Can I place ceramic tile without space between them (no grout)?

I am planning on laying tile and like the look of tile with out any space between them (hate the look of grout). I plan on staggering the design so straight lines are not a huge issuee.

Can I lay ceramic tile with out any space between them? If not, what type of tile or stone can this effect be best done with?

It's best to have some grout, as not all tiles are perfectly sized.

Your best bet for minimal grout joints will be by using a rectified tile.

In a zero grout layout, or even with a 1/16' grout joint, any deviations in tile size will throw your pattern off as you move across the floor.

Minimal or zero grout lines will also accentuate any lippage between adjacent tiles.

Grout is important.When grout does its job Â locking tiles tight, keeping out water, and giving floors and walls a finished look Â nobody pays much attention. It's only when grout fails, becoming stained, cracked, or falling out altogether, that people take notice.

But grout deserves more respect. "Not only does grout fill the voids, it makes the floor, wall, or countertop stronger by bonding the tiles together and preventing the edges of a tile from chipping and cracking.

Concerning the tiles at the ceiling, the taping mud should clean off with water. As for the shower pan tile, go to Lowes or HD, and look for a NONacid grout haze cleaner. They may try and sell you sulfamic acid crystals. Don't use them-- not yet. Try the nonacid cleaner, first. If that doesn't work, the sulfamic acid is the next step.

We now installing small tiles and it irks me that the manufacturer uses such cheap backing! DS found that covering the larger areas of the tile sheet with plastic (while cutting) helped keep the whole sheet from getting wet and falling apart. Drying off the saw tray between cuts also helped. So........I can understand the difficulty the guy is having if he's trying to cut a 1" tile that has no stability! Ideally, you should have a design that requires no cutting of 1" tiles. I think you should buy some stone/ceramic molding that will fill in the gap you have left at the edge. You could even take it around all the edges if you want a more decorative design. Check out 1/2 rounds and chairmolding........we're using travertine molding with granite........looks great. I would try to avoid a 1" wide grout line since it will end up cracking. Buy the molding and lay out the design before he starts.

Danger! All of you are forgetting one major fact. Until thinset is cured, like in 24 hours, it has a "biscuit" strength phase and will release tile if they are disturbed. So, if you walk on a freshly tiled floor and there is enough thinset under a tile to fill a gap, the thicker thinset area will take longer to bond. When you walk on it, it will release and although you make a perfect grout phase, the grout line will crack in two days because the tile is loose. You will need to take up the bad tile, grind out the old thinset and do it right. Short time tile jobs are done with a product named "SPEEDSET". It can be grouted in 6 hours without any bad results. Maybe that's what the commercial contractor did. Look into the new anti microbial grouts and your grout will last longer too.

Quick update for anyone who might care or finds themselves in a similar situation... I ordered some more matte finish tiles to play with and while playing I thought I would grab some of the leftover tiles I already have and try it with the grout I had bought at Lowe’s which was Mapei Flexcolor CQ in pearl gray. Well needless to say the crackle issue did not appear at all. So I’m assuming it was the unsanded grout that was recommended to me when I ordered the tile that was the problem? The Mapei grout that I used does not specify sanded or unsanded but there are no visible lines after grouting with it.

U can use the least separation possible. The tiles may chip if they're too closed to one

Another option is luxury vinyl with a tile look.
