The third egg hatched Sunday morning. The experts warn that the third one has a poor chance of survival because the older ones will try to fight it for food. I think the parents should have a good supply of food for them, though, because the section of the river the nest is over is a salmon spawning area, and there are plenty of dead salmon in the shallow areas. Did any of you watch yesterday (Saturday)? The cars on the highway closest to the nest are traveling west over the Sacramento River Bridge. I noticed the cars traveling east were backed up and just creeping along. I figured there had been a fender-bender on one of the on-ramps. But according to the paper today, three men in a canoe were traveling south in the river and the canoe flipped. The CHP helicopter (CA Hwy Patrol) pulled them out of the river with ropes. All three are fine. But the cars were slowing to watch the rescue. Sheesh!

George, that is one lucky kitten! You and your family always seem to come to the rescue of wounded or lost animals.... I think it's great; for you guys AND them! You live in a land of great adventure---it might be harsh at times, but it sounds like a place where there isn't a lot of room for second-guessing. You just do the job and hope you get it right. I've come to believe that a kitten having been within the shadow of death, if saved from its grip, will bounce back with a greater zest for life than others with no life-threatening horrors to report. Little Be-Be Kitten is living proof---she almost died at a very young age, after losing all of her sibs within a 24 hr. period---they were part of a feral group and I'm sure someone put out poison--- She's now about 6 yrs. old and rules the roost, in spite of being smaller than all the other Owners-Of-Me at my house. She is relentless when she wants something, no matter how many strings of battle cries are yelled at her in a fog of half sleep. I adore her the rest of the time. Make no mistake, any hawk or owl will gladly make a meal of a cat, whether large or small. If I hear Crows or Jays screeching, it's usually the Red-Tail right out back in an Oak, checking out the scene. Furry bodies with tails twitching, stomp all around the door area, all ticked off at me if they have to stay in 'til he goes..... (I've had to stop putting out birdseed except on snowy days, because of him.) Anyhow, I hope the kitten has a long and exciting life ahead of him while living with your family!

But I did rake up the leaves on her property next to mine where we share a mutual irrigation ditch plus all the wonderful rotting maple leaves in the ditch. I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. Also, the next door neighbor that I took some newspaper from her bin comes over to where I'm adding to the compost bin and I'm in my pj's, coat and NEW BLUE RUBBER BOOTS and asks, "What do I have there?" I told her what I was up to and told her I was raking up the leaves in the ditch, clearing up the grass, etc. She said I could have all the leaves I want and I asked about the newspaper and she said she'll just leave the bin by my compost bin. LOL Not quite the garbage bag full of Starbuck's coffee grounds, but I'm sure it will make a nice tea! BTW, most places have appropriate sized buckets so pick-ups can be done at the same time, yet I still have full buckets to pick-up, and I am not taking up extra space under their counter. (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!) My nerves would be shot if I left my cats outside. If one didn't come home, I'd be worried to death and have to search the town till I found it. Of my 15 cats, only the first one was allowed out and that changed too. He was a Siamese and we lived in the country then for a brief time. Then we moved to the suburbs but lived on a dead end street. One day Simon went missing and was gone for two days. He finally returned and we figured he got locked in someone's garage. Then he got into a catfight and we didn't realize it until he got very sluggish. We parted his fur and saw a wound that had become infected. Off to the vet, antibiotics, and he was homebound the rest of his life which was 20 years. Loved that cat and so did my kids. My daughter has his twin (female though) and a larger lighter male, her brother. Of course, they are strictly inside too.
