Hi everyone!

Have any of you ever had any experience with network marketing?

Can you give me any information on it - general as well as specific?

I have found a company that has a really exciting present ion and seem different from others I have looked at but as strapped as we are I am really caution but we have to do something!

Network marketing also know as Multi-level marketing is often a source of income only for those high up on the pyramid. All NM's will claim that they are not pyramid schemes and that they are different from the others.

One of the key distinguishing factors is whether there is more compensation for recruiting and sustaining new members or for selling the product. Be cautious if the plan requires a high amount of money to get in.

Find out how much of their product is sold to consumers and how much is sold just to dealers, making them them (or you) end of the line in terms of marketing product. Will you be required to buy a lot of product each year to maintain your status? Is there really a good market for ther product?

Do some online research on your specific company. Get information from people who have nothing to sell you.

I had a colleague who got into MLM in a big way. In order to avoid the "ponzi scheme" appearance, though, a certain dollar amount of goods must be sold every month. Once his friends and colleagues had all the snacks and soap powder they needed, that meant, in order to be considered an "active" member, he purchased the stuff himself. So, every month he was buying more stuff he didn't need in order to make his "points" or whatever. His apartment filled up with products. But it was okay, he told us, because, and this was the phrase the company taught him to use, he "bought it from himself."

Now I don't know about you, once I have purchased something, I consider myself the owner. I don't have to "buy" it again, from myself, or anyone else.

He ended up stealing from our employer and getting fired. He moved in with his newlywed, pregnant stepdaughter for a while, and last I heard had lived with and mooched off a series of relatives.

The MLM company has changed it's name, but not it's tactics. Your upline or sponsor will tell you that you're close to making it big, and strongarm you into spending a certain dollar amount every month, whether you can use, or sell the product, or not.

The thrust of the MLM was to buy whatever you usually buy "From yourself" instead of a store. Much greater savings come from a change of lifestyle. If you're truly in dire straits, you can borrow "The Tightwad Gazette" from your public library, free, and learn how to really cut your budget and save money.

