She was wonderful. Everyone misses her.

An intrepid traveller, going with my archaeologist father to some mighty strange places and never complaining, not about fleas, lice, hospitals in third world countries, and bullets whizzing past her head.

Missed more than I ever imagined.

Our first Mother's Day without mom, needless to say, this has been a hard (emotional) week for me. Each milestone without her has been that way. I am lucky to have had my mom for the years I did, and I am thankful for that. Still so often I want to pick up the phone and tell her something.

Best words to describe my mom would be: always put others before herself. My greatest encourager, loudest cheerleader, she never thought there was anything her children couldn't accomplish. A great friend - she was loved by so many. That became even more apparent during her illness and after her death.

This is how my DD described me (written all over the envelope) in my current Mother's Day card. It's more than six words but it reminded me of this thread (and she is a hoot!).

She was a good mother and always put our needs first.
I loved her very much and she taught me so many things: how to cook (she was a great cook), take care of a home and it's inhabitants, to love animals.
She always wanted the best for me and helped me and my brothers in anyway she could. She was my biggest fan.

Jakabedy, were we separated at birth?

My mother had a lot of potential. She probably just shouldn't have had children. Or, maybe she just married the wrong man. I don't know. I was 21 when she died, so I have a lot of unanswered questions. I believe she had a pretty sad life. I often wonder, was she ever happy?

She was plagued by alcohol and fatigue and rage, but in spite of all that, my mother had many good, admirable qualities. She was:

Disciplined, hard-working, tenacious, smart, self-reliant and determined.

I vowed to be fair about my mother, because she loves us in the only way she knows how to love, so I will say that she's energetic, a great entertainer, showed me that women can do whatever they want, a great gardener, and loves home improvement projects.

My mother loves me very much over the last few years... every since she picked out a pricey assisted living place to land in that she nor I can afford. She thinks I am her only hope as no one else speaks to her much. I will say that one of my moms personalities is very sweet I'm just not always sure which one I'm dealing with.

Roselvr- I was re-reading these responses and noticed in your daughter's card to you: rattlesnake chopper?!

Godly, compassionate, friendly, goofy, supportive, fair.

Hmm, that was my DD. Yep. Once I had to chop a rattlesnake's head off. It was a big one - about 42" long and really fat. My dogs had it cornered in my front yard and it was rattling up a storm. I didn't want them to get bit (I lost a dog from a rattlesnake bite once) and I didn't want it on my property. I was single so I knew it was going to be up to me.

So, I called my mom (she knew how to kill a rattlesnake), who talked me through the whole "hold it's head down with a rake then chop off it's head with an ax" thing via the phone. I was a huge big baby about the ordeal. Once I actually did the dead I hopped around freaking out. (Aimee witnessed the entire adventure.) Hence, 'rattlesnake chopper' was added to my description.

Social, generous, stubborn, appreciative, well-dressed, gone.

Anyway, that's a great story about the rattlesnake! Clearly your DD thinks the world of you.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!

Caring, Loving, Always helpful, Intelligent, Resourceful, Energetic = CLAIRE

She'll be 80 this week! She's still healthy enough to deliver meals for Meals on Wheels. Plus she routinely visits about 6 friends living in nursing homes. She serves on her church council. She is very active on the social ministry committee. She just recently stopped driving cancer patients, for Road to Recovery, when the woman she drove weekly for 6 years passed away.

Whenever she does a good deed, which is almost daily, she finds something that she feels is her reward - maybe she unexpectedly runs into one of us kids out somewhere (she LOVES when that happens), or she gets a $1 rebate check, or she'll hear from one of the grandkids, any crazy thing like that & she considers it a cosmic thank-you. It's such a wonderful way to look at life.

She has often said her proudest accomplishment is that her 6 children (and now the 8 grandkids) all really like each other & get along so well.

We are incredibly lucky to have her.

Gone but not forgotten, missed everyday.

My mother is 82 and was widowed at 65 but she still golfs, hikes, travels, gardens, volunteers at her local library, and is involved in a book club, bridge, University Womens Club, choir, elder courses and drives all her friends, who can no longer drive, everywhere.
She is energetic, inspirational, loving. We are very different and so boy, can we ever argue. But that's ok because she is still here.

Gone too soon. Missed very much.
