Here is the "latest News". $190 million facility to begin production in 2012 On Wednesday, December 15, 2010, Electrolux, announced that it has selected Memphis, TN, as the location of its new North American Cooking Products manufacturing center. Electrolux plans to begin transitioning production to the newly built, 700,000 square foot facility in mid-2012 and the process is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2013. The new facility will assume the manufacturing currently located in L�Assomption, Quebec, the wind-down of which Electrolux announced on December 14th. The plant will build the company�s Electrolux �, Electrolux ICON � and Frigidaire � built-in and specialty cooking products. These include: Drop-in/Slide-in Ranges, Wall Ovens, Specialty Freestanding Ranges, and Cooktops. So yes, It will be 2013 before the transistion is "Complete", but jobs in Memphis should start appearing in about 6 months. I think it's great more jobs (courtesy of the Swedes) are coming to the US, rather than leaving! I still feel guilty about helping a huge "Well known" faucet maker move to Mexico, My employees and I had to move the equipment from their old facility in California and set up in the new lab in Mexico!!!---but I guess if I didn't somebody else would have---what really bugs me is the price of their faucets didnt even drop a penny after the move GRRRRRR GRRReeeeddddd!!! The shop we took it to said "that's just the way Dodge makes them." After 40,000 you will need to replace it. Sounds to me like a ripoff shop. I have a Dodge with 200,000 miles on it. The rear end hasn't been touched. A friend put 130,000 on hers, gave it to her brother and it's over 300,000 miles. Another friend has a Dodge with 140,000, wanted a new vehicle, traded it and has 100,000 on it. Perhaps "that's just the way Dodge makes them."? You may have gotten a defective one. You may not have maintained it. I don't know. But to condemn everything because you were disappointed by one vehicle, well, the FGs will censor me if I say what should be said. And FWIW, my limited experience with Sylvania bulbs has been positive. I haven't read, seen or heard anything that supports that comment either. There's a DIY store in the midwest called Menard's and I suppose about once a year they have a "Made in America" sale. They list the items and where they're made. I kind of like that. I don't remember when the sale is, but I'm guessing it probably is around the 4th of July.

Since your family is from a different culture, I suspect you will be given wide lattitute and not be expected to behave as if you were Japanese. I would suggest reading up on Japanese customs and wedding traditions so you know what they are -- but not necessarily trying to follow all of them. Ask your DIL-to-be and her mother for advice, and defer to as much of it as you comfortably can, diplomatically explaining your reasons for those customs you can not embrace. For example, the offer to rent kimono is generous and kind, but there are many traditions that go along with wearing kimono, and you may inadvertently do something offensive or foolish that would not stand out or offend if you were dressed in Western dress. Obscure (to Americans) things like wrapping right over left or the proper number of layers of undergarments. Also, you both would probably need to be 'professionally dressed' for the event, which may be uncomfortable for you. Giving money as a wedding gift is a widespread tradition among Asian (and many other) cultures, and one you should probably not try to erradicate. You don't need to participate, as presumably, your cultural traditions will be given similar respect. You might also ask to include a select few American traditions -- perhaps throwing rice, stomping a wine glass or tossing a bouquet? Maybe mention the possibility to the bride, explain the reasons for the tradition -- but be prepared to acquiesse graciously if they're not particularly important to you. As for your expected financial contribution, if you can't find the information online, perhaps the Japanese Studies department at a university could help you. Or a library? Or a friend of Japanese descent? Or ask your son to ask the bride to be. Some direct questions can be embarassing, but surely far less so than doing the wrong thing. Your FDIL will want you to make a good impression on her parents, and should be willing to be "uncomfortably frank" to make this happen. Gift-giving is a very important ritual in Japan, and the gifts to and from the wedding couple would be, I imagine, rather MORE important than most other types of gifts. If there's one area where I'd be especially reluctant to break with Japanese tradition, this would probably be it. Get the 'low down' from your FDIL and her parents and explain to the American guests how it works so they will know what to expect and also not feel/appear foolish and ill-bred.

Do you need a tumbler composter? If you live in the city or suburbs and rats or racoons would love nothing more than to treat your compost pile as their personal smorgasbord, then the answer may be yes. Tumblers get the food waste off the ground and inside a bin critters can't unlock or gnaw their way in to . Not to mention it keeps the neighbors from complaining about that pile of gunk in your backyard. Another reason to get a tumbler is if you have no yard to speak of. You can compost on top of concrete or asphalt if you need to. However, know this: to get good results with a tumbler you are going to have to spend a lot of money. There are cheap ones - $100 or less - but they are poorly made and not big enough to get the compost heating up. (You need a mass of 3' by 3' at the very least, and bigger is better.) To get something that will last more than a year and is big enough to generate some heat you are going to pay over $300. The Jora JK270 (above) fits that bill. It is $450. It is built to last 10 years, it is insulated so you can compost through the winter, the latches are secure and it turns easily. But the cost brings me to two conclusions. First of all, if you don't need a tumbler and can compost in a pile or a simple plastic bin, then by all means you should do that. There is no sense in spending that much money when there are alternatives that are free or cheap and will work as well or better than a tumbler. And second, even if a good tumbler fits your requirements, is it worth $450 to produce your own compost? I mean you can buy an awful lot of bags compost at the garden center for that much money. Maybe you shouldn't be composting at all if it takes that much resources to do it. Now if its your hobby and you have the money, then go for it, I say. Live the dream. Just weigh the costs and the benefits.
