Easiest personal finance software

I use Bank of America for my online banking. I would like to learn an easy program that will categorize my expenses, keep track of my payments etc.

The choices B of A gives are

WEB Connect for Quicken 2009 and above

Managing Your Money - QIF file (2 digit)

Quicken - QIF file (4 digit)

Microsoft Excel Format

Printable Text Format

Since I'm a senior I'm interested in easy to learn and easy to use programs.

I am a big Quicken fan... been using it since the days of DOS!

I too use Quicken, but I buy the new update each year, not just download. I also back up about every 3-6 months, that way if I have to major repairs on the computer and loose Quicken, I have the disk and updates.

The bank has a legitimate concern. I don't know where you are building, but I am originally from a rural area where people moved into the area and built nicer than average houses and when it is time to sell they do not get their money out of the houses because the locals can't afford the those houses and other people who move into the rural area to enjoy rural life build their own homes so the houses get sold for a loss. Your credit is good now, but you could be in a car accident that destroys your credit rating over night (well in 3 years when the litigation is complete). The reality is that the risk of building a nicer than average home in a rural area has to be on you, not the bank. Since you have lots of cash, another option for you would be to increase your down payment so that the principal amount of the loan is less than the rural value of the house. This also happens to the locals too--those who can afford to build nicer than average houses do so knowing that they probably won't get their money out of them if they have to sell them in the short-term.

I fought with our builder over and over to get designs, until I simply taught myself some basic CAD and started sending him my ideas drafted directly. I started with trying to use the trial 30-day version of Autocad 13 from Autodesk, but it was way too complex. I ended up using two open-source alternatives that worked great: LibreCAD (http://www.librecad.org) for the 2D sketches (elevations, tile designs, profile of the kitchen island, etc.) and FreeCAD (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/free-cad/index.php?title=Main_Page) for the 3d modeling (finishing of the stairs, interior moulding, etc.). The former is very simple and intuitive to use if you have ever used a CAD. The 3D one is much more complex, but very powerful. Both are free.

I buy an update every three years as not much changes year to year.
I back up at LEAST twice a week. Nice that you only need to do it every 3-6 months! We have so much data... I would NEVER be able to reconstruct 5 months worth if something happens.

Which Quicken should I choose?

Not a clue as to what they are. I know, I've got some reading to do!!

Have any of you used something like Lynda.com to learn how to use Quicken?

I heard a speaker from Lynda.com. Sounds like good tutorials, not free however.

I don't know about either that you mention.
I buy my Quicken CD from Costco every three years.

I also know nothing of Lynda.com.
I thought it was easy enough to pick up with the tutorials that were on the CD and online.

What you're describing is file formats, not software programs, ginnyginny. If you want to use quicken, just buy the current version.

Lynda.com is very good for some software--I know their photoshop courses are highly regarded. They have some free trial videos for each course. I'm not sure their quicken course is up to date at all (it's for quicken 2009 and I have no idea what the current windows version is, since I have a mac), but if you go to the page linked below, the titles in blue are free to watch:
