Veneer Stone

Has anyone used stone veneer on their fireplace? We're in the process of doing an addition and a fireplace store we went to mentioned it and their sample looked pretty nice so thought I would look into it. From what they said, it's also cheaper than actually stoning up the whole length of the wall (cathedral ceilings). Thanks!

Strange that this has got no responses...

Perhaps its because we're a little unclear on just what you are asking: Do you mean a cement stone veneer, like El Dorado stone, or Cultured Stone from Owens Corning? If so, the vast majority of new stone fireplaces are made of this stuff: Cost is a little higher than real stone, but you supposedly save a lot on instalation, and since it weighs less, there are fewer structural issues to address.

Our fireplace has the "reverse bump" oruboris mentioned in the other thread you started. We are putting a 1 - 1 1/2" stone veneer made of limestone on it. It's the real stone, however, just thinner. Like Oruboris said, it's a bit more expensive (I have 800 SF total, including my outside tower, fireplace, solid limestone hearth, and 4 col. in my front yard, approximate cost $5900) the labor to do all of this is around $6000. I live in So.Cal. The pieces come in flats and linear, you'll use the linears when you bump out the fireplace on all of the edges. The linear pieces cost about twice as much as the flats. We haven't installed it yet, but will post pictures when we do. Hope this helps.

Are those cultured stone? They look good enough to not hit my faux stone button. :) There may be a stigma associated with fake stone, but not the veneer stuff that is real stone. I'm a brick person, I'm a stone person. And there is certainly ugly brick out there. Yours might not be as nice in person as it looks in the photo but from here it looks like the good stuff, well laid out, in nice colors. A deep foresty or blackish green trim might blend the brick with roof colors, especially if you go with a darker grey. Some roof colors are off-limits in some climates of course... Brick is good with your house because it's such a classic style, the horizontal brick contrasting with the pointy gothic peak. It's just a very pleasing pattern, and if you do stone, I'd prefer it in your first two styles. But really, even they are almost too natural and unstructured. They'd be okay, but I personally would direct my efforts at something else. Okay, cuz I like it. But we really need a wide shot from the street that shows more of the front of the house I think! As far as I know, you have a stone garage or pagoda wing or something. That might change my feelings about the brick. When I was trying to pick out a trim color for a brick/stucco/wood trim house, I sort of enjoyed looking at the "historically appropriate" colors from the local historic commission.

Thank you Yardvaark and Revolutionary Gardens for the feedback! So I went to the supplier and found out the product is black basalt 24"x36" x 3/4" thick, thermal face and sawn edges...not manufactured stone as I had previously thought. Yes I used the big wet sploot method Revolutionary Gardens mentions, and did not use a mold but sculpted up edges of the concrete around the sides of the stones to retain them as best I could. The mixture was roughly 1 part cement/5 parts sand/5 parts water but I was mostly eyeballing it to get the consistency I thought I needed. The small cracks I believe are actually not cracks but a function of the natural stone having veins that are visible when wet, as I havent sealed the stone yet and its absorbing water. My next task is to clean off the dried cement stains from the top face of each stone and will be applying Aqua Mix enhancer (I realize now I should have used some kind of sealant beforehand to make easier work of cleaning off the cement residue....). I also bought a replacement stone at $72 to replace the one that cracked through, and will use the cracked one to test how the enhancer affects the stone before using on the others...good times! Katie, beautiful house. let me post a bunch of photos so you can see what you prefer. Some are w/the stone you've chosen, and other pics are other surround ideas. here is the shiplap w/diff color/size stone veneer hard to find your smaller size fireplace paired w/shiplap and larger stone. I think a smaller stone might look better, but here are options: This is the only large stone I actually like w/this size fireplace. I like it because of the heavy mortar wash around the stone, I like like the silver/white colors, along w/a few charcoal color stones. This seems to be a big contrast. It might look better if the shiplap was painted dark charcoal or black? Or have you thought about doing the entire thing like this? not really a fan of this color or style. meh also meh don't really care for this one. I was trying to find a white stone, but found this what appears to be a limewashed rock, or, this white quartzite. I think I like a smaller, whiter stone if you want to go this route. here are some w/other tiles and marbl.e I kind of like this look, but using a diff tile, maybe a mosaic marble tile I like this option. the marble herringbone mosaic but with a diff hearth. Or, could you have solid pieces of stone cut and fit around the box? maybe a slate or a basalt or a large format tile? I like a dark stone like basalt or soapstone, but you could choose to do a marble of some type too. Shown here w/a dark mantle. ( I think a whiter stone would have looked better) and if you just did a smooth coat of cement or stucco, or even a Roman plaster Maybe some larger, patterned tile? (I'd use a solid hearth tho) this one is kind of cool.

I have Eldorado stone on mine. It is stoned all the way to the ceiling which is 20' high. I used the river rock. It looks very awesome.

Thanks for the input. I actually did more research and we decided to go with real stone instead. I'll post pics of mine when done too (hopefully in a few more weeks!!)

I used veneer stone on mine over original brick. Very easy. Wet the brick, buttered the stone and pressed in. When I was done used the batter bag to grout with a course bruch with the bristles cut short. Just do it random...don't try to make a pattern. Good luck!
