vinyl tile over composite floor ... how? An $$ mess!!

I am replacing vinyl flooring (squares) over a partical board floor in an upstairs apt. kitchen. The original tiles were glued down .. some sticking but most loose. I guess this type of board flooring must meet building standards here!

What is the proper procedure for laying tile (either squares or sheet vinyl)over this base? Should there be something between the new tile & the flooring? I spent $300 on roll of vinyl & was told by Home Depot to glue it down over tar paper laid over the floor first but it became a mess ... the vinyl curled back up up & I lost $300 worth! Of course Home Depot gave all kinds of excuses why it did this despite their employee's advise!

Thanks for any ideas as to what happened & what I need to do to keep it from doing the same again.

Your first mistake, following any advise you got from Home Depot, and their clueless employees. If they knew how to do it, they surely would not be walking the aisles of Home Depot.

I have never heard of vinyl over tar paper! That is a failure right off the bat.

Take up the tiles. install an approved hardwood underlayment, like Multi-ply or Accu-ply, fastening it very well. Sand the edge joins and skim any divots and fastener pocks, along with any wide gaps. Let that sit for a day to dehydrate and then sand to a feather finish, and flat and smooth. Now prime the substrate and glue it down, using a 2x4 wrapped in carpet, as a squeegee, push the bubbles out.

Can smooth hardboard paneling or pegboard-type material be laid down under the tile first?

Yes, later another person also laid tile over tarpaper & the oils from the paper soaked up through the tile- which was a light color- & stained the tiles!

Hopefully we can salvage some of the vinyl sheeting to glue down under the kitchen & bath sinks for protection but most of that roll has to be tossed $$ ! :(

We should have come here for advise first rather than later!

OK then! :) My stupid floors are kind of uneven, though. Does that make a difference for the engineered hardwood? I should add that although we've never had any problems, the previous HO (original HO) did install a basement waterproofing system. It could certainly have been paranoia on her part, and I've never known our sump pump to run in almost three years, but I thought I'd put that out there. Many basements in my area DO have flooding issues, which is why I am somewhat paranoid. The rest of my house is hardwood though, and I vastly prefer that. I have always hated carpet. If you know of any good deals on EH, I'd be very interested in at least pricing it out. Is it something I can install myself?

I would peel up whatever vinyl sheets are there. Then scrape the rest with a scraper. Tile needs a good substrate or the tile could crack, your grout break up, or tiles become loose. I would use something like Schluter-DITRA (Mike Holmes uses it constantly) orange waffle. I used a blue mat I found in the tile section of HD. It's intended to quiet tile for upstairs flooring, but it had a sticky tar like backing that made it ideal for laying over old laminate that wouldn't come up. A while back I did quite a bit of research on these tiles because we're considering them for a couple of utility areas in our house. These tiles are not grouted with traditional grout. A special grout is used that has acrylic in it and it sets w/in just a few minutes. If I remember correctly, sealing it is not needed or recommended. Even though the end result likes like it, this is not a typical grouting installation. It's not ceramic, stone or porcelain, it's plastic so I too would just follow the manufacturers care instructions. It doesn't matter what application it's being used in, manufacturers understand the chemicals used to produce their products and if you follow their care instructions you're sure to get the best results. I sure hope you let us know how it turns out, I'd love to see a picture when it's done!

LVP (Luxury vinyl PLANK) is often SUPER THIN (like 1/8"). When vinyl is soft and flexible and THIN it often sinks INTO the groves and hollows sitting BELOW it. We call this telegraphing. It happens to ANYTHING that is THIN and FLEXIBLE. And I mean anything (carpet, lino, vinyl, paint, etc). This is the BIGGEST PROBLEM with laying LVP over tile. You are almost GUARANTEED to see the "tile" floor underneath. The SECOND biggest problem with LVP (or LVT...they are interchangeable terms for some of us) is it normally DOES NOT allow soft underlayment (the squishy stuff used under RIGID laminate or hardwood). And there is your SECOND issue. You must put the vinyl DIRECTLY over the old tile. As I see it, there are TWO OPTIONS for you: 1. Do this properly = jack out the tile, grind the subfloor, throw down Self Leveling Compound (SLC) to give your floor a lovely SMOOTH surface for the vinyl to sit "nicely". The above can cost $2/sf to remove the tile and another $2/sf to grind/level what is left. 2. You SINK the tiles in CEMENT and then lay the vinyl over top. To sink/float the tiles in cement, you need to GRIND the tiles (gives the tile surface a rough finish = something for the concrete to grab onto) and then you have to PRIME the tile (gives the concrete something to hold on to) and then you have to FLOAT the floor (coating of concrete) so that it is smooth. Then you wait for that to dry and then a final sanding/grinding to get rid of any small bumps/bubbles that are ALWAYS present. This should cost $2/sf for materials and $2-$3/sf for LABOUR (that's A LOT of grinding). Sigh....as you can see you are "damned if you do and damned if you don't". I ALWAYS vote to jack out the tiles for one SIMPLE reason: reduction of floor heights. If you ADD more concrete to your tiles, you will cause plenty of upset with your door/trim/appliance heights. That tiny 1/8" vinyl just added 1/2" (or more) of floor height. And that could be a deal breaker for all the doors, appliances and trim in the space. Not to mention the floor height changes where the vinyl meets anything else. There is NO SUCH THING as "cheap" subfloor preparation. You either pay the Piper on the way in, or you pay the Piper on the way out. And if you do it after he leaves, you could find the price is DOUBLE what it should have been - simply because the job had to be done twice: once the wrong way and then once the "right way".

You need to use a hardwood plywood underlayment. Trying to use luan or Masonite, is like throwing your money out the window again.

Luan has voids in the core, every now and then, step on that and it breaks through, also luan has oils in the wood, which cause adhesion problems and yellowing wicking after the install. Masonite explodes with water intrusion, and the moisture from the glue, is enough to make it happen.

Not that it matters, but you don't say whether or not that tar paper was first glued to the particle board. Flooring, especially natural linoleum, was typically installed over a layer of tar paper or another type of lining felt.

Not much will stick for very long over particle board.

glennsfc: No, I did not first glue the tarpaper to the particle board. I also tried a piece of the unused sheet vinyl with just some glue but that did not curl ... so it may not have been just the glue but maybe the vinyl/glue/tarpaper/particle board combination ...? The vinyl squares that were on the floor originally were just glued to the particle board by previous occupants. Some of the square tiles adhered good but most did not when I removed them.

So tarpaper had been used in the past? That must have been what the people that suggested it to me were thinking then ... what is 'natural' linoleum? Growing up I always remember my folks talking about 'linoleum'& 'oilcloth' ... terms I don't hear anymore nor do I know what they were really! Our old house had not asbestos but what was called 'asphalt' tiles on the floor.

My comment about stuff not sticking well to particle board is from direct observation.

Flooring manufacturers do not reecommend adhering flooring to particle board.

The advice from the person at HD was totally wrong.

Natural or genuine linoleum is made from cork flour, linseed oil, pigments and bonding agents and fillers to create a flooring material.

Oilcloth was essentially paint and pigments on canvas...predecessor to linoleum.

Asphalt tiles were actually asphalt asbestos contructions.