Just about finished with construction of our new custom built home. I'd just offer a few important tips that I wish I had known prior to beginning this arduous process. Plan to save enough to put 20% down. I think you may have a hard time getting financing on a DIY job, but you may want to consider hiring a builder to lay the foundation, frame it and get it under roof and then take it from there. Shop around some new construction lenders and ask. If you decide to build here are some things to keep in mind. First, I would have much more heavily scrutinized the builders allowances for the various categories. ie. electrical, plumbing, flooring, cabinets and countertops, etc. Since this was our first built home, we had absolutely no idea how much materials cost or what the labor costs would be. Do a ton of research on the costs of various items (cabinetry, counter tops, flooring, light fixtures and plumbing fixtures are all big ticket items). Talk to subcontractors and find out generally how much it would cost for example to install the kitchen cabinets that you like in an estimated size kitchen. Look at the features, brands and models of items that your builder wants to put in your house. Is the grade he is offering satisfactory to you? If so, great. If not, it will cost you to upgrade. I say figure that out up front, negotiate the allowances upward and get the upgrades in the original contract/mortgage. Trust me-It will be less aggravating in the long run. Go online and price items to keep him in check. Of course, he is going to take a little cut on top of everything. He is in business to make a profit. Your job is to make sure it is not an unreasonable profit. You may find like me and I'm sure many others, that builders will try to get away with offering very skimpy allowances knowing full well that you will never be able to build what you want for that amount. They are absolutely counting on you going over in almost every category where custom homes are concerned. The allowances I got would have only allowed me to put very basic amenities (Builder grade stuff) in a very expensive large custom home. Unless you prepare and plan ahead, I would say it is probably that you will go over AT LEAST10-15% of the contract price in overages (both change orders and unforseen overages.) My excavation allowance went over $4000 because we had a rainy month and it was muddier than usual. My electrical allowance went over $3000 because we had to increase the number of recessed lights and electrical outlets in the house because in our opinion, the builder only put in the bare minimum to satisfy code. No dimmers were in the allowance so tack on $20 bucks for every dimmer switch we added. The list goes on and on. We went over our initial contract price by 15% and that was with a good bit of pre-planning. I only wish I had done more. Keep in mind that this overage money has to come out of your pocket on a monthly basis while the build is progressing. You must keep a hefty chunk of change in the bank because much of it is inevitable if you want the house of your dreams. If you negotiate all of the features and amenities you want up front, you can minimize the damage after breaking ground. Also, Let the builder know that you are on top of things by visiting the site often ( I stopped by almost every day). If you stay heavily involved in the process, there will be less mistakes, less delays, and less chance you will get taken for a ride. Communicate with your builder! As far as the DIY angle...Some builders (mine included) don't mind if you do some of the work yourself. Others won't allow it until they are done with the contract. I built my own deck while construction was ongoing and saved myself over ten grand. Good luck with your future build. It is smart that you are planning ahead. Yes - that was fun ... but ... ... full consequences after nine months? You've never had kids, right? How about something like 50 - 70 years? Both markets (i.e. Dow Industrials and TSE S&P 60, both in the 12,000 area) are up today. But the Dow Industrials were up yesterday (Monday) about 50, figuring that the over-the-weekend maneuvering fixed things ... but the TSE 60, heavier linked to financials and resource stuff, was down about 300 (about 450, intra-day). And my bank stock that I was crying the blues over when it went down from the 80s into the 70s, then the 60s (from 106, last May) ... descended into the 50s (down 46%). Is it time to buy more? Maybe - but I think that it'd be a different bank! They've goofed more than once in recent years. jlom51, I agree about the wisdom of dollar cost averaging for most of us, as I've said on occasion, and recently referred here to my actions in recent months as an indicator: bought in November, bought in December, bought in January. But not in February ... I guess because I thought that things were bound lower. Which makes me a market timer, at that time. And I've been a market timer for some time, I guess, for I had bought only sporadically for quite an extended period in recent years (being retired and living on pensions, but still putting together some savings from time to time). I still have enough for a couple of purchases for cash (so I had developed a certain kitty in the meantime). I can make some more purchses using a line of credit, as well. Plus expect that a buyout (largest in Canadian history, including Canada's largest phone co.) that's to conclude in a few months, ought to put some more cash in my pocket available for later purchasing. At present I'm aiming at investing periodically through year-end ... but may have some more share certificates issued, if the market isn't into recovery by then, enabling me to build larger assets underlying my line of credit. Actually, I think that much of it is available without issuing the certificates, as the bank that carries the line of credit (plus some accounts) is the home of the discount broker that I use, so they are inter-related. If I borrow from the brokerage using margin account, usually the interest rate is about 1% higher. At an issue cost of $35. - 50., it takes a while to save the cost of issuing in interest saving, unless the certificate represents a fairly large amount of asset. But it helps if you don't figure to sell the asset for a while. However ... crowding age 80 - how long may "a while" turn out to be? And I haven't sold anything in recent years except several that I've been forced out of due to their being sold, in one instance being taken both private and foreign-based ... and the current one partly so. We've had a vibrant mining and resource-based system, but during the past few years several of our majors have been taken over, on most occasions by foreign companies. Brascan, Noranda, Inco, Falcombridge, Dofasco, Alcan and Ipsco, among others ... it's to cry over. The Australians, in a similar boat, weren't so stupid, as several of their mining companies have become major world players, BHP Billiton, for one. Several years ago, BHP was Broken Hill Proprietary (a gold miner?). We're like a farmer, selling off his farm, ten acres at a time. I'm going away to cry in a corner, for a while. I have some equity-based mutual funds, bought a number of years ago: some have a good growth record, but several don't. About 40 years ago, when I practised as a liberal Protestant clergyperson, some of my parishioners wondered how come I subscribed to financial periodicals. I told them that bread cost me the same price that it cost them, so learning how money works was important - perhaps especially so for me, as my annual income was quite likely lower than theirs. Further, since I lived in a church-owned house, when I retired, became disabled, or fired ... I'd have to provide my own housing - and that at a higher price than it was at that time. Personally, after over 20 years as a personal financial advisor, during the first year of which I sold mutual funds, but after that selling no financial products, I prefer to see people invest directly into stocks, when someone becomes knowledgeable about the markets, and has some asset base built up. It has been my understanding that markets usually average more like 7 - 8% over the long term, and if U.S.-based fund managers charge 1.5%, that's about 20% of the growth. A number of managers in Canada charge over 2% for basic equity-based funds, higher for some kinds: which is more like 25 - 30% of the average rate of growth. It is my understanding that Merriman, referred to above, is primarily interested in mutual funds - is he involved in selling them? There was a guy in this area that used to publish a book annually evaluating mutual funds, who doesn't any longer, I think, as he felt that there were more effective ways to fly. Some advisors have a system of buying stocks based on the Dow-Jones Average (e.g. "Dogs of the Dow" - high dividend payers, at low stock price) which has, over many years, provided a better rate of return than most of the mutual fund managers have achieved. I've not followed those results relative to the Dow - but a person who has evaluated a similar system based on the Toronto market has done better than 90% of fund managers, back-checked almost 30 years. Which means that I can put the fund manager's fees (and the trailer fees that they pay to the fund sales people) into my own pocket. Tonight I'm to attend a monthly meeting with about 20 other local subscribers to a major Canadian personal money management magazine, which carries no ads, so is totally subscriber driven. The local meeting has been in operation for over 10 years - I've been attending for about 6 or 7 years, I think. They approach money management from a variety of viewpoints: I've learned a lot there. Plus the course that stockbrokers take (over 20 years ago) and six courses leading to Chartered Financial Planner (only passed 5). Though they are a bit tough, would be useful for many individual investors, I think. Every one of us has a part-time job: learning how to manage money. Some do it much more effectively than others - and most of the others suffer for their ignorance/shortage of knowledge. Good wishes for effective management of your money - think of all of the extra hours of work you'll have to put in to build a comparable lifestyle, if you don't. Ha! I'm still dealing with probate for my grandmother's estate and she passed away 2/1/2016. Yes 2016. We've been to probate court twice, so far. I am so ready for it to be over with! In our case we did not have to probate the house, but the funds. Anyhoo, I had a POA for my grandmother that was several pages long, very detailed. I could make any financial/business, etc. decisions, even selling of property. I never had to get anything different for anyone I dealt with. It was drawn up by an attorney. My sister had her medical POA (she is in the medical field). We've done the same for my dad. Having your name on the bank accounts doesn't mean you get all the money - if you dad has designated other beneficiaries. In our case there is a trust set up for one party and there is also a foundation that is a beneficiary. Legally, I was told I could keep all the money because my name was on the account(s). BUT, the will stated otherwise and of course I want to do what my grandparents (grandfather died first) wanted! If I had kept the money, others could have taken me to court - siting the will (and rightly so). With the POA I had, I was able to sell stock (our financial advisor advised me to do this BEFORE her death) and then re-invest an annuity that cashed out due to her age (she was 98 when she passed). I agree with pinkmountain. Ease the burden now. I never knew how much time settling an estate could take.

