What do you eat when no one is looking?

What are you embarrassed to admit you eat? Like I always eat the little piece of pork (fat) in a can of baked beans, about once a year I eat a can of spaghettios with the hot dogs in them, and although I don't go out and buy them, if someone brings me a box of those cheap Christmas cookies in the different colors and sprinkles, I will eat the whole box. I will eat them one after the other until they are gone. I know the people on this forum are wonderful cooks, but I'm wondering, what is your guilty pleasure, what do you eat when no one is looking? :)

OMG, I laughed until I cried reading this post. My sneaky pete thing is simple. I wrap a piece of bologna around a Claussen pickle half and munch away. Sometimes I wrap the bologna around a string cheese. And sometimes when I'm feeling generous I have a pickle or string cheese as the accompaniment.

    I like this thread :-)

Deep fried broccoli. Now, in my mind, I should get points for this. After all, I could have deep fried a potato or a Twinkie, but instead I chose a green vegetable. Other people don't seem to see it that way. . .

    When do you eat them?

To each his own! It is a matter of preference and fig variety. My Celeste figs are sweet as soon as they first turn brown, but my Magnolia figs are bland and tasteless until full ripe. Even the Celeste figs are much sweeter when they are dead ripe, but they are sweet and edible much sooner than the Magnolia. If your fig friend is happy with her unripe figs, let her eat them early. I would prefer to wait. There is always a trade-off. If I wait until my Magnolia figs are ripe, the birds always get them before the next day, so I tend to pick them at an unripe stage and let them ripen "on the shelf" for a day or so. Not as good, but at least I get them instead of the birds!

Hah, I've got this one down pat! When you eat some form of pasta for three or four meals a day for a solid week or more!! I do this often. I need to eat three or four or more small meals a day and sometimes the only meal that's not pasta is supper with Christy, but then...sometimes she eats something else and I eat pasta for supper too. Bwahahaha... I even freeze quite a bit of the sauce so that I can have fresh sauce after I run out of the first pound of pasta. Sometimes I have my pasta with just butter, or butter and sour cream or with cottage cheese and of course there are periogies with sour cream and gnocchi or ravioli with sour cream. After about a week or ten days I make my next big pot of chili... and eat that with...rice...or bread...or tortilla's or... some darn carb...potatoes.... My name is Coconut and I am a carb lover. [psst...when the little crabs were mentioned and then Annie said didn't eat enough of them..... gagggg..... I too figured he meant the body crabs...shudder...gaggg..] Now if I lived back in New Orleans and could get crabs all the time............I'd still eat pasta two or three times and day and crabs once or twice...lol. Btw, my A1C is excellent as is my cholesterol and such. I think it's all the sauce. My weight, not so much, but I'm a nice healthy obese person. Smiles.

Do You Find When You Go Out To Eat...........?

    Q

    Comments (16)
DH and I always order the same pizza from our favorite place: Medium thin crust S.O.S. (sausage, onion, spinach). If I'm eating out I usually order something I'm not going to fuss over making at home. I like my own hamburgers, steaks, chops, chicken, etc. I'm a slow eater, and I can't eat much all at once, so those lunches of a cup of soup or small salad and half a sandwich (maybe egg or tuna salad on whole wheat) are *plenty* for me. I never have room for the 'sides' of slaw or fries or chips.

When you look at this kitchen...what backsplash do you see?

    Q

    Comments (79)
I personally like the paint around the windows and I would not care for tile all the way around ... think it would be too busy and I have a beautiful backyard to look at and would prefer that to be the focal point. This backsplash certainly makes a statement in my mind

The ONLY thing that does embarrass me and I would not want anyone- other than you, of course!- to know that I love, is the fat on meat.
When I buy a rotisserie chicken, I immediately eat the wings, once home.
When I grill steak, boneless skinless chicken breasts or even London broil, I love the fatty, crisp edges.
    That's it, really.

I only allow myself this guilty pleasure every year or so because it must have a bazillion calories. I grew up eating it at my grandparents' home -- the Corliss grandparents, famous for Grandfather's buttermilk pancakes I posted a couple of weeks ago. My dad (their eldest) still loves this dessert, and I often make it for his birthday.

    Canned Caramel

1 can of Eagle brand condensed milk (or any other brand).

Place unopened can in large pot, cover with water, and boil gently for 4-6 hours. Keep a close eye on the pot, adding water when necessary to keep can covered. If you cook it for 4 hours, you'll get a creamy caramel colored pudding, similar to the Dulce de Leche you purchase in Buenos Aires supermarkets (where it's sold in cottage cheese style containers). If you cook it 6 hours, the sugar will begin to crystallize so you'll get a bit of crystallized sugar in each bite. In my opinion, you can't go wrong either way.

