so, what is the best way to clean hardwood floors?

I have tried moping, swiffers, vacuuming and normally just get down on my hands and knees with a damp cloth and some hardwood floor cleaner/and or refinisher. My knees are telling me that here has to be a better way!! Any suggestions?

Check ACE Hardware in your area. They should carry a brand of cleaner called BONA. My local store also carries the microfiber mop head/handle that goes with their cleaner system. Go to bonakemi.com for more info.

I always swiffer first to get up any dirt and debris, and then use Bona to wash it. Makes it nice and clean and shiny. I bought the cleaning product and the mop on their online store.

When cleaning, I just turn on all the lights (so I can see the light hitting any dirty spots) and hit any special dirty spots with the spray a few minutes before cleaning (so it can soak). Then I spray a 4 foot square and mop it up, spray a 4 foot square and mop, and so on. The dirty "stuck-on" places that I had previously sprayed come up easily -- no bending, scrubbing, or effort required.

I had the same problem when we had our floors all sanded and finished with polyurethane. Even though we hung sheets between the rooms, dust got on everything. Use a slightly damp rag and change the cloth frequently. It will be a lot of work. But it will look great when you're done.

It helps to take a small piece of wood ( an old shingle or piece of a 2 x 4) and put it under whatever you are using to pry up the strip. I used one of DH's expensive wood chisels to pry up the tack strip. It worked really well, but probably wasn't very good for the chisel.

Just finished cleaning the kitchen floor (on my hands and knees). I need to correct my ratio posted above. I used a couple tablespoons of white vinegar to 2 quarts of water. Did a section at a time with a well rung cloth followed immediately by drying with a soft towel. I've been doing this for the past eight years. The floors have a satin finish, so they have a slight shine. That has not changed. There are scratches from the cats' claws (even though I keep them trimmed), but that's part of the patina. #1 rule: No outside shoes in the house. This cuts down tremendously on the need to clean the floor, any floor. I use this dry mop, it is fantastic for picking up dust and pet hair. It isn't good at picking up debris, though -- this is really only a problem in my kitchen, and not that much of a problem, so I use a canister vac with bare floor head (no beater bar) if I need to. If I need to actually wash the floors, which is not very often since there's no gunk being brought in from outside - it's usually just paw prints, I spray lightly with water and use the pad designed for damp mopping on the above mop. Or a very dilute solution of vinegar and water (1 Tbls vinegar in 20 ounces water, with a couple drops of essential oil to scent) if I feel I need to. No damage to the floors. Remember you're cleaning the polyurethane coating, not the actual wood.
