Difference between nylon 6,6 and nylon 6 carpet

Ok, thanks to the help I have received here, I have decided against using polyester carpet. I have been pricing short cut nylon frieze, and have come across a couple of pretty good deals at a local carpet store. One is Anso nylon and the other is a Shaw nylon but I forget the name. Both are nylon 6. What is the main difference between 6 and 6,6 nylon? We are stretching our budget to get the nylon instead of polyester, so I am leaning towards going with the nylon 6 because it is less expensive than the 6,6. My main concern is with it fading. The salesman I worked with told me that is will fade, but that there is really no way to predict how quickly. Are we talking 1 year or 5 yrs or 10 or what? The choice for us really is between nylon 6 and polyester...I know polyester won't fade, though, but still, I think nylon is the way to go, right?

its been awhile since I was a cpt rep but pretty much nylon is nylon. Anso is a brand name of nylon as is Stainmaster. I recall that when I sold in Hawaii certain nylons wouldn't be sold as they faded so rapidly. Fiber is always a trade offs of benefits. Polys are dyed all the way thru nylons arent which is why polys won't fade but nylon will. Have you looked at any Mohawk Smartstrand? Absolutely won't fade and extremely durable. Search on this forum for Smartstrand and you can read the threads. If fading is a big concern then yes you will be dissapointed with nylon.

I find there is very little fading with Nylons of today. I have had one complaint in 16 years of nylon fade. that house was full of glass to the south and none of it was Low e. It is really a non issue of today. The 6.0 Nylon will be fine and yes much better than polyester.

One last rebuttal. I stand behind my statements on dreamin. Dreamin is approx 30 ounce faceweight with a fifteen year texture retention warranty. Tex retention is the only warranty that gives you a fighting chance against a carpet that uglies out. Should you place a triple touch cushion under it (you are actually buying warranty in my opinion)...and you have a tip blossom, water pool, twist loss, or any other fiber related problem, Shaw will cover it. Now nothing is 30 years or really 15 for that matter, but this carpet performs extremely well and doesent carry a monster price tag. Fusion 500 and Dreamin are two of the better valued upper entry level priced products that Shaw sells. We have stocked Dreamin since its conception (probably 3 years ago) and have not had one complaint. I will stack Dreamin up against a 20 buck a yard wholesale cost clear touch any day of the week. R2x stain protection is another nice benefit. Yep great for a rental, resale, or a family room in the basement and a whole helluva lot of other rooms for a budget conscious family. Shaw doesent buck the warranties when dealer applied pressure is present when triple touch is under the carpet. Just a little tidbit of info.

Nylon vs polyester in a frieze is especially easy. run from the poly if you want performance. There is no comparison in texture retention. Nylon will outperform. may not have the big blown feel, but is all carpet. Good Luck.

Can't really comment on the Shaw, but I can comment on our carpet buying experience when it comes to this style of carpet. Our carpet guy tried to steer us toward the Shaw carpets that compete w/ Smartstrand when DH balked at the SS price (granted, DH hadn't done any research on the carpets or even touched the SS). After feeling the Shaw sample and comparing to the SS, I said absolutely not. Like you we had issues w/ the carpet we put in the last house not being comfortable and stains would reappear a couple days after a steam cleaning & I definitely did not want a repeat on either of those fronts. We went w/ Smartstand and have been very happy with it's performance so far. Super soft luxurious feeling & stains come right out with just a little plain tap water and a clean cloth (even blood splotches from when DS2 cut his foot and tracked quarter sized blood splotches into his bedroom, across the room to his bathroom and back across the beautiful white SS carpet)--AMAZING!! Can you go outside your builder's carpet guy? If you're looking for a better price on SS, try Lowe's. Their price is so low that the local dealers can't touch it--it may even come in less than the Shaw carpets you're looking at. Each dealer's SS has different names assigned to the different weights so you'll need to have the specs to compare apples to apples (i.e. the dealer's SS Intelligent Style is the same as Lowe's SS Lucky Star.) Remember too, that when you deal with the builder's preferred vendors, they like to talk about how you get a builders discount/builders pricing. What they really mean is that the builder will be getting a kickback/referral fee from the vendor for giving him the business. Additionally, the builder may pad the charges from the vendor. All in all, you may come out much better by going through the local Lowe's. Hope this helps!

Carpet needs padding to support it. Carpet consists of fiber woven into a backing Without a great pad beneath, the backing will break. If the backing breaks, the aging process of the carpet accelerates. The carpet gets wavy and the fibers look worn. Check with the manufacturer of your carpet-as some carpet warranties outline specific requirements for the padding. A question to ask is it frothed urethane? Don't confuse frothed foam with standard foam pad . Not only are they totally different-but they're actually at opposite ends of the padding spectrum. The different is prime foam/standard foam has gas mixed in with the foam when it is manufactured. Frothed foam does not. This makes frothed foam extremely durable. It is also one of the few pads that last through two carpet installations. In other words you won't need to replace the pad when you purchase new carpet down the road. So what's the trade off? You are right the price tag!!!! Rebond is the sweet spot for most homeowners. It's one of the cheapest pads, but durable enough to hold up for many years.

Thank you. One more question...what is the difference between 6 and 6,6 nylon? Is it the way it is dyed? I am assuming 6,6 is solution dyed and 6 is not? But really I have no idea. Thanks again for the help!

Invista and Solutia have done a super job of marketing to convince you that theirs' is best. Also, their yarn is a type 6.6 nylon and is marketed as being "better" than type 6 nylon. However, recent studies by leading chemical engineers suggest that the differences between the two types have little to do with a carpet's overall performance, and further suggest that carpet construction is more important than fiber. The reason the consumer has to pay about $1.00/sq.yd. more for Stainmaster or Wear Dated than unbranded nylon fiber is that Invista and Mohawk spend millions of advertising dollars to convince you their fiber is better. This cost is passed on to the mill, and then to the dealer, and then to you. Invista did help the consumer by breaking their fiber quality into groups.

Nylon is the absolute stronest fiber for carpet and it has to state that it is nylon otherwise it plainly is not and not as strong. There is not enough of a difference between nylon 6 & 66 to justify a decision as such with carpet. As far as fading, solution dyed nylon is best for not fading. The color is locked in, so if you have a solution dyed nylon fiber carpet you are pretty much at the best you can get. Shaw’s nylon is called Anso and their carpeting is stain treated with a stain treatment called R2X and is a very tough stain treatment that does not come off easily at all.