Chill in fridge for several hours. Open can, and either serve in small dishes (it's rich, so just a few spoon fulls will satisfy) or eat out of the can, if you're the only one indulging.

    I love this dessert!

OMG - I am crying I am laughing so hard too!!!!!! THis is an AWESOME thread and I would love it if it could be immortalized in the FAQ! There are several that have been named (by more than 1 person) that would never have occurred to me, but what do I know? My guilty pleasures are just as bizarre (if not more so) than everything listed.

My personal guilty pleasure list -

Kraft Mac & Cheese (not even the delux kind, the cheap old fashioned kind LOL)

    Liverwurst/onion/mayo on white squishy bread

    Hostess Cherry Pies

Crunchy Cheetos - not caramel covered. The caramel ones belong to a whole different food group: the make-once-a-year-for-a-holiday list (where the Green Bean Casserole resides) not the eat furtively over the sink with hand soap nearby so no one ever knows.

Oh - and I now have a craving for Spaghetti-O's and a Big Mac and a bunch of other stuff I haven;t had in years and now really want.

The only one that did raise an eyebrow for me is the Circus Peanuts..... Who knew!!!!!

You know that little red paper thing on beef bologna slices? You peel it off before eating? Well sometimes, if you're lucky, some bologna will stick to that red paper and you get to use your teeth to peel it off and eat it. The bologna, not the paper. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

THEN, I fold the bologna and I bite out circles to make eyes and a nose and a mouth.

lol, shaun, I'm with you on the red peel with balogna sticking to it. Been there, done that!

ROFLOL! Who knew that a little circle of meat casing could give us such joy!

OMG I knew some of us were kin! Yes Tamara, I too eat brown sugar lumps, and the darker the sugar the more delicious they are! And if I'm out to dinner and they serve naturally dark sugar lumps with the coffee, I'll sneak a few of those too!

I love chocolate and peppermint, so York patties are always good, and yes, like Bumblebeez I eat the wings standing at the kitchen counter after buying a quickie chickie!
Back when I could eat a tuna sandwich I always needed it on white toast with potato chips so I could make a "crunch sandwich"! LOL

This one hasn't made the list yet, and I don't think anyone does it but me.

The cheap tubes of rolls (like pillsbury) the ones your supposed to bake, i eat raw out of the tube.

    Frozen hostess cupcakes

One thing I do that I try not to do in front of others is paint on bluecheese on my chicken wings.

I can buy a whole tube of pre-made cookie dough with no intentions of making any cookies.

I eat Stove-top right from the can (the pre-mixed stuff).

One of my favorites is Hamburger Helper lasagna.

    My favorite, alone:
"Whole peanuts with mayonnaise on whole wheat bread!

This is so twisted,, I love it! Some of these concoctions bring back a lot of memories. Beverly, your potted meat made me think about my love of liverwurst on soft white bread. Again, I'm the only one who can eat this. I also used to like head cheese on white bread, nothing else but a couple of slices on plain bread. It's hard to find anymore. What there is doesn't have the colorful spices in it and it costs more than steak when it's found. It seems there's a better market for gizzards in the east than there is out here. But, I can still find them in some markets and can be fixed in no time.

Glenda, whole peanut sandwich? That is creative!!!!!

bumblebeez, when I bake a ham, my husband and I cut off all the squares of sweet, basted, caramelized fat and munch them down because they're never as good as they are that first night. I would make ham more often if it weren't for this, but we can't help ourselves.

Judi, I will NOT think about PB and melted marshmallows on toast. I will not. I WILL not. I WILL NOT.

    Jeepers though, that sounds good.

Jack in the Box tacos. Oh wow. I worked at a Jack in the Box in High School when they first introduced them. At the time, it was a subsidiary company of Ralston-Purina. The tacos were delivered already stuffed with "meat" and frozen, the whole thing being dumped in the deep fryer and then peeled open to add lettuce, sauce, cheese and tomatoes. It was a little unnerving that the "meat" looked terribly like canned cat food, considering the red and white checkerboard on the side of the delivery trucks. They were pretty tasty, though.

My kids reminded me of another disgusting thing I do when I think no one is looking, when making up a batch of cookies, I always, ALWAYS eat a bite of the creamed butter and sugar or crisco and sugar. It's greasy and nasty and coats my mouth with lardness and I do it every time. I must.

