I think I remember seeing something about the Original Mattress Company discussed there. The people on the forum have a wealth of information. I purchased a McRoskey about a year and a half ago. I'm a little late on the draw, but I actually came to this website seeking opinions about the Original Mattress Factory.

I've been looking at Stearns and Foster, but haven't been able to swallow completely that $1800, on sale, is an appropriate price to pay for a mattress set. So, I started looking around and came across the site for the Original Mattress Factory. Their site showed that the orthopedic mattress had nearly the same specifications as the S&F (12 3/4 gauge, 6 turn, offset coil), but was MUCH less expensive. Curious about their customer service, I dropped an email asking some silly question about whether their coils were "double tempered". To my surprise, Gordon, the owner of the Orlando factory, called me the very next day.

He was very open to questions and confirmed what I had already suspected: that he and his partner had spent years working for Sealy/S&F before deciding that they could make just as good a mattress at half the cost.

They offer 12 year warranties and an unheard of one-year comfort guarantee. You can even go to their factory and watch them make their mattresses.

Before I hung up, I confessed to Gordon that my remaining apprehension was less due to the fact that they are located two hours away, than it was that their prices seemed too good to be true.

I'm in marketing, and I understand how very much the mattress companies spend, and less marketing does allow for lower prices..but dang! Their mattress is in the $650 range, one third of the S&F while on sale.

I'm thinking of driving down next week to see the place for myself, and would love any additional information that you could provide about your new mattress.

I have an Original Mattress Factory bed - King size 2nd to the top of the line. I would not buy from them again - the body imprints are very bad (2+ inches) & if I wanted to try to warranty the mattress, I'd have to find a way to take the bed (KING SIZE) to the store which is over 4 hours away. (I moved since I purchased the bed.) Then I have no guarantee they would actually warranty the mattress. The body imprints are more like a huge hump in the middle - I followed all the rules about flipping the mattress, it is now about 5 years old, however the "hump" has been there for a couple of years - it can be seen through the fluffiest down comfortable!! I might buy a small bed for a guest room - but not a large bed that gets used everyday. I did not try to warranty the mattress sooner because I did not know it was possible (dumb???) - I found the paperwork on the mattress after we moved & made a phone call to the company - they did call me back, but it was not really practical for me to pursue warranty.

DH and I have had our Original Mattress- King size for 8 years and it's wonderful - just like new and I heartily recommend it. Our adult DDs also have these mattresses and again they are great. All of ours are on platform beds and it was a relief to find someone who would sell us the mattress without the boxsprings. Next time we need a new mattress, we're going back to OMF - I refuse to pay outrageous prices for advertising for those 'S' ones.

DH and I hated mattresses with pillow tops - ours does not have one. From what I've read, posters with various makes of mattresses with pillow tops have found overtime they become lumpy and wrinkly - I wonder if that is what Beshel has?

skypathway - Yes, my king size is a double pillow top original mattress factory bed. I wonder if you have had better luck because you are on a platform bed instead of a boxspring?? Sometimes I wonder if it's the split box spring that is helping to cause the hump in the middle? Next mattress I get will be latex - just saving up! New houses need so much stuff - the mattress will have to wait, sigh...

We have bought several "Original" mattresses but not one for our own bed yet(only because we don't need it yet). The others are used on guest beds and one was a custom size. I like the idea you can buy just the mattress in any size. Their sales pitch is VERY low pressure and they have samples of the different competitors with "cut aways" showing the inferior quality.

That being said, I have one friend with the "pillow top" who has not been satisfied so maybe the other posters are right.

Beshel - it's probably the pillow top. I know so many people who bought pillow tops, from different manufacturers, not OMF, and all of them have found problems with the mattress top bunching, wrinkling and denting. They have all said they would never buy pillow top again. I doubt it's the split box spring unless they are broken in which case if you lifted the mattress I would expect it would be obvious. I am sorry you're unhappy with your choice, it is so hard to go mattress shopping - so many choices and so many chances to make the wrong decision. I know we thought about the latex and decided the heat factor would be horrible for us.

I took the plunge!

I drove to Orlando today and found that the OMF mattress was just as I suspected, and just as had been described. I have researched mattresses until I'm blue and today finally made a purchase...the OMF Orthopedic Extra Firm.

I wanted heavy gauge, extra firm, without all the fluff on top and they had it in spades; 12 3/4 gauge, 6 turn offset and tied coil. Heavy duty stuff. My friend laughed at me for driving so far for a mattress because "no amount of research will tell what's most confortable". True enough, but you also want the comfort to last and heavier gauge coil in a flippable mattress with a genuine box spring will last.

And...since I like tall beds and without all the extra fluff my stock bed was lower than I preferred, I paid an extra $40 and they are customizing my box spring to add about 4" to its height. The folks there are very easy to work with and if, within the first year, I find that the bed is uncomfortable (not defective), I can return it to them to be reworked. They will tear out the padding and repack it either softer or firmer depending upon my requirements, all for practically nothing additional in cost.

They don't deliver to Jax, so I'm driving down to pick it up in a couple of weeks. It will cost a hundred or so in van rental plus gas, but after paying around $650 for my bed, rather than the $1800 I had anticipated, I'm more than eager to pay it.

On the way home, I stopped at Macy's and looked at the S&F Greenway Court again...$1799 on sale.

I feel better about my purchase every time I think about it...

Original Mattress Factory should be able to make a custom size mattress for your bed. They make their own mattresses in their own factory direct outlet. I was thinking about getting one for an old bed frame of mine. I have heard some good things about them...
