Need help with fireplace smoke!!!

I have a fireplace that smokes out the house intermittently. ItÂs a newer looking fireplace made out of brick with glass doors on it. It has clay rectangular tile liners for the flue. It has a rectangular hole in the center of the fireplace floor that leads to a hole in the basement wall. When I bought the house there was an odd round metal plate laying on top of this hole. I left it there. I started a fire last week with no problem. I am using older wood left behind when they sold me the house. This week, I started a fire and not all of the smoke was going up the chimney. At times the smoke poured into the house, and other times barely any at all. I shined a flashlight down in front of the open glass doors and saw light smoke coming out. But then all of a sudden, or if I rotated a log, a ton of smoke would pour out. Any thoughts on troubleshooting? The flue looks clean to me real clean. I feel cold air when I put my hand to the flue. Thanks.