Gosh Jonsgirl, I thought that was part of the directions for making cookies: "Cream the butter with the sugar. Eat a spoonful. " I always do that.

Last night I made a run to the grocery store while I was starving, always a mistake since I buy junk food. I ate a quarter of a package of Keebler Fudge Sticks while unpacking the groceries, followed by hummus with Triscuits. Blech, but it hit the spot and I was starved.

LOL at Glenda al - there's been so much talk of circus peanuts that when I first read your post I thought you meant a CIRCUS peanut sandwich with mayonnaise on whole wheat!

This thread is such a good laugh!

My dogs know several sounds from a mile away : the crinkle of the rotisserie chicken package top and the click of grill tongs. Although the smell coming from the grocery bag of the chicken drives them wild too.

A chemical sandwich: braunschweiger on white bread; just a few nitrates and bleach. Mmm. And Peeps. Sorry John, I still love you, but I also love peeps. Soft or crunchy, purple, pink, yellow or green, I eat them all!

    This is all so funny!

Rotisserie chicken wings here too - right away when I get home

Cheeze-its with a radish half in the same bite

I loved Jack In The Box Tacos and would drive many miles for some (a few, maybe more than a few) to bring some home for dinner. Broke my heart when I moved away and the last time I drove up in that area, they were gone :(

Haven't bought in years, but I bet I would still eat an entire package of cheap, frozen baked/stuffed clams. Or Howard Johnson chicken croquettes.

A big bowl of mashed potatoes with butter and salt, topped with lots of apple sauce. :o)

These are so funny...and it is scary how many I share with you all...........more than one!

My secret craving once in a while is vienna sausages and potted meat. I think because mom fixed us sandwiches when we were kids at home....Normally I try to eat only real food not "food products", but when I crave these I just grab the cans and don't look at the label.

I eat them on home-made ww bread so maybe that helps a little.

    glenda

Somewhat dried out peeps! I cut the package open and let them sit for a day or two and then watch out! I cannot stop until they are gone. Also spagheti O's sandwiches. Just the stuff rolled up on white bread. A thing I did as a kid.
    Fun thread.

I would just like to say that I'm oh so very happy I'm not the only crazy loony who eats Jack in the Box tacos. Thank you, those of you who also eat them, mystery meat and all, for validating my experience!

My Jack In The Box tacos never really looked that good, Lowspark, LOL, but they tasted superb! (Maybe they started out looking like that but they ended up looking like somebody sat on them when I opened them up, LOLOL, what a great memory - I can taste them right now!)

Yeah, what's up with that pix? :)

My Jack In The Box tacos never had lettuce, tomato, & Velvetta cheese! They just had a goopy orange-greasy mystery meat filling & then were smashed like Woodie said. I think the smashing part is required to be genuine?

I would always eat the crunchy shell part off the top just to get rid of it...then, get down to business & enjoy eating the soft bottom part of the taco while it dripped grease down my arms. :( Yum!

    /tricia

The ONLY fast food product I have ever thrown away was the Jack-in-a-Box taco. It was exactly as Tricia described.
Someone sat on it (for a long time) and it had no lettuce, tomato or cheese.
I was expecting a nice Taco Bell crispy taco at half the price....lesson learned.
I was lured by the huge signs on the side of the building: Tacos! 2 for $1.00!

ROTFLMAO! Yeah, it's called advertising. Name me one fast food product that actually looks like its picture. Too funny!

They do put cheese in them, and shredded lettuce. At least the ones I've had. I don't think that's tomato in the picture, I think it's hot sauce. They always throw some in my bag but I never use it. I like them just as they are, unadulterated. I like the crispy part because it compliments the mushy mystery meat part well. And yes, they are smashed flat. It's part of the charm!

There was no crispy part in the ones I had. The shells had absorbed all the grease and were chewy.

Thanks for all the laughs and thoughts about guilty pleasures.I have to admit that I bought a box of Turtles to give to a friend as a thank you for helping me, but the darn box magically opened and I just ate a handfull. Shame on me:)

This post has become so long and entertaining I showed it to my husband the other evening. After reading through it he wondered what people so interested in food would wish for as a last meal? If you had just ONE meal left what would it be? I still don't have an answer for him. That's too hard!

Bacon mac and cheese, boneless buffalo wings, fresh squeezed lemonade (if I were about to get the chair, I might want some vodka in it), cheese grits with butter, sushi, and black bottoms. That may sound like a lot of food, but if it were my last meal, I'd make it fit in my stomach :-D

Kate, that's a great topic, you should post it on a separate thread!

