Anyone Have Experience with White Marble Fireplace?
Comments (11)I have two carved (solid) white marble fireplaces. One is completely unsealed and the other has a sealer that was done by the installer. I'm not sure what kind. The sealed one has gotten stained on the hearth, which is not a raised one. The stains look like pitch or tar-brownish. I suppose a marble restorer could do something to mitigate them, but they would reappear with future fires. The marks are concealed by the fire screen, which I keep in place to prevent flying sparks. They don't really bother me because we actually use the fireplaces for heat in the winter and I think they look better when actually used. However, I'm not sure whether the sealer makes the staining more or less likely. The unsealed marble fireplace has no stains. We also have a raw stone fireplace. It has more stains than either of the smooth marble ones. In my old house, I had three gas marble tile fireplaces. I converted the fireplaces to gas logs specifically because I was worried that the grout lines would look bad if ashes ever got into them. So, I never made real wood fires with a marble tile fireplace. If you are meticulous about building your fires far back into the fireplace, and about cleaning out ashes, you'll probably be okay. However, if guests or house cleaners or the otherwise uninitiated smear ashes, it would be difficult to get the grout to look like new....See MoreAnyone have experience or thoughts on the Kohler DTV?
Comments (18)I’ve had the DTV+ system for 4 years. I have 2 touch screens (1 outside and 1 inside the shower). I have a shower head, 3 body sprays, 1 hand sprayer, the overhead kohler rainfall with the color LEDs and the amplifier unit. Overall, the basic system itself works well. The touch screens are a bit sketchy at times, but you get used to them and learn their nuance. I also have the kohler konnect module. If I were to do it over, I would stay clear of the konnect module and the kohler music amplifier. The konnect rarely works and integration is very limited (ie no real connectivity to smarthings or IFTTT). The music amplifier was replaced multiple times and always gave a humming feedback when powered off. I ultimately disconnected the amp completely from the kohler unit and now run my speakers through a Sonos amp and use a brilliant switch touch screen to control the music separately. We rarely use the overhead rain panel but we do use the lights every day. The valves are reliable but be prepared to not be able to shower with a power outage. We have 3 other baths, so not a deal breaker. The other valve issue is that they can occasionally fail (mineral buildup likely) and require complete disassembly of the valve to replace the valve with what kohler calls a “repair kit”. The kits is about $100 and takes about an hour or so if you’re handy to do. I’ve had 2 fail so far in 4 years. We do have hard water so that may be the issue. Would I do it over again? Probably so, I’m a tech geek so I’m willing to deal with some of these issues. If you want a solid system that’s going to last a few decades like a regular faucet and valve and requires little to No maintenance or tech skills, don’t install this....See MoreDoes anyone have experience with Sarto doors? I have a mid century mod
Comments (5)We have a set of Sartodoor double barn boors and a set of matching french doors from United Porte. They look gorgeous and go up pretty straight forward. However, the vinyl wrapping on one of the doors is bubbling/separating from the wood and the other came with the vinyl cracked/torn in an area. While they are sending us new doors, it still makes me wonder about the longevity of them. We also got the silk white color and while it is very clean looking and silky, they get dirty from the slightest touch of even a 'clean' hand. Further, they're not paintable, according to Sartodoor so we're stuck with cleaning them as much as we can but some dirt smudges are pretty much permenent; like pencil marks from measurements during install. Some of those pencil marks got worked into the pores of the vinyl and are permanent stains now. The door frame and trim is also vinyl wrapped and not paintable. So, screw and nail holes aren't really able to be caulked because the caulk turns yellow and dingy when not painted and the vinyl isn't paintable. We did paint a section of the inner door jamb where some sharpy marks and extra holes where made after mis measuring hinge screw holes. With Kilz, the vinyl did take some Behr trim paint. However, it is easily scratched off with your fingernail. Fortunately, the painted section is high and in the jamb where it's not touched. Don't get me wrong, they're great doors especially for the price. But if given the choice again, I'd go with something paintable, not vinyl wrapped....See MoreIsokern/Earthcore
Comments (0)We live in Whistler, BC and recently had a Supreme/Ambiance Fireplace installed. The key selling point was a firescreen door so the unit could operate like a fireplace. The screen door is not functional, and has not been sufficiently tested by Ambiance. The unit needs a glass door with a tight seal to work, and we would have never purchased this unit had this been clear. With the screen door, smoke pours into our house when we lite a fire and after troubleshooting several configurations with the installer we have concluded it needs to be replaced. Does anyone have experience with Isokern/Earthcore for wood burning fireplaces. We are looking at that as an option in addition to fixed inserts. Thanks!...See Moreazdreamhome
