Our brand new W.Shillig - What a disappointment!!!

After 2-3 months of research, we decided to spend $4500 on a sectional made by W.Shillig. Many people here on this forum were happy with their pieces. We are not as fortunate. A few days after the delivery, we discovered so many problems with the sectional. The corner piece has a large hole, missing and torn stitches, and water stains. Other 2 connecting pieces have exposed plywood frames between the armrests/backrests and the seat cushions.

The store offered to send a leather repair company over. We declined and pushed for a brand new replacement. They agreed but we are thinking of canceling the order and forget about W.Shillig. We are now unsure about their QA process in China.

Anyway, just wanted to share our experiences and disappointments.

I'm so sorry for your troubles. Did you also contact Shillig? I was lucky with mine.

No, we did not contact Schillig. Unless they can send us a replacement that's made in Germany, we cannot see what else they can do. I'm so happy for you.

Electrolux sent me a new metal panel by Fedex Next Day. I needed the metal panel on which the knobs were located.The authorized tech will come and install it in a few days. Covered by warranty. They didn't ask many questions. Incidentally, when the panel did not arrive last week when scheduled, I called them and they reordered it saying there must have been some confusion. I received it last week. But, to my surprise, two days ago, I got a second package with the electronic wave touch control panel that is located on the top of the range (albeit with a small plastic tab broken off in transit I suppose). They must have misunderstood the part I wanted the second time. So, in case my electronics ever get fried I now have a free spare. I just have to glue the broken tab back on. Go Electrolux!

My Disappointing New KA Stand Mixer

I bought my wife the 5.5Qt lift bowl model number "KV25mexer5" from Costco. It has all steel gears. I got when they had basically 2 sales on it at same time. $50 off from KA and $30 off from Costco so we paid $249.00 total. For $250 it is probably the best choice you can find for a mixer, we have not had any problems with ours after 5 months of use so far. Hasn't had any problem making a 3 cup batch of bread dough using the dough hook and on speed 2 like it says to do. So far for us and especially for the price it was the best deal for our needs. It is loud but so is every other mixer in this power range. It seems rather solid, no grinding, everything works smoothly. I seriously looked at the Bosch Universal which is definitely a better mixer especially if you make a lot of large 6+ cup dough batches. But for the one I would buy (stainless bowl with blender) is $550 on sale. So more than double the price. For how much we use a mixer this Costco KA was our best deal by far, plus the added perk of if anything happens to it the first year or maybe even longer we could just take it right back for a full refund or replacement with no hassles. IF you use the hell out of a mixer though I would pay the extra and get the Bosch Universal. As far as where the KA "Stand Mixers" are made they are actually made in Greenville OH. The KA hand mixers are however made in China. But like most everything else made in China it is made there under the exact specifications that the American Company wants, unfortunately that happens to be cheap as humanly possible which is why they are made there. IF the American company stated we want the best possible mixer you can make and stated exactly what they wanted, what materials to use etc that is exactly what they would get from China. So while everyone continually puts the blame on China it really has next to nothing to do with them. It is the American company that purposely wants crap at the cheapest price possible.

Thank you so much for your response! I am so happy to know now what to do! Thompson's says we have to wait a week to prime, so we'll go out next weekend and get the paint products you suggested. May I ask one last question? I promise not to be a further bother. Will the cedar oil come out through the sealer, paint and primer, or is that going to be a non issue going forward? This is an old thread but maybe I can help. I'm a ABO certified optician with over 25 years of experience and I work for a group private optometrist practice. First, I think there are good and bad optometrists out there but I disagree that you will get a better refraction(that's the part where they do the eyeglass/contact prescriptions ) from a medical doctor. Most MDs have techs do the refraction and they just check it, optometrists do the refraction themselves. You can get a good or bad refraction from either. And even the best doctors will sometimes have to redo a rx. Secondly, there are hundreds of progressives! Some people can wear almost any of them if properly fit but some people are pickier. The newer designs are usually better with less blur on the sides and larger areas. People with + corrections in the distance often have more issues- it's the nature of their prescription. Some good brands are Varilux, Shamir, Zeiss, and Hoya. But all these brands make a range of progressives from average to great. Varilux recently came out with a new progressive that they worked on for 5 years called the Varilux X that seems to have a superior reading and intermediate/arms length area while still having a good distance area. You can find it at private doctors offices and private opticals. Proper fitting is is extremely important with progressives. Opticians can remark the lenses and make sure that they are placed correctly- there are laser marks on the lenses for this purpose. If you have an issue with your glasses insist on this being done. The fitting cross should go right over the pupil. I think a lot of issues people have with progressives are with poor fit. Just understanding how to use them is important, too. With a computer monitor lower is better. Remember that straight ahead vision will be distance so if your monitor is straight ahead you will probably have to raise your head to see it. Some people need a separate pair of computer/work space glasses if they work at this distance a lot and can't lower the monitor. Walking- the lower portion of the lens is for near so if you need to look at your feet you need to use the upper area of the lenses. Make sure that your glasses tilt in at the bottom enough. If they are too far out at the bottom it can make walking harder. Sorry this got so long. I am very passionate about my job and helping people see and look better! I'm happy to answer any questions.

Ours (made in their factory in China) had some issues on delivery (which I wrote about on a few threads), but nothing to the extent that yours had. I am so sorry yours arrived in such poor shape.

We initially pushed for a replacement, but the company would not authorize it (a Schillig rep came to our home with the store owner to see the couch). We could have returned the couch to the store, but allowed them to try to repair/replace the problems since we really liked the couch/style and wanted to make this work.

The leather specialist the store sent out did a very good job, to our pleasant surprise. Some of the packing creases did smooth out over time as well, and the cushions/fill do seem a bit more resilient than they did initially. It did take longer than expected to receive replacements for the chipped feet, and they are slightly smaller (and a different finish) than the originals, but they look fine, and aren't really visible (unless you lie on the floor and look under the couch). Overall, the repairs were done pretty much to our satisfaction, and we are very happy with our couch.

If the style/model you got isn't made in Germany, I doubt they can send a replacement (of the same model). If they only make that model in China, they aren't likely to make it for you in Germany. I don't know if they'll allow you to choose a different model--one made in Germany, but it's certainly worth inquiring.

You might want to try contacting W. Schillig in NC directly.

Thank you. After spending 3-4 months researching, we were so exhausted and did not want to deal with either W. Schillig or the store anymore. We returned the sofa and received the full refund. The store manager apologetically told us that this was an isolated incident. Whatever it was, they no longer have our confidence.

Anyway, just received our new sectional made by Gamma International (http://www.gamma-international.it/index.php?option=com_ponygallery&func=viewcategory&catid=19&startpage=7&Itemid=86#category). We are extremely happy with the design, quality and the craftsmanship. Maybe it was a good thing that we received the defective piece in the first place.
