Help me with Sofas(Leather vs Fabric??)
Comments (21)I have always had fabric sofas then about 6 years ago I bought a slipcovered sofa from Arhaus. I thought it was a good investment because I could have new covers made and when we decided to have kids I figured I could wash the covers. Well.....a few years later we had twins, then had our third before the twins turned 2 and by that time I was fed up with the maintenance of the fabric. So, one day I was so frustrated at the constant cleaning, I went to the furniture store and bought a leather sofa and loveseat. They look fabulous and for the first year I loved how easy it was to clean them and the worry free attitude I could have with 3 toddlers. Now I have had them for about 2.5 years and I am counting the days until I can have a cozy, fabric sofa again. I still have the Arhaus sofa, but it is too large to move into our current space, so it sits in the kids playroom in the basement (figures, right?). My husband has relented that I could buy a new fabric sofa, but everytime I look at them, all I can think about is the spilled milk, dropped food that got snuck into the family room, runny noses that got wiped on the seat cushions.....so, I leave the store longing for a fabric sofa but appreciating the leather and the fact it always looks good, no matter what. As a matter of fact, my SIL thought the leather was such a good idea after seeing mine and also having 3 small children, she bought the exact same set. We feel the same way about leather and fabric. Function won out over personal preference. BTW, I have leather on carpet and plan to add a nice area rug to help add some color the room....See MoreBest pillow fabrics for leather sofa?
Comments (7)Wow! Thanks for all the ideas! I'm going to print these out and keep them with me for the next time I'm shopping! The ones we have now are satiny and not working well at all. Appreciate all of your input! :)...See MoreLeather or fabric couch? Which is easier to clean & protect from pets?
Comments (4)Leather is easier to maintain than fabric. The problem is all the sweat/drool/other biological fluids, hair, fur, skin flakes, food particles that are going to get on the couch surface. With fabric, they will seep through and/or become trapped in the fabric fibers. Unless you can completely remove the fabric cover, your fabric will eventually smell and look gross. Spot cleaners (e.g., Bissell) will work to remove stains but they’re not for deep cleaning. Leather is easy to wipe clean. I do a weekly wipe with a rag moistened with soapy water, then wipe with a rag moistened with clean water (repeat several times). Leather conditioning is necessary if u want the leather to look good for a long time. An alternative is polyurethane/vinyl/etc. (leather look, if u prefer). That’s cheaper than leather and waterproof so it’s much easier to keep clean. You can have a go on it with soap/detergent (but don’t pour water on it. The seams are not waterproof.)...See MoreSofa Upholstery: Leather vs. Fabric
Comments (3)Leather usually lasts much longer than fabric. It feels warm in winter and cool in summer. But, leather is not carefree. It should be dusted with a soft cloth every two weeks and the crevices vacuumed. At least once a year apply a good leather conditioner. Blot spilled liquid ASAP. The same is true for grease stains—blot the stain turning the cloth so clean fabric touches the stain. The stain should fade on its own in a short time. Never use soap, detergent, solvents or ammonia. Contact a professional leather cleaner if a stain persists. Ink is another danger for leather. Books, magazines and other printed matter should not be left sitting on leather as transfer can occur and is very difficult to remove. Finally, leather scratches. Small scratches may be buffed out with a chamois or even your fingers, but if you have pets their nails could cause greater damage. Your living room is eclectic, which is fine. Though I wonder if you were trying to match the chair to the color of your wood floor. I like the fabric but think it clashes with the sofa. Treat your floor as a neutral background. You also don't say if you are replacing the sofa or the chair, or are looking to add another chair. I would use a black and white fabric for the chair (or two), so the black of the sofa is mirrored on that side of the room. I like for color to be spread across a room in furniture and accessories. Vice-versa, you could use a brown sofa with the current chair as below. I like fabric for pattern. In my home, which is also eclectic, I have a vintage craftsman style rocker with dark brown leather seat, and the rest of the pieces are upholstered in solid and patterned brown and navy fabrics. My windows only have blinds as well....See MoreRelated Professionals
