February's bounty

I planted some lettuce, radish and parsley early last fall and TODAY I was able to harvest my little bounty!

Oh man!!! I am seriously jealous now!!

We love radishes roasted in butter and EVOO....so good! I bet your radishes are sweet too. I can almost taste them!

Hiya AZbookworm and all, I grow a lot of cacti and succulents in containers and they do great year round. When it comes to leafy/flowery things like petunias, lobelia and geraniums, I DO grow a lot of them (full sun) autumn, winter, spring and early summer when I can get a nice long 8 or 9 month season of blooms from them. When it gets blast furnace hot, I do cut back quite a bit and put many of the pots I use for flowery things in storage. I still grow some flowery things in summer like vincas, but not nearly as many pots as in autumn, winter and spring. Something like vincas in a pot in full sun will want water almost every day in mid-summer. If I head out of town for work or vacation, I run a temporary automatic irrigation line to those pots and then hope for the best. The main framework of my pots is cacti and succulents, with lots of leafy blooming things in the cool months, and then just a pot or two of leafy blooming things in summer. I got 2 Paper Pieced Blocks done (one was mostly done in January). I still have to add the HST which I will do once I get a few more block completed. I also still need to add the black sashing to make them 14". I also finished a few of the Stepping Stone blocks, as I needed to buy fabric for them (actually changed my mind on what I was going to use, as I found the perfect print). The steps are from a striped fabric that had a gradual change in colors that I fussy cut (156 2.5" squares) to what you see- each of these 14" blocks random and different. I need to get these completed in order to go forward with the colors for the remaining PP stars that are more involved. I am introducing a mint & green batik to the turquoise/dark purple/blue to brighten it up a bit. I am close to finishing the 12 stepping stone blocks since my color choices were limited on those. It looks like I have alot done - but I have an awful lot left !!! For the paper -I switched to Plotter and Drafting Vellum instead of laser / copy paper. It is much better, rips away easier and is semi transparent. It goes thru my laser, which is picky. Toolgranny suggested the old erasable typewriter paper - that would be perfect, but I would not recommend using it in a inkjet or laser printer/copier. It is no longer made as far as I know - I finally donated the stock I had because there is no market for it. In fact typewriters are only made by a few manufacturers (so hang on to yours if you have a working typewriter - ribbons are even harder to find). I've linked below to the Vellum. That looks great, Deborah! My lettuce out in the garden didn't survive so well. It's got a couple of frost bitten little leaves and that's it. I did find 3 carrots that were left in the ground last fall though.

I planted lettuce yesterday!

Pretty stuff! Enjoy your bounty!

I've got three little volunteer lettuces in the backyard. I'm seriously thinking about transplanting them to a pot - where my resident rabbit would be sure to find them - grrrr....

Sharon, I did consider that it might be a wee bit in your face :), but I did endure the insufferable wet days of the Pacific Northwest for 40 yrs. if that makes up for my post :)
I couldn't believe that it took almost 6 months for that lettuce to grow! I guess it didn't help that I caught our cat sunning herself in the pot just when the 1st greens appeared lol.
I'm still not used to the growing season here...summers are not good for sure though. Too danged hot.

Gee, that looks so good, DH and I should be making a little garden this year after my success with the tomatoes. Do raccoons eat veggies? If so I'd have to put them in pots, our resident raccoon makes a foray for grubs on a path though our side yard. Just where I'd plant the garden.

Wonderful bounty and it has me dreaming of summer. I have at least 3 months before I can plant.

Ellen, raccoons love tomato and corn. Ask me how I know.....

Ohhh I can't wait either. Rhiannon is already helpint plan the garden. If I can get away with it I want to add to my veggie and herb garden areas. I guess the 25 rhubarb plants take up too much room lol. Maybe we will have to see if we can get a pot of greens to grown inside now. Rhiannon planted apple seeds and can't wait until it grows her some apples, It is hard to explain that she would probably be as big as I am before she gets an apple.

Good for you deborah, however, I managed to scrape away the snow here in Maine and find enough parsley for creamed eggs last night. Yum.
