Sofa leather vs fabric (both high-end)

Anyone have opinions regarding leather vs fabric? I am looking at purchasing either an H&M leather sofa/tilt chair/ottoman or a Highland House sofa/chair/ottoman in a fabric from our local fine furniture store. Our salesperson told me that the frames were nearly identical and the only difference was the leather vs. fabric. Both seem really comfortable and I was told the frames & 8 way hand-tied springs would last "forever". The hangup of course is the cost difference of about $2000. I know the leather will last longer, but is it enough to justify the extra cost. Does installing new fabric on a couch 15 yrs from now negate the cost difference? Another factor is that I have two young children, ages 6 and 1, and should I be leaning one way over another because of them? Am I crazy for looking at these nicer furniture lines with 2 young children? I've considered buying something like a Flexsteel now, getting 10yrs out of it hopefully, and then upgrading once the kids are grown.

I really appreciate all opinions/advice or any similar experiences you can share. Thank you.

Recovering in a decent grade of fabric is expensive, so you want to plan to avoid that if possible. In the Northern VA area, a sofa upholstery job runs about $ 600 and its going to take 20 yards of fabric (skirted, under 16" pattern match) at $ 45 a yard average. So that's nearly $ 1,500 in our part of the world. A Tilt back chair would take 8 -9 yards and be $ 350 to $ 400.

Leather outlasts Fabric at a 4 to 1 ratio.

In motion furniture, fabric wears faster due to friction and typically higher use rates. Its not unusual to see a motion piece showing significant wear in about 7 years.

Leather is easier to clean in the Finished grades (or pigmented leather), it literally wipe and go. Do you have a car with leather interior? If so, you know how easy that is to clean up vs. one with a cloth interior.

As for the cost difference, its really where your comfort zone might be. My kids all grew up on leather and we still use the same pieces daily.

What about a microfiber? We have a family of 9 with seven children and we put hard usage on our furniture. I'm hoping that with the youngest being 8, we can now put the This End Up (most uncomfortable furniture!) in the basement and get some comfy pieces for our family room. I found a Bradington and Young leather sectional floor sample for $3k at a lovely furniture store in downtown Baltimore - Shofer's. The salesperson is wonderful. Since it's all high end or almost high end, the prices are the same. If I had an unlimited budget, I'd get the Austin high back sectional, but reality is the $3k is more our budget. I'm concerned about the leather comfort - we lie on our sofas to watch movies or snuggle up with a good book. I'm thinking microfiber is best for durability/cleanability and comfort. But...is it still a 1 in your 4:1 ratio? Thanks! Hope you are open tomorrow. I want to visit your store!

Oh, I should also say that we really like the Lee Industries deep seat sectional, but that comes in at $4300, but does have at least one extra seat than the Bradington & Young leather sectional. So confused here!

We purchased a Jetton sofa and loveseat a couple of years ago (after I read John's recommendation). Overall we have been pleased but the pieces required rework for (1)a small bulge in the fabric on the lovesear due to a poor trim job - done on site (2)two pieces of fabric used for the rear of the sofa which resulted in a pattern mismatch - factory finally replaced with a single swatch (3) a noticeable gather on one sofa back due to tension in the fabric - this required two trips to the factory to fix. It took 3 trips back to fix because both the dealer and the manufacturer did not fully inspect the pieces before sending them back. I had to finally talk to the owner(s) and to their credit they did address my problems. I like the construction techniques used. One curious fact is that the dealer did not advertise the brand in their store. Although the wood furniture had the brand name prominently displayed, for the Jetton line, you didn't find out who made them till you asked. (I had owned Jetton before)

