cutting" food manufacturers do these days. I was just at our state fair, and they were giving away "Crustables" samples (pre-made sandwiches without crusts, for kids) One flavor was peanut butter and honey, and I checked the ingredients. The "honey" was actually mostly corn syrup, with honey flavoring. When I asked them why there was corn syrup in it at all, they told me that it made the honey more "spreadable" when they were making the product. (You know, because honey is so difficult to spread in its pure form!) I am allergic to corn syrup, and so I passed on that free sample... Carla in Sac

Yes I was asking about the finish on the faucet. Thank you. I had tried just wiping off the sink with vinegar but it wasn't doing much. Letting it soak for awhile and then a little scrubbing did the trick. I used your paper towel suggestion Sheilajoyce. That was very helpful since there is a little groove around the top edge that's hard to clean. After I was done and has it all dried off, I rubbed some veggie oil around the faucet area where the deposits were the worst hoping that will make it easier to keep dry and clean. It looks like new! Thanks so much for your help everyone.

I used vinegar in the rinse in my old Top Loader. I used about 1/4 to 1/2 cup. I continue to use it in my FL - I fill the FL softener dispenser, which is probably a couple of tablespoons. I have a septic system and have not noticed any problems. Like grainlady, I've never had a problem with vinegar smell on the clothes, certainly not after they have dried. If you should have a problem with a vinegar smell, cut back on the amount you are using. I would not worry about vinegar harming your septic tank. Distilled white vinegar is a very mild acid (5%) -- you can eat it, after all. Your goal is to make the rinse water slightly acid, which helps to neutralize any lingering detergent, so the clothes rinse cleaner. It made a difference in the old TL; it makes a difference in the FL. Commercial laundries use an acid in the rinse for the same reason, but I assume that commercial laundries probably uses something stronger than food-grade vinegar. As long as you aren't putting huge amounts of vinegar into your septic system all at once (huge = 55 gallon drum), I doubt you have anything to worry about. CMC

I've had the same thing happen. With red wine vinegar too. I still use it, but don't "shake" up the bottle releasing that crud.

Oh thanks, I needed that mental image...I guess from now on I'm going to be eyeballing my jugs of vinegar suspiciously when I draw some off for use. :D

They appear to grow in unpasteurized vinegar.

How many of us have unpasteurized vinegar?

Gag me!

I just pitched a half full bottle of raspberry red wine vinegar with all that carp in the bottom....not a cheap bottle either...grrrrrrrr.

Once I see the carp it's over between me and said bottle of vinegar. Need to buy smaller bottles, but they are hard to find.

kframe, I make my own red wine vinegar...as I don't even exactly understand the pasteurization process, I'm pretty sure mine isn't.

gina, it might just be protein, but so would millipedes or garden slugs be. :P

Oh well. Anybody besides me read some day long ago about how many fly parts per million are allowed by law in our ketchup?

What I don't understand is why someone would want to raise these creatures. The website you linked says how to raise them, but doesn't say why on earth one would want to!

I 've been laughing myself silly over this thread; rightfully grossed-out and curious at the same time.

I have a bottle of something in the cellar cold-closet. I was originally the left-overs of red wine. I bought a mother and was going to start vinegar. (The sulfites in wine won't allow proper fermentation). Now it is a scary bottle, yet I am compelled to keep it. Anybody raising fancy fish?
