No closet- need clothing storage

My daughter is moving from the Midwest to a small (maybe 3-400 sq ft) apartment in NYC. It doesn't have a closet, just a small storage unit under a bed loft that she hopes to put a rod in. Anyone have suggestions for an online source for a great wardrobe or wall unit with either doors or an area for baskets. She's been looking online at various places (Crate & Barrel, West Elm, and others), but I thought I'd see if anyone here had actual experience in purchasing anything like this.

Try Ikea. They have a lot of closet inserts, wardrobes, etc.

Sheesharee, my DH and I are just getting ready to finish the built-in storage in our two closets, which are about the same dimensions as yours. We are doing L-shaped storage, that is, along two walls, so there's enough room to comfortably stand/dress in there. We're doing built-in stacks of shoe/sweater shelves, with double hanging bars on one wall and singles on the other. The empty wall will have hooks for robes, belts, etc. Each closet will also have a rolling laundry hamper we can easily roll down the hall to the washer/dryer area. I carefully planned it all out depending on the measurements of what we each need to store. It will probably end up costing us about $250 in materials by the time we're done. I'll try to post some photos once the main component are installed, and then later (hopefully by next weekend!) when it's all painted and has clothes in it :) We have been living out of piles and remote closets and basement boxes for over a year now since we had to gut this part of the house due to a mold problem and bathroom renovation. It's been so frustrating not knowing where stuff is. I am sooooooooooo looking forward to having nice, organized closets!

This is hard one. New home build has.. (small farmhouse) We have a pantry and a tall pantry cabinet too.. pantry has vaccum & brushes. We have a small hallway between rooms that has space for officey stuff, charging, counter for snacks for party.. but mostly printer and laptop support stuff.. upper cabinets. We have a dresser in the small main floor bath instead of closet. We have a shoe closet because we like Japan style. We have a large nice coat closet plus a simple mud room with hooks at another entrance and farm boots. we have a homeschool supply cabinet/a matching one for coat closet we have a linen closet/built in in the hallway upstairs that is actually a basecabinet with wood counter and a upper wall cabinet built in (like office hallway) we have a full linen closet outside of bathroom door on this level too sharing the upstairs vac/broom and cleaning supplies we have a shallow shelf with sliding doors in upstairs bath for small items but not a fan of cloth hanging out in the bathroom.. in hallway. interestingly we don't have closets for the kids yet. We want an easy layout with what we have with windows and doors.. vents.. going modern and growing with them style.. we have are farmers but we have a 4' wide door in BR with another 4' wide open curtain place for me.. I like tall dressers and need more places for folding, jeweler and underwear.. have nice pieces that do best folded.. hate closet systems, want light and pretty space instead. Velvet curtains ;) basment is full! We have a plan for dedicated and double checked (insects and others) but want true dressers indtead of tubs and wall stuff. Want to sew and love basement.. don't want walls covered.. want art and more fancy room stuff in basement. Going for dressers for Christmas, sweaters.. and sometimes buffet peices.. do not want a Rubbermaid look! I want to do something amazing with my basement too.. not sure exactly but more living room, play room, art studio with storage much lower than normal storage rooms. Also having a vac & broom in the have closet.

Sounds like most of your items don't need to be accessed. You could buy cardboard boxes, fill them up with your items, mark the contents on each box, and then stack them in the closet. That's going to give you the best use of the space. Dishpack boxes are larger and would be good for the shoes.

Put a portable temporary closet in the tub and call it good. You do not touch or alter a thing permanently. It will cost you way more if you ruin it with holes in walls

NYC is undoubtedly expensive, but you don't know until you ask. I called a number of local closet guys (not the sleek 'Classy Closet' type folks--they are expensive) real, local small business owners. I got custom closets throughout my house and they were about 10% cheaper than IKEA and I didn't have to put them together, haul cumbersome boxes, etc... Some contractors don't like to play the game, but I give everyone a sample size and ask them to quote me a price over the phone. I've already figured out what IKEA will cost me, so I waste a couple of hours on the phone (put on a phone headset and clean my toilets at the same time, so really, I'm out nothing.) You come up with an interesting price, I'll have you come out and give me an in home estimate. In the closet instance, it really came out to my advantage to use local folks.

Thanks for the replies. Initially we'd both thought IKEA; however she's trying to buy things here in the midwest & have them shipped to NY (new employer paying for moving). There is no IKEA remotely close to where we're at in the midwest and it can't be ordered online.

Contacting a "closet" type place could be a possibility but she's concerned about the time to make the contacts & meet w/ salespeople. She's just out of Law School & starting with a firm so she's anticipating minimum 12-15 hour work days.

The Gothic Cabinet Craft site looked interesting.

She's been looking online & found a few more trendy/contemporary items she likes from Thomasville available through a local furniture dealer.

I do appreciate everyone's responses.

I was surprised at the lack of closet space when I moved to NY from Chicago. I ended up buying an amoire. If you're near Chicago, there are plenty of furniture outlets that have great ones. Crate & Barrel, Carson's and Macy's are all in Naperville (about 45 min. west of Chicago).
