put about2 Tablespoons of dishwasher detergent into the pot....add 3 inches of water, bring it to a boil, turn off and let it sit for 24 hours....
Then hit it with the scrubbie.

Sprinkle the bottom with baking soda, cover with water, bring to boil, turn off heat and let sit on the burner to cool. Wash as usual. You might need to do it twice, but it will clean the pot!

I have good results with Bar Keepers's Friend when I scorch something in one of my stainless pots. A little water and a liberal sprinkle of Bar Keeper's Friend. Leave covered overnight. It will come off easily.

Or Arm & Hammer oven cleaner - a spritz left covered overnight in a warm oven.

I had pondered putting some baking soda in it and letting it sit until I got home, but I wasn't sure if the soda would discolor the SS or not so I figured I better aske the experts!

I use the method Lindac posted and I don't wait overnight. I wash while the pot is still hot. Sparkling pots and pans always!

I use a green scrubbie and some Soft Scrub. Bar Keepers friend works for me, too.

Heck, I don't know, that's why my pots look like that. And when I first glanced at the title I thought it said "I scorched my but*". Ahem.

Bar Keeper's Friend really is great stuff. I was just learning to cook when my husband (then boyfriend) got a new set of All-Clad for Christmas and I completely burned a good layer of olive oil on the bottom of his brand new skillet (had to take it on the back porch it was smoking so badly). The people at Williams-Sonoma recommended using it and the skillet was good as new! You don't need to let it set or anything, but I'd wear gloves because it's hard on the hands.

I have done Lindac way or Cream of tarter with water and let boil a while, stir occasionally with a woooden spoon. I also agree with Bar Keepers Friend. It doesn't smell to good but it does work better than other brands like Bon Ami. All Clad company recommend it too.

Believe it or not, a dryer sheet left over night with some water will do the trick. The next morning, the scorched stuff will come right off.

I also use powdered dishwasher detergent like Lindac and homepro01. I add about two or three inches of water, let it boil a few minutes and scrub with a scrubbie as soon as it cools enough.

I've had good luck spraying with Scrubbing Bubbles, letting it sit for a couple of hours, then scrubbing.

Linda, I had the same thing happen to me about a month ago making banana jam. It was a doozy! Worst I've every scorched a pot.

I used Bar Keepers Friend, but like Chrissy mentioned, use gloves. I scrubbed with w a Scotch Brite pad for about an hour and it tore up my hands because I didn't wear gloves.

My fix is for scorched stainless pots when all else fails. I scorched a brand new large heavy gauge stock pot so bad that after 3 days of soaking and scubbing it was still black. I was at the sink actually crying because it was a brand new pot that I had been wanting for a long time. My husband asked what is wrong with you and blubbering I showed him the pot he said stop crying I can fix it and came back in from his shop with the pot looking brand new. He used a scotch brite buffing wheel on a small air grinder. Now if I blacken a pot I just let him fix it. LOL

Well, I have one of those enamel coated Iron easy clean.. ahem.. dutch ovens. I wish my kids would have listened. I wanted Black Iron!! I can't get that enamel clean to save my soul!!

If it's black iron! Just put it in the oven and self clean, but that enamel stuff sucks!!

I soak with a couple of tablespoons of Cascade. After a few hours, it washes right out with no scrubbing.

Dawn makes a cleaner in a blue bottle, can't think of the name of it, but it is foamy and is sort of like an oven cleaner. It might be called power cleaner, not sure. I have some but I am upstairs and it is late at night. Anyway, it does a great job on stainless. Put it on and let it stand awhile and then scrub it off. Works great on several things. Walmart and Meijer both sell it.

Wow, I never knew there were so many ways to clean a scorched pot! LOL

I put some Cascade in the pot with a couple of inches of water, brought it to a boil. Once it cooled, the burnt gunk just peeled off! Worked like a charm and my stainless steel is sparkling once again!

I have a stainless steel double boiler - actually it's a triple boiler/steamer. I put some ribs in the steamer part and some (but clearly not enough) water in the bottom pot and then went back to watching my series. Time just ran away and the next thing I knew the smoke alarms were going off. Well, the water had boiled out of the bottom which was now black. So I tried Brillo with soap and scouring powder. No go. I'm going to try a few of the other cures I've seen on this site.