Naturally I would suggest leather being a better choice not only for comfort but longevity. You will find with use, leather takes on a slight patina adding to its beauty. Leather will remain room temperature until you sit down and then the natural pores adjust to your body temperature. Leather is a natural product and stays soft & supple from constantly taking moisture out of the air like a sponge. Top grain genuine premium cowhide will be your best bet to last decades and stand up to children and pets. Leather is best for people that suffer from allergies because leather does not hold odor or pet hair and spills are just wiped up. We already know the durability of leather because we use it on our best shoes, coats, bags and saddles. Leather furniture comes in hundreds of colors and in a wide variety of styles that range from the traditional classics to today’s more modern designer looks. There are now leathers on the market with lots of character that resemble a piece of granite. These types of leathers need no accessorizing while a solid color may call for throw pillows to be added for additional interest. Someone in this thread mentioned leather being slippery. Yes, if you buy leather that has a high gloss or heavy patina to the finish it will be slippery and slick. Most leathers however, are softer and almost feel like they are embracing you. Leather is a great investment. Will last for decades with very little care and makes a statement in any room it is added. Naturally there will be differences of opinions about this topic so this is my two sense to the conversation. I feel leather and fabric can complement each other if done right.

I found this thread because I just got off the phone with my wife who informed me that replacement slings for our set of six Telescope chairs will be $780.00! That is a very tough pill to swallow, and like many here we weighed this heavily against just getting a cheaper set from HD, Costco, or any number of stores. Our set is about 10 years old to date (purchased summer of 2010) and the aluminum frames, table, and umbrella have held up extremely well (we do store them inside for winter though). Ultimately, I decided to stick with these and pay the exorbitant price for a few reasons: - The rest of the set is extremely high quality. I feel good each year when I pull it out of storage - heavy duty powder coated aluminum construction that has lasted well and still looks 9/10 after a spring wipe-down. - It does bother me how much importation has changed - pushing us toward a throw-away-away-and-buy-another culture. I do feel like we enjoy additional quality on these American made items (not always the case). - Less and less stuff is American made any more. As an engineer and a maker, I miss the days when we made most of the best stuff here. This set still exemplifies that quality. It's a little thing, but something I rarely get to enjoy these days. - After 10 years, with very little degradation (other than the fabric slings), I know what to expect from this set, and feel confident that they will last another 10 years easily with new fabric. The convenience of going 10-12 years between having to think about this, or take a gamble on something potentially less durable is worth something to me. Surely, I'll be feeling the sting of this bill in about a month (so good thing I'm writing this now!), but I thought I'd share what tipped us to reinvesting in this very expensive set. Mrykbee and pandtkendall, thank you for your replies. That's great you found what you wanted on Craig's List. Nothing better than getting what you like at a price you like. Pandtkendall that's great you enjoy your HM sofa and enjoyed working with Duane. Here's to many, many years of enjoyment. I am comfortable buying furniture from a distant company. Thanks for mentioning Duane. I will look him up. I'd love to travel to his store in the near future. I bought a Classic Leather sofa and recliner in 1987 from a company in Southern Pines owned by two fantastic brothers Miller and Cliff Barnes. I never met them and did everything over the phone The furniture has seen heavy use and three large dogs over the years. I love the leather but I'm tired of the style. The sofa still looks good but the recliner is aging. My husband and I used to sit in the recliner together and then our 90 pound dog would climb up on our laps. I took care of the furniture and faithfully cleaned it and moved the cushions around. Maybe around ten years or so I had new insides made for the cushions. The sofa sits right in front of a big window with lots of light. There isn't any sun damage. At some point I tried to kill the furniture using 409 or water and vinegar to clean it but didn't die. (Not cleaning products I'd ever suggest). I have no idea what type of leather but it's soft and indestructible. I realize today's leather will not be as good as the older leather we have but we want our next set to also be leather. Again, thanks for getting back to me..

A B-Y sectional on the floor in real leather at $ 3K is a deal and a half. BUY IT. This should be 2x that price. Its not from their Seven Seas (made in China) collection, is it? If so, that would explain the low price.

Microfibers are tough, but even 100 % polyester can't begin to approach the lifespan of leather hides. And leather is the best for cleanup, too!
