Dining Room Table - Granite or Tile Topped

Looking for Granite or tile-topped dining room tables, so I don't have to mess with table pads and tablecloths every time we sit down for dinner. Not comtemporary styles, but traditional or a heavy dark wood table with a hardy top that we can sit and eat at without covering the top.

What's the matter with a good solid oak...or walnut or maple table covered with 3 coats of poly urethane?

I've been considering getting tile ones in the link below for the same reasons as the OP--you can also get granite. Lots of styles. I'm considering tile because a wood edge will be warmer to lean agains than stone--we live in Wisconsin and keep our house at 68 in the winter and stone gets cold. I've had a teak kichen table for 20 years, and am sick of the constant oiling. Will three coats of poly really hold up as well as tile or granite?

You need to re-amalgamate the finish. Find out what the finish is and what solvent will "melt" it...then flow some of that on gently with a paint brush and let everything melt together. The trick is to find what the finish is. Anyideas how old the table is? or if it has ever been refinished? Linda C

Also got BergerPads in May of 2010, dont remember which of these we got but guessing for a $500 dining 4seat dining set, we went with just the good (especially since I'd only wanted black anyway). Having glass on wood does not allow the wood to breathe and can ruin it. I would always prefer the warmth that wood gives to a dining room, and being just a little bit careful does not seem like too high a price to pay. It really depends on what kind of table you'll feel comfortable with overall and will enjoy living with.

We purchased a fairly expensive tile table some years ago. I really like it. You might want to consider one with the grouting that is more vinyl rather than the grouting that is porous. The vinyl wipes up better. Still hard to get in the cracks though. That parts bugs me. Nice for kids with painting and markers. Wipes right off. Hot pans don't hurt the table either.

I had a granite table made out of leftover slab from my recent remodel for my kitchen. I *love* it. It replaced a glass top table that was always smudgy, even when it was clean. As for wood, I love it for a formal dining area, but I have never - no matter what kind of wood and matter how may coats of polyurethane - seen a wood table hold up anywhere nearly as well as stone will. Also, I'm not a big fan of grout, so I'd avoid tile for a regularly used table, unless it had epoxy grout.

Yes.....3 coats of poly will hold up as well as tile or granite. Plus it's warmer, won't get crud in the grout, if you knock a glass over it won't break, doesn't show finger prints like shiny granite and won't be ruined by a dribble of vinegar or wine...
And it's a LOT cheaper!!

Thanks Linda. After having teak so long, I was leery of wood. But like you siad, wood is warmer, no grout and more foregiving than tile, so now I'm back looking for polyurethaned wood. Will poly get water rings from glasses being set on it?
