Leather sofa or Fabric
Comments (7)Any furniture is a product of its environment. If you keep your furniture in direct UV rays leather or fabric it will eventually fade. There are sunscreen products available for leather furniture. Applied to the furniture where the sun is hitting it directly will protect the leather. Its fast, easy and inexpensive to do. I had a leather sofa that I personally used in my sun room for over 20 years and there is no sign of cracking or fading and I never did any more than dust it and if something spilled I used a mild soap and water. My Daughter is now enjoying it in her home and it still looks great at 25. As to Judy G mentioned leather can crack. Two things will cause leather to crack either very dry environments and too much oil. Just as we use lotion to keep our skin soft do the same to your leather furniture every year or so. There are products in the market place that are very effective and easy to apply and endorsed by the tanneries. Be sure to never saturate your leather with oils. Once the oil reaches the suede it has nowhere to go but back to the surface and that will cause hairline cracks over the years. Leather is really maintenance free. That’s a huge part of the beauty. Just dust it! Leather is also a natural product with open pores. These pores allow the hides to constantly take in moisture keeping the leather soft and supple. Just like your leather purse, coat or favorite pair of shoes. Leather will also stay room temperature because of the open pores. If your house it hot or cold so will be your leather furniture. It adapts quickly to your body temperature. The key to a long-lasting relationship with your leather furniture is to first buy the proper leather for your environment. There are leathers today that will work for any climate, just be sure you ask the right questions. There is a market for both fabric and leather and we sell both. My expertise is in knowing everything I can about leather because that is the bulk of our business. I would defiantly consider the Crypton as Judy mentioned. Although my opinion for your life style with the small children and your family and guests eating on your furniture, is still leather because of the ease of cleaning and no odor. There is nothing worse than the smell of spilled milk. I thought I must add Wellington’s is a Women owned and managed company. Any comments made on behalf of Wellington’s are made by women. Comments (10)Yes, it certainly CAN work. The throw that you have over the back of the leather sofa unites the two colors. Maybe try to find pillows that have both the leather sofa and the gray(?) sofa colors in them. Some pics shown HERE. Note the two prints that you have above the gray sofa - Here are more prints, but of stormy beach scenes. Look for fabrics/pillows in those tones. (If you can lower those prints to about 8" above the sofa, they'll look much better.) Stormy ocean prints...See MoreSofa Upholstery: Leather vs. Fabric
Comments (3)Leather usually lasts much longer than fabric. It feels warm in winter and cool in summer. But, leather is not carefree. It should be dusted with a soft cloth every two weeks and the crevices vacuumed. At least once a year apply a good leather conditioner. Blot spilled liquid ASAP. The same is true for grease stains—blot the stain turning the cloth so clean fabric touches the stain. The stain should fade on its own in a short time. Never use soap, detergent, solvents or ammonia. Contact a professional leather cleaner if a stain persists. Ink is another danger for leather. Books, magazines and other printed matter should not be left sitting on leather as transfer can occur and is very difficult to remove. Finally, leather scratches. Small scratches may be buffed out with a chamois or even your fingers, but if you have pets their nails could cause greater damage. Your living room is eclectic, which is fine. Though I wonder if you were trying to match the chair to the color of your wood floor. I like the fabric but think it clashes with the sofa. Treat your floor as a neutral background. You also don't say if you are replacing the sofa or the chair, or are looking to add another chair. I would use a black and white fabric for the chair (or two), so the black of the sofa is mirrored on that side of the room. I like for color to be spread across a room in furniture and accessories. Vice-versa, you could use a brown sofa with the current chair as below. I like fabric for pattern. In my home, which is also eclectic, I have a vintage craftsman style rocker with dark brown leather seat, and the rest of the pieces are upholstered in solid and patterned brown and navy fabrics. My windows only have blinds as well....See Moremixing leather sofa with a fabric sofa
Comments (4)I think pictures would be necessary as advised. However even without pictures I agree that two non-matching sofas isn't ordinarily what is done unless both sofas are deliberately chosen for a specific design effect. However ordinarily they would just look odd and random. Also I question why you need an additional sofa for your seating needs. Most sofas only really seat two people comfortably because no one really wants to sit in the middle seat. You can use two occasional chairs and they would provide comfortable seating AND would look like it was more of a planned design since it is not unusual to have two matching occasional chairs, a sofa AND another "solo" chair that complements and ties together the other choices....See Morebumble_doodle
