I remember that phase. We had toys in every room of the house. They need to be where you are so you can watch them though, so that means you may have to have toys in your living room or kitchen or anywhere else. Hang in there. They'll eventually get old enough so that you can say "no toys in the living room" when you need to keep it clean. The good news is, with twins they will soon be content to stay back in their bedroom and play with each other. My twins are 10 now and didn't cling to my pant leg for nearly as long as their older sisters. They're so much more independent. We have a walk-in toy closet now with shelving all the way up. I keep toys with lots of pieces (like legos) up high so they have to ask to play with them, that way I can make sure they have the last thing put away first. I never thought I would be able to get my kids to stick to a one-thing-at-a-time rule but I did somehow. We have toys sorted in tubs and they've learned that they have to put away one tub to get out another. It doesn't work perfectly but I can walk across their bedroom floor MOST of the time. lol When my twins were toddlers, I just had a couple of big laundry baskets to keep toys in that were in the living room. They're light and easy to carry room-to-room and easy to carry back to their bedroom. I need better storage though. Wish we had an ikea store here. I'm always reading about things people have found there.

First, measure your clothes to determine how much short. medium and long hanging space you need. Rather than one set of drawers under the hanging rods, have a stack of drawers. Instead of bifold doors, have double doors. You can mirror the inside and use both doors to get a good look at your front and back. Here's an example of a closet with double doors. These doors are very wide. I have 18" wide doors, for a 36" wide opening, which is plenty. Inexpensive door mirrors are around 14-16" wide and 60" long, so they can fit easily on the inside of the closet door.

Funny this thread popped back up! Ever since I commented on it I had been debating on ordering those bins from land of nod. I looked in to the ones from the company store, and they are cheaper. The company store also has sales. The difference though is that the ones from land of nod come with hardware to mount them to the wall. I was just about ready to order them. I had sample chips of the colors and had navy blue picked out. Then I came across this ridiculously long farm work table thing on ebay.... It was close to my house and the price was right. I also like that it can stay when he grows up and I can put other things on it someday. I just have to find some bins now and get my son to start cleaning up with me. He has just started doing that. I like the canvas box type things shown above, but it seems like kids can't see in them too well. That isn't a problem? I thought I would need either plastic bins or bins that have a lower front so it is more obvious what is inside. For now I have been just stacking his toys on the shelves and on the floor underneath.

I’d do the walk-in but think about how you can repurpose that space for your use now. Just because it says ‘walk-in closet’ on the plan, it doesn’t mean that’s all you need use it for. Put built-ins for your clothes and then use the rest of the space in the room for a cozy sitting area, or add a small ‘morning kitchen’ type space where you can keep what you need to make a morning or evening drink. With so many people working different hours I think no separate dressing area at all could be a real issue if you ever need to sell. (If you really don’t want it then I’d at least try to keep a room next to the bedroom that could be turned into a closet if someone so prefers in the future, just by putting in a doorway.) ETA: We’re looking at moving to a house that has a not-very-large walk-in closet and I’m pondering a combination of closet and built-ins. The closet has a window, also, so I’m thinking to even put built-ins in there so everything has protection from the sun without needing to have the blind closed all the time. However one reason I think this will likely work okay for us is our wardrobes tend to fit into categories anyway - work clothes versus casual versus lounge versus for-messy-stuff versus specialized sports items, etc. So no one category of stuff is terribly large, which means all of my work clothes should fit in one area of a wardrobe, so I will be able to see it all by opening just one set of doors. I think it would be much more annoying to have to go between multiple areas to put together a single outfit because tops are here, skirts over there, sweaters elsewhere again, etc.