Any company which attracts large crowds to hotel ballrooms with any promise of you making money by
a. day trading using specialty software
b. selling "fabulous" products to friends and neighbors
c. investing in real estate with no money down
or
d. wants you to "be your own boss"

is a very good way to part a fool from his money!

Some time ago I was invited by a friend, who "knew that I wanted to help people" to a meeting of a company in the insurance business - then, over 20 years ago, the company name was similar to that of an individual.

Later they sold mutual funds and changed their name to one sounding more corporate - which included letters sounding sort of like the major country in which they do business.

Later yet set up their own mutual fund management subsidiary.

Their proposal was that on a life insurance policy that would sell for about $525., the sales person would make $225, and the six people in his/her upline would make $50. each.

I objected - the person next above might make $50. for a limited time, due to training, etc., but this should reduce after while, and the person next above him/her not make more than $15 - 20. max., while the person next higher (who had a large number of people in his/her downline, not over $5.00 - 10.00, while the person next above that not make over $2.50, as there would be at least scores of people on whose work that person would be making an (should be small amount of) over-ride on each sale.

Not only that - I had two jobs:

Job 1: to sell insurance, and

Job 2: to (recruit) other people to go out to sell insurance, too.

I said that soon half of the people in that city of 20,000 would be selling to the other half!

My opinions went over like lead bricks.

Next meeting - the presenter did not allow questions during the presentation, and people could write down their questions and present them for him to answer.

Multi-level-marketing systems (which seem to change the terminology of how they refer to their tyupe of business fairly frequently, are great ...

... for the first guys in.

One should ask how long the company has been in business 0- they have a tendency to start with a great idea, go great guns for a while, then sort of peter out.

While those skilled in that type of business start another company - of similar style.

The first guys to sign up usually do quite well.

Some time ago, when I joined one where they dealt mainly in soap, the pricing structure was such that I bought somewhat more in one month than I actually had orders for - in order to achieve a much lower price level for the lot.

Then as next month there was no requirement that I buy a minimum amopunt monthly, I bought none.

They said that they were to have no more than 1 wholesale-level person per 5,000 population - to which I replied that that would mean 50 such people in our city of 250,000 or so. They said that they were considering a province-wide basis.

To which I replied that I'd known enough about the Fuller Brush enterprise to know that they, an established company had only 3 in our city - quite a difference.

I was not popular with them, either.

I've been doing tax preparation for 15 years. I've had many clients get into MLMs. Not one has made a penny of income over expenses. All of them dropped it within a year (though often it took them several months to payoff accumulated MLM expenses). All of them have been told lies about what they can claim as business expenses.

I've also had friends call me about joinging MLMs. That's not a pleasant conversation as I'm very vocal on my dislike of MLMs. Infact, most people are not very happy with a friend that tries to rope them into a MLM.

So unless your looking to throw some money away and maybe a friendship skip the MLM. Honestly, you will make much more money working a minimum wage part-time job.
