We live in a very country area. My son is in kindergarten....the little ones LOVE projects like this! Our school district would get "hung up" (for lack of better wording) on making sure it was "fair" to all students... if you offer to one...then you'd have to offer to others. Our district is very large. There just wouldn't be any way to put an ad on the schools webpage or newsletter. One thing that you may be able to do though...since you've done this every year, Have it be an ongoing project...Mrs. "Cozy's" Kindergarten Garden report. Give handouts to the students with fun little reports from the kids. On the first report (at the beginning of this season) you could include info to the parent on how to "register" their child's garden. (almost like a form to fill out). child's name, name of the garden, what they would like to grow, would they grow in pots or ground?, need a tiller to get started? need more info to get started? grow by seeds or transplants? Have them either include their phone number to contact them back or include YOUR phone number to get in touch with them for tilling. I realize that this is quite in depth but if the form was simple enough for the parents to check off the boxes, you would know a bit more about the home situation of each child. First contact would be made. That's a wonderful idea! I would hope that your school is easy to work with and you have success in trying to help. Maybe it would be just as easy to just ask the kids...who has a yard? Who has a garden? Would you like to have a garden? Oh, Faye, I would have missed your weiner dog if it had not come in email....what can I say! I'm printing out that picture for my DH's amusement. I already fell off my chair! How adorable. Meanwhile this winter, our younger, Dolly, learned to dig and to catch moles. She has TWO MOLES to her credit just this week. If it is raining, she looks out the back door, and you can SEE her disdain, "You expect me to go out in THIS?" So DH ordered an artificial turf layered poopy pad....which has "mixed reviews" at our house.....sigh....come on spring. Today they are both outdoors, chasing squirrels, digging holes, telling Papa where to put things. They're girls.

I rarely read memoirs. For the most part they do not interest me. I read the Keith Richards one for my book club and it was actually interesting. Next month we are reading the Shirley Jones one, which I do not expect to like as much. But I do have in my possession a handwritten memoir of someone who was not related to me. My grandmother came across it once in an old drawer and she passed it along to me when I was about 12 years old. I'm sorry to say that I don't remember exactly where she found it, but possibly 37 Gleason Street in Medford Massachusetts, an 1890s house she and my father once owned before he met and married my mother. Anyway, it is written in longhand on a lined notebook, and the first page has disintegrated. Because I read it long ago, I remember that the author was a woman named Ella Augusta Smith. Her father was a professional lecturer, and when she was a young woman she used to travel with him and give lectures, too. They traveled all over the country. She was probably in her 80's when she wrote it. I seem to remember the date of 1913 or 1917, but that part has dissolved. I would dearly love to put it into the hands of an appropriate archive, because owning it feels like a responsibility to me. Somewhere, someday, someone might want to read it.
