Electric fireplaces?

Our den is always chilly in the winter,and we were thinking of putting in an electric fireplace to warm it up a bit.

(Only option ,due to layout of house)

I find that we are having to turn up our thermostat to keep this room heated,although the rest of the house is way too warm.

My question is,how energy efficent are those fireplaces?

Don't want to end up with it costing us more than running the furnace.

Does anyone have one,and how much did it affect your electric bills?

I hope you get an answer..I am wanting one as well..I have a fireplace but want to add the electric insert..my room is very chilly too.

electric fireplace heaters use resistance heat, they are 100% efficient as are all electric space heaters. yes, your electric bills will go up quite a bit (depending of course on how much the heater will be used); while electric resistance heat is 100% efficient, electricity is generally an expensive form of energy to use, and using it to heat will reflect that.

Yes! I ordered a fireplace insert thing that uses STEAM -- and we couldn't have chosen better. Don't remember the name, but we ordered it from Target. When the steam comes out it looks exactly like smoke. There are fake logs and orange lighting and we love it!. I decided that we really didn't need to see both sides of the fire at once, so I made black curtains to hang on the back side, making the two sided look (from the front) like a one sided. We just ignore the back side and it looks great.

Great inspiration photo. We are about to finish a basement. Originally wanted to do a vented gas fireplace but not able to with layout and cumbersome venting to outside. Few questions if you don’t mind. How do you like the electric fireplace? What kind is it? Do you use it for secondary heat in basement and if so, how does it do heating your space? We are looking to do something extremely similar to your design / bump out.

One tending modern impactful idea would be chevron, not herringbone, tiles covering the whole wall. Any stone like quartzite, marble, soapstone or porcelain tile in a concrete appearance or shiplap cut to chevron pattern.
