How to arrange an automatic decrease in annual income

Suppose you've been in the habit of paying balance owed on credit card bills in full, monthly.

Suppose you take a friend to a restaurant (if non-deductible), go on vacation, or use it to pay for some other consumer item (i.e. something that you buy now and it's value is fully used up right away).

Being a bit short of money, you don't pay off the full amount owing, this month - and let that balance carry over the end of the year.

What you've done is spent more than you've earned, this year.

You'll have to pay it off next year. So that will leave you with less effective after-tax income, next year.

Not only that - you'll have to pay interest on the debt, until it's paid off.

Resulting in an additional reduction in your income, next year.

So - instead of enjoying a raise, next year - you've arranged an actual reduction in next year's effective income, income available to spend.

If you use it to buy a car, home or dining room table (capital goods that will provide a benefit to you over an increasing number of years, i.e., car lasts fewer years than home or table, loses value faster), the illustration doesn't apply, as you'll enjoy a benefit from your purchase in later years.

You might have been able to arrange a loan at more advantageous terms than using credit card, however.

A couple credit cards are offering a far better rate than my current construction loan, so I am paying between 0% and 1.9% for some appliances and my utility installation. All of which will be paid off as promptly as possible, 3 months maybe? Almost no way to get through this process without dipping into my outstanding (better than 90% of population) credit.

"Financing" something that will be in the septic tank in under 24 hrs. is a, "no brainer". Nor would I pay for a vacation that way, either... but memories of travel and vacations can be very worthwhile investments, too.

You've made a valid point, though, and when you put in those terms more people will understand the high price of immediate gratification.

First of all, a sincere thank you to each of you. The situation has been resolved. Norton contacted me this afternoon. The problem has to do with the Norton Firewall, and appears to have been fixed. If the problem recurs, I am to uninstall the Norton program and re-install it. Upon learning of my experience with i Yogi, the Norton representative explained that i Yogi has a redialer that sends your Norton call to them. i Yogi is a TOTAL SCAM. For those experiencing similar problenms in future, the Norton representative assures me that this toll-free number will get you to the real Norton Support people. 1(800)745-6061 When we go through the internet to get to Norton, even if we are entering through the Norton site, i Yogi can intercept the call. Again, my sincerest thanks for your time and attention to my problem. :O)

Available again this year (for 2010, not 2002, this time) ... limits about $25,000. single and $35,000. married. I was pleased with myself last year, in having arranged my affairs (via substantial charitable and some political contributions) ... ... to reduce my Federal tax load to zero. And the provincial liability was low, possibly nil, till I got down to the recently-initiated Health Levy and had to pay a few hundred for that. But I should not complain ... as I made substantial use of the healthcare services, for nil or minimal cost, during this past year. And I used to say that we should all be willing to pay a portion of the cost of running the country ... ... and then light fires under our legislators when we believed them to be running it/them improperly! Like I said - rich folks. With only one kind of income. They own quite a few Canadian stocks. Suppose the stocks pay them an income of $46,000. Suppose, now that the prices of bank shares have gone down quite a lot recently, they have about $660,000. invested that are paying 7%, to produce $46,200. last year. [Caution: I would not want to see someone with a substantial amount invested have chosen to invest it all in one company - way too risky!] When the single person calculates his/her tax load ... it'll be zero. If the "taxpayer" has a low-income spouse with some tax credits to transfer ... or makes some political contributions ... or donates some to a registered charity (and the credit is at a high rate when one contributes over $200. per year) ... or pays upwards of 5% of net income in eligible medical/dental expenses ... the tax-free amount goes even higher. You may have heard me say in some of my posts that I don't like earning interest - the number of underlying invested dollars can't grow. And the only income that it produces ... is produced now ... and it's taxed now ... at top rate. If you have stocks of Canadian companies that pay dividends and have other kinds of income, the tax-free amount reduces rather rapidly ... but you'll pay tax on the dividend portion at a much lower rate than that on most other kinds of income. If this doesn't explain it adequately, ask and I'll try again. Perhaps if you check the link and read carefully, you'll find it explained a little differently and in a way that'll be clear to you, over there. ole joyful

Oh dear, I am also one of those women who remarried after forty. Its not as uncommon as some people think. My best friend also remarried after she was forty. My husband is 6 years younger than I am, also a trend I guess. As for child support, I have absolutely no problems with the child support guidelines when it comes to the base amount. Where I have gotten upset in the past, is when daycare is added on, and the NCP ends up paying for most of it. If it were 50/50 on daycare I would have less problems. The way it works in most states, its a proportional share, which leaves no incentive for a CP to manage costs, since the ncp pays for most of it in many cases. Also, some vindictive people try to maximize costs, because they know it will be a hardship on their ex. In our situation, ex wife tried to claim that it cost 8k a year for after school care for a 12 year old...when care was available at the childs school for five dollars a day. My husband would have been required to pay for three quarters of that. Never mind that her costs for the last year were 3500. Anyway, she was mightly pissed off when the judge told her that to get daycare, the costs had to be reasonable , and necessary. 8 k for a 12 year old isnt reasonable, when its available for 800 per year. Now she is furious and somehow its my husbands fault. Go figure.

When I was a clergyperson, I felt that much of my task in interpreting a very familiar system of knowledge was to help people to look at it from somewhat different perspective(s) than they were used to.

For example, if a farmer on his tractor on Tuesday asked hiself,"What was Ed getting at in that sermon on Sunday?" and did some extra thinking on the issue, that suited me fine.

Similarly, as a financial planner I was in most cases talking to clients about familiar material. I tried to help them to look at various issues from a different perspective than the one(s) that were familiar.

I felt that if I left them thinking about things as they had before we started, I had not earned my compensation.

There was some self-interest involved, as well - if they felt that they were not receiving valuable material, different perspectives, increased skills or motivation, etc. from me - they wouldn't continue to pay me for consultations.

Hope that (as you live in the Northern Hemisphere) you're enjoying fall.
