recycled vegetable oil question

I grabbed a bottle of used, but strained vegetable oil and added a cup of it to a pumpkin muffin recipe. I meant to use the new stuff, but grabbed the used on by mistake. The oil had been strained through a coffee filter and looked perfectly clear. It was not used for a meat based food (wonton wrappers filled with nutella, I confess). My guess is I will toss the muffins, but I am curious why the oil might not be good to use. Does high heat break down oil? It did not smell bad, but in hindsight, it smelled like cooking oil after it has been used.
