If it is the owner "nothing", anyone else. $5.00

At least $20 if you were happy.

I would probably give at least $10. More if I really liked the job that was done. It's so hard to find someone that does your hair the way you like.
~Betsy

Agree on the owner = nothing. Otherwise, if it's a good job, I'd do 20%.

I tip $5 to the shampoo girl and $15 for my stylist.

If I were happy with the service and it is not the owner of the salon I would give the stylist at least $15.

I gave $15 tip. A friend of mine said I gave to much. I
was just checking what the KT'ers thought. Thanks.

I'd give $15.00 to $20.00.
Leslie

That's about what mine costs...and I tip $20

I tip by the percent - 15 to 20 percent. I also tip the owner if they did my hair. I know it is hard to believe but the owner really doesn't make as much as they used to. I know because my niece bought the place where she was working as a stylist about 2 years ago. According to her, she is not making much more than she was before she owned the place because of all the expenses. Like everything else, things have gone up a lot and she can't raise the prices that much or people will not keep coming. Also, she indicates it is very hard to find good people and even harder to keep them. So, yes I tip the owner if the owner did my hair but I only tip the person that did my hair.

I've never had anything that expensive done, but I tip $5 on a $20 haircut, so I I'd probably tip $15 for an $85 job...that would make it an even $100.

Twenty and $3 to $5 for the shampoo girl. I'm a big tipper.

Twenty if you are really happy.....owner or not.
Less if you're not exactly ecstatic.
The owner does my hair and I tip her well.

I tip by percentage - 15-20% of the total.

But then, I never pay for a shampoo or a colorist, LOL. My neck issues preclude me ever having a shampoo in a salon, and I like my natural color, even including the sparkling silver I'm getting.

I pay about $30 for a really good haircut.

If I were to need to pay $85. for a hair cut, shampoo, conditioner, blow dry, styling (such as might be possible with a fringe), even high lights ...

... it'd blow my lights out!

Even if it included blow job, I think.

My wallet gets the screamin' meemies just to contemplate such a catastrophe!

ole joyful

I think that was terribly inappropriate for the KT. Geeez.

I would tip $15, clubm, and make it an even $100.

I can't believe you said that!

I tip by % also. Usually 20 to 25% when I have my hair done. It's a hard job trying to get things right and please your customer and standing on your feet all day. I don't cheap out when it comes to tipping. NancyLouise

Why am I not surprised???

I pay $15 for just a haircut and that includes the tip.

AND..I just happen to have a button someone needs to wear!
{{!gwi}}

Oh, come-on, kiddos, lighten up. Joyful is trying to make a funny responce. I feel the same way about these prices. I think it is nice that some of you are able to pay these kind of prices for hair care, but there are also a lot of us who wouldn't think of paying that much. Isn't it nice that we, here in the USA, can be free to agree or disagree? JMHO Dottie

Geez Louise, can't we accept a little tongue in cheek adult humor? If you don't like what OJ says, pass on by. I wouldn't pay that much either, but if you want to and can afford to, more power to you. I keep my hair medium length, trim it myself, and color it myself every couple of weeks.

I think you should tip your hairdresser just as well or better than you'd tip your waitress, but that's my opinion. A waitress just takes the order, and brings the food (and anything forgotten while ordering) She/he isn't cooking the food. The hairdresser is doing all the work. Well, mine anyway. She does the shampooing too. I love going to get my hair done. It's the only extravagance I allow myself. Besides, I never could do my own hair and make it look good.
Leslie

I figure a even $100.00 would be sufficient too. Makes me glad I color my own hair sometimes. Although, my hairdresser went up to $40 for a cut and style. I'm sure she would be that high to add a hightlighting too.

Say WHAT OJ??? Call me a prude, I just don't think THAT comment was necessary to get your point across.

clubm, think that your tip was entirely appropriate and you didn't overdo it.

Speaking of "overdoing it", OJ had already used the term "blowdry", so when he said "blowjob", I'm assuming he wasn't talking about drying his HAIR. Usually when someone knows they're gonna make a controversial post, they warn others off with the words "may offend".

I think $15 is reasonable for a tip, providing you are happy with the work.

I cannot believe an innocent thread like this has to be turned into "adult humor". If I wanted that kind of humor, there are plenty of sites I can go to.

Plain uncalled for here.

My hairdresser tells me that when she does her taxes, she's expected to claim a certain percentage of her earned wage (she didn't say what percentage) as tips, and then she's taxed accordingly, whether she's made that actual amount or not. I assume by her tone, she is expected to claim an amount in tips that she has not received in the tax year. I don't know how to find out if this is true or not, since sometimes I only give 10%, other times 15%. I'd like to know what the government expects her to claim - if it is 15% then I'd feel the need to be more generous, plus get my hair done less frequently.

