Does son(waiter) have to pay IRS tip wages quarterly

My son got a job as a waiter at a very nice restaurant and makes very good tips. I know he will be taxed on that at the end of the year and probably owe money-but somebody said they have to pay the IRS quarterly not yearly. How do I find out if that is correct or not?

Not quarterly, but every paycheck. If he receives a regular paycheck from the restaurant it is his responsibility to claim his tips through them. Much easier to claim them at the restaurant. Every one of the restuarants I've worked for were very helpful in regards to how to claim the tips. He should be having this taken out each pay period, not the end of the year. The IRS can ding him for not having enough withheld (I realize that common practice to not withhold enough.) Most likely the restaurant will hold out enough to at least pull him up to minimum wage. Our state min. wage is higher than the national and my son's employer claimed $4 per hour in tips, so he ends up owing very little at the end of the year. Seems like all my paycheck was good for was paying those taxes.

I am to estimate and make tax payments on income that is not taxable when I receive it.

Example...dividends, and farm rent. I receive the packet of forms and envelopes to pay them quarterly, but my tax person told me as long as I pay the estimated tax b4 the end of the 4th quarter, there will not be a penalty. The end of the 4th quarter is Jan 15th.

If rthummer were a friend or family member, I would be horrified to be associated. Scarlett2001, If I was not happy with my hair and had it corrected, I definitely would not tip. Yes, items purchased in connection with a business venture are tax deductible, so rthummer's post again makes no sense. No, your stylist shouldn't be overly compensated for taking much too long to accomplish a task. There is no profession other than working at a convenience store that does not require some level of training. Even the convenience store clerk must learn how to run a cash register these days. The salary disparity makes me crazy as well. Ugh, I wish I never opened this thread as by blood is boiling. One last thing, any salon owner that accepts a tip is tacky, pure and simple. Low class. I am surprised that the powers that be at GW didn't pull this thread when it started getting ugly.

Thanks for all the feedback. Somehow I'm not surprised that it's a NYC and surrounding-areas thing. From what our attorney explained yesterday and what I got from my other real-estate forum, the NYC-area 'tip' is a result of two things. One, the title company rep is paid some nominal fee per closing and doesn't receive directly any percentage of the money we paid for our title insurance and title search. Two, the tip is a throwback to an earlier era when notaries were not allowed to charge for their services, and you tipped the title rep as appreciation for his/her attendance at the closing and the notary services provided. To his credit, our title company rep was 100% on the ball. The seller's attorney was an elderly gentleman who's semi-retired and handled the closing as a courtesy to his long-time clients; he was not on the ball at all. The title guy was on his cell phone from the moment he walked in, having things emailed and faxed and covering up for the seller's attorney's incompetence. Both my husband (who's an attorney himself) and our attorney privately agreed that the closing would have been postponed for a day or two without the title rep's willingness to work and find creative solutions to deal with seller's attorney's mistakes and oversights. So yeah, we tipped in the end. Our attorney said "optional but, for the job this guy did, reward him" and we did.

People, this question is not a matter of opinion. You don’t need to seek answers on the internet from those that don’t know. Pull out your etiquette books and you’ll find the answer. I recommend Letitia Baldridge - she is a wonderful writer and as White House staff she also had state experience, not just personal. I’ve held many of your opinions earlier on in life, like mtnredux. I had less money and hated tipping “on principal.” Now that I travel internationally frequently and have friends that have household staff, I know to tip when people go beyond their day-to-day jobs to provide for me. I hated doing it before because I didn’t have as much money and I was actually cheap - I figured “it was the driver’s job to drive” so I would use him all the time and save myself a bundle, then tell myself it was insulting to tip him for doing his job. He still had to do his regular job, then drive me all over, then clean the car and get it maintained and get home late. Ha. Now I’m embarrassed by my crass behavior. Would I tip the nannies even though I didn’t bring kids? Duh, no. I am just leaving Istanbul now where I was visiting my mother in the hospital. We stayed close to the hospital, but my friend loaned me her driver outside her regular use - he picked me, my husband and my father up separately to and from the airport (which can take a couple hours if traffic is bad), and drove us around on other errands and sightseeing. Of course I tipped him at the end of my stay, and he was happy to accept. Uber or a cab would have been an unpleasant driver instead of a sweet helpful driver in a clean and spacious Mercedes. Don’t be daft, tip people when they provide service. It’s the norm. Like I tell kids, learn and practice the norm - then if you want to send a particular message like you’re a cheapskate or a jerk, do it intentionally instead of ignorantly (and hopefully never, because you are more gracious than that).

I have seen tabs with precalculated tips -- usually at least 15-18%, 20% and 25%. I find it crazy that people can't figure tips -- even with a calculator on their phone. I learned something I'd never heard before -- in addition to tip-out or tip share where a percentage of the tab goes to the kitchen staff, expo/bus staff, the bar and even the host or hostess, the credit card service charge comes out of the tip paid to servers where my son works. When a table of 6 or 8 get separate checks, they get hit with 6 or 8 transactions fees. A 20% tip may or may not reach 15% to your server. I don't agree with that practice, but can't change it. Does the kitchen get charged for the food and the utilities? Sheesh.

But OP is referring to her son, who is an employee. Employee wages don't have anything to do with quarterly stuff. It's his responsiblity to claim all of his wages (which includes the tips), so why wait and take the hit at the end of the year? Less painful to do it as you go.

I guess because he gets tips his base pay is like 1.25 an hour so even if they take taxes out- there is a big gaps between what he makes and what they can take out. Of course my son is Mr. Irresponsible and wouldn't do anything intelligent like actually ask his company. All he told me is they make him fill out a tip sheet every night. I am sure his restaurant turns that in at the end of year as salary- and I am betting he will owe quite a bit-but I wasn't sure how to make him pay through the year

I'd really recommend letting your accountant handle this. When DD was a waitress, I gave up. The forms and regs were so complicated that it was well worth the money to just turn it all over to our accountant. And I'm sure the system hasn't simplified in the past few years. It won't cost that much--just send him to the right professional, and you'll know it's done right.

Good idea assalea. DH is a CPA, so I don't bother with it anymore, but I made him show me DS's return and we were looking at which box the taxes were recorded on the W-2. Of course that made the big difference in if Social Security had been held out or just federal taxes (we don't have a state income tax here.) Of course, he then had to go off on some tangent about IF there were trusts, yada, yada, yada. The man drives me crazy. All I asked was a simple question since he's only dealt with DS for the past few years.

Could your son average out his tips and get an approximate amount from that which would go to tax and then ask his employer to take out that extra amount. I have to do that as my employer doesn't take out enough even with me as married tax at single rate.

Also might want to check his paycheck as they may be smart and already take out the tax based on the sheet they have to fill out. My best friend gets tips and that is what the place she works for does.
