Air drafts from ventfree fireplace
Comments (2)I have this same issue - there feels like a breeze coming in all around the fireplace insert. What is on your outside wall? My builder put what they call a doghouse on the exterior. My last house I had a ventfree and all it had was some metal housing with a cage type thing around it - it was small. I also went outside to see if someone left something off or whatever, and there is a metal housing that is HOT and you can feel the heat very well out there. I only have the pilot light on but I think there is more heat going outside than in. Since you haven't recieved a response, where else can we look for some answers to this problem?...See Moreodor from natural vent gas coal fireplace
Comments (1)I recently installed a direct vent fireplace in my basement and am also experiencing a "burn off" odor. The flames start out mostly blue when cold but develope into a nice natural flame in 10-15 minutes. At first the odor was fairly strong but it has diminished. I have probably run the fireplace a total of 16-18 hours and it still produces some odor. I am hopeing that it will eventually go away completely. Any experienced input on this would be appreciated....See Morefireplace of a thousand drafts
Comments (0)It's a brick chimney, cinderblock base outside, stucco over something inside, twenty year old addition to a forty year old house. Cold air blows in everywhere - through the ashpit to the ashpit doors in the basement and the trap in the floor of the fireplace. Around the top of the frame of the embedded screen. Around where the damper frame attaches to the chimney - not much between the damper and the frame. The cold air isn't so much coming down the chimney as through the walls of the chimney itself although you can't see any gaps in the interior bricks. The house is not a tight house to start with but this is ridiculous. I got fire grade mortar and mortared everywhere I could feel a draft inside the fireplace. I got caulk and caulked the base of the chimney outside - you could see cracks there. And all I can say is it's better but still bad, so I've got the fireplace boarded up and taped for now, with a chunk of fiberglass batting shoved up the chimney, and another weighted down over the ashpit trap. Oh, and the ashpit trap is very rusty - but there isn't a water leak. Can I get a gas insert installed inside this fire place, that has its own firebox and so forth, so that this badly-built chimney is sealed off from the house, and so I can get some real heat from it? Any notion how much this would run? Because our furnace which is supposedly 90% plus efficient cannot possibly be, given how hot its chimney is...I think I'll by my next house in the wintertime....See MoreGas Backup in House from Gas Fireplace
Comments (2)hi Newman, I'm wondering if you may be getting some negative draft depending on the direction of the wind, the amount of roof pitch and how high the stack is. It can happen when starting a new fire that flu gasses can back up into a room until enough heat is built up to create a draft. There are chimney caps that are designed to help eliminate most, if not all, of that problem. Go to your home center and ask about it. I'm sure you will get some good information to solve your problem. Cheers, Jim...See MoreXanndra