Kioni

See if I got what we need to know. This is from Google:

In the absence of documentation to show how much that server earned in tips the IRS is going to assume that they earned at least 8% of their food and beverage sales. So if a server sells $1,000 of food than the IRS is going to automatically assume that they took home $80 in tips that night. They're going to treat that $80 as taxable income and depending on what tax bracket the server is in they might get 25% of the $80 which is $20. So when a customer tips 8% it isn't all going to the government, it's simply that all of it is going to be taxable

If I think someone says something idiotic, then I will say so. OJ, that post was idiotic.
Enough of the SOB already.
Or maybe we should move this thread to Hot Topics?
Along with every other thread that has the mere hint of controversy.
Geeeesh.

OJ - from a former minister?

Whe I waited table sin college it was 8% of sales. So, when someone stiffs a waiter or waitress, it actually costs them. Although 8% is far less than most people tip, remember the waiter often has to "tip out" or "tip share" with the bartender, busboy and sometimes the host or hostess.
Back to clubm's question: I think you did fine.

I usually tip my hairdresser 20% and think you did fine.

Regarding the admonitions to SOB, that's pretty hard to do until after you've already read something you don't expect. A couple of weeks ago when I realized that I was reading excruciating details of a bowel movement I did stop. Sure didn't expect that and didn't find it pleasant reading! LoL!

To each their own, but perhaps a little decorum. But of course, that's what makes the world go 'round.

Going to my hairdresser now. She's the owner, so I think I'll ask her about the tax thing.

If I'm pleased, then I tip 20% and normally round up if it's an odd amount. And that would be for the owner of the salon since he cuts my hair. I do my color but my normal cut and brush dry is $28 which I think is very reasonable for our area. Clubm, I don't think you tipped too much so long as you were happy with the results.

Bump, I agree, that button would definitely be appropriate for a certain someone. What a crude comment for "mixed company" and on a public forum no less...and from a retired man of the cloth. Good grief!

But what do you do if you pay hairdresser directly, and not the salon? She pays a monthly space rent, not a cut of her earnings.

Talk about prices...high/low lights & color, cut & styling is $160. OUCH! I really don't want to add another $32 for a tip -- I guess I should just round up to $200, LOL.

Geez, don't stone the man for one slang phrase. I notice you all know exactly what he's talkin' bout LOL!

I hope I'm still managing to tick people off in my 80s - heck I just want to live to be in my 80s.

I can't afford expensive highlights anymore. I think I used to tip $15-$20 on $85.

Very sleezy comment in a post about tipping. Makes me wonder what he did as a man of the cloth. NancyLouise

But that is the point, Paula, it is not just one phrase, it is a pattern.

I think if you could afford $85 for a haircut, shampoo and highlights, you could afford a 15% to 20% tip. Otherwise, perhaps your primary maintenance is too high.

OMG!!!! Here we go again. What a hot mess. I will laugh the rest of the day over the absurdity of it all. LOL

To think I almost didn't open this post because I thought heck we have talked about tipping before. LOL

I'm still laughing

"Geez, don't stone the man for one slang phrase. I notice you all know exactly what he's talkin' bout"!? Just because a person knows the meaning of something (wow..I could insert a LOT of words here, but out of RESPECT I won't) doesn't mean the "slang phase" should be used in mixed company AND among people a person doesn't really know!

I've got to wonder if that same "slang phase" had been used behind a pulpit, instead of a computer monitor, if the congregration would have found it OK!?

Back on the original subject, I got a haircut this morning (a REAL haircut -- as in: short!). She charges $25. I tipped her $15 coz I love it.

You do the math...

:-)

And I want to see the picture! Of Rita's haircut, sheesh! lolol

I got a perm, cut and style this morning. It costs $68. I tipped her $15. Was wondering if I tipped too much or not enough, sounds like I'm right on!
Kathy G in MI

clubm-I would have tipped $15 dollars also. I normally tip about 15% depending on how I like the cut/color etc, and I also like to have nice round numbers (totaled out to $100).

I've never thought about a waitress getting the 15%, yet she's not the one cooking...interesting!

Teresa-who desperately needs to color over all her "new" greys!

I think a $20 tip for a $85 haircut,shampoo and high
lights is right on.

As for the comment by joyfulguy...alot of what he says I don't get anyway. This I did, and I must say, I was shocked. I certainly would have not expected a comment like this from him tho.
I can't wait for him to come back and try to 'splain this one.

not funny at all....I was enjoying reading what everyone had to say up until that point

Ah-hem! (ignoring the joke & comment)...

Ok, back to the tip. Geez whiz! My hair cut from ProCut is about $14 and I tip an even $17. And if I got a bit extra that day, I'd tip an even $20. I'd rather spend more on the tip than on my hair. (The comment refers to me only, not trying to offend anyone). So, that's like a little over 20%? My hair grows so fast that pretty soon I'd be back again. That's why I just can't justify myself spending so much on my hair that would change 2 weeks later.

I would tip 20% or round off to $100, not that I would ever spend that much on my hair. It just isn't in the budget. I hate the fact that all the chain hair cut places have raised their prices.
Also ignoring the rather surprising comment.