I was thinking the same thing, that deserves a whole new thread, and I've been thinking about it all day and still don't know what I'd want for my last meal...

I've been to Gizzard City bar a couple times. Not remembering the town but it was south of Lansing a ways as I recall... could probably drive there if I hit the road looking. There was the most wonderful junk store (antiques) next door when I was doing ebay about 10 years ago. Drive down for a carload of junk, eat gizzards, and then go post junk on ebay (got $30 for a set of S&P shakers!). Ahh the good ol' days uploading pictures with a 28.8 modem.

Thought I posted to this thread once... probably deleted for being gross.

Boiling unwanted cow parts (hearts & tounges) to pickle today. Also found a pig tounge and a couple deer tounges in the freezer to make for variety! Yeah... I make gizzards seem like normal food... we pickle those when a buddy has his flock butchered and we get 10 lbs of fresh gizzards for free.

Sometimes when the lights are dim and nobody can see I slip a Jeno's frozen pizza in my shopping cart. After it is baked I fold it in half and eat it with the grease running out the corner. Tastes better then any other frozen pizza to me. Price never goes up but I notice they keep shrinking and have ever cheaper cheese/meat products topping them.

    : )

My brother and I used to eat those pizzas when he was babysitting me, such a treat! I still sneak one now and then. :)

Butter A piece of hot fresh bread with a half a stick of butter dripping from it.

And sour, sour, sour tonic water with nothing else in it.

(I could almost eat butter by the stick.

    bunnyman,

You did post. I remember reading it, and though I don't remember what it was, I do recall it was "different." Certainly not horrible enough to merit being removed. Jeesh.

    Valerie

    Country Crock margarine.
If I use it for something, I just HAVE to eat a little pat of it, all by itself.

And Brummel & Brown spread. Could eat it with a spoon.
But I use pretzel sticks as an excuse. Scoop it up with them.

Just about all baked goods are much better before they are baked. I used to drive my Mother nuts, any time she was baking something, anything, I would beg for some extra dough to be left in the bowl. "Licking" the bowl was my job! :>)
    And I still do it.

Growing up, chicken gizzards, cow tongue and heart were real treats, nothing odd or unusual about them at all.
I would still love them if I could get them. They aren't available here.
Can (and do) get gizzards, though. Turkey gizzards are an even better treat!

Michael/Lyra, don't miss the Gizzard Fest, it's June 11-12-13 in Potterville, which is where Gizzard City is.

They're going to have lawn mower races, belly dancers, pony rides, a beer tent. Oh, and gizzards, of course.

I was a little taken aback by the belly dancers but there must be a tie in somewhere with that, LOL.

Beverly, my dad and I used to eat raw potatoes all the time! We'd sit on the porch with the salt shaker and he'd slice thin slices with his pocket knife. (It's a wonder we didn't poison ourselves given taht pocket knife was used for anything and everything.)

I've been known to eat my peanut butter, mustard and saltine cracker sandwiches in private. Not because I'm embarrassed about them, but because DH finds it too weird. I ate a lot of those years ago. These days, once a year is plenty.

On the note of eating raw potatoes my Mom would cut a thick slice whenever she was making mashed potatoes, shake on some salt and pepper and that was a 'treat' for us. We loved it. Probably part of why I'm so keen on potatoes yet today.

    I like:
-- grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches -- cooked just like grilled cheese, but with PB&J in the middle.
-- puffy cheese curls, but they have to be stale/chewy
-- frozen 3Musketeers bars, sometimes with the chocolate cut off before freezing
-- Cadbury Creme Eggs, both in season and from the freezer
-- Nestle chocolate chips, preferably by the handful

I have quite a few things:

Crispy Chicken Skin- I think my family believes I buy skinless chickens and roast them, by the time it hits the table there is no skin left.

Pretzles dipped in soft cream cheese

Toasted Peanut Butter and Honey sandwiches. I put peanut butter and honey between 2 slices of bread then butter the other sides and throw it in a skillet to toast the bread and melt the peanut butter. OMG so good.

    Ramen noodles- I'm guilty

Buckeyes- I make a big batch then hide some in the veggie crisper to get cold and grab one when no one is looking.

Sue Bee canned Chicken and dumplings- I can only get them when I go down home so I will buy a few cans while I am there and eat them all by myself.

Ham sandwiches with horseradish mayo and melted swiss cheese.

And there's nothing much better than a piece of cheddar cheese between saltine crackers in one hand and a Coca Cola in the other hand. No substitutes for the Coke either.
