tiling existing slab

we have exposed concrete floor in our house that we would like to tile. when the house was built we asked for concrete to be a finish floor so it is very level and smooth. it is sealed with solvent based sealer. now i understand that sealer needs to be removed, unless you guys tell me different.
also during first month the slab developed hairline cracks maybe 1/16" thick here and there and concrete is level going over the cracks. do i need to worry about them? the slab is now 5 years old and there were no additional cracks developing or any other problems.
after i remove the sealer, can i just lay directly over the bare concrete? for removing sealer on part of the slab i have used chemical that i dont remember the name but it seemed to remove it good as when i spilled water after it would soak in within minute or so. before it would sit on the sealer for at least 5 minutes. i am just hoping i dont need to use scarifier.
also what groutline thickness is recomended for 12x24 tile. i would like the thinnest. 1/8" ok. and what trovel notch size?

The concrete needs to have the sealer ground off. Chemicals drive the sealer further into the slab and interfere with the adherence of the bedding mortar. You need rectified porcelain tile with a medium mud bed (NOT thinset) to lay large format tile with a small grout line.

This is NOT a DIY job unless you are a very experienced tiler. Even then, you'll have issues. All large format tile installations even by pros have some issues because the floor isn't usually as flat as people think it is, and because of the inherent nature of the tile having a bit of a droop that translates to lippage. Thus the recommendation to do the medium bedding mud rather than thinset by manufacturers. It's easier to address lippage that way.

i have installed tile in my previous house over concrete floor and it went fine. i also did both showers. the tilesused were smaller 12x18 vs 12x24 i am installing now. i used thin set. the sample for this 12x24 tile says to use latex modified thin set too on the back. it is rectified tile. i am not sure what you mean by lippage.

The following possibilities come to mind: First, you could put a linear deck drain along one side. It may be that the slab is not perfectly level, and if not, put the drain on the downhill side. Second, you could put a drain in. Using a core drill, drill a 4-6" hole in the slab. This is doable, I've done it, your local rental place will have a core drill. Then get a sharpshooter shovel and dig under the slab to the hole and install the drain. Third, you could add slope to the floor by adding a thin layer of mortar/concrete whatever, in the same way that they would level a floor before laying tile. I'm not too familiar with this process, help from BW or someone? Fourth, you could elevate the floor with stone, brick, block or other material. Fifth, some combination of 1-4. SB

I wonder if our GC's proposal is overkill. We've just installed new PEX radiant heat panels over existing slab on grade, and now are considering having tile rather than 5/8" engineered wood above the radiant panels (Rehau Raupanel, 8" OC). The Raupanel installation specs diagram for tile installation shows the following layers: - ceramic tile (1/4" typical) - cement or mortar compound w/ mesh or rubber membrane (1/4" typical) [e.g. Schulter Ditra?] - Raupanel + PEX + furring strips - vapor barrier - concrete slab Our GC claims we need to: -tear out the Raupanel and furring strips. -have loops of Pex with a concrete overpour, -then plywood base, a 1/2" backerboard, - and finally the tile in thinset (I think). What's going on? I think the GC said this is for sufficient isolation from expansion, and the tear-out needed to keep the assembly from being almost 1" higher than the adjacent room (5/8" Owens Plankfloor above Raupanel). But some of the GC's solutions have been un-nece$$arily labor-inten$ive, so I've become alert to padded proposals. BTW, His partial quote, for the 50 sq ft room is: "Demo the existing wood furring strips and float the floor and install the owner provided tile. Total cost 2,100.00 (Note the base will be wood provided in an alternate price)" Does that make sense? What should I do next? ------ PS. Should we even be doing tile, vs. e.g., linoleum, if we may have a litter-box and/or pet food bowls in the room? I started imagining urine odor in grout....

I am about 150 miles south and just pulled out all tile and carpet replacing with new tile throughout except 4 bedrooms. i entertained the idea of polished concrete... love the look. But decided on tile and glad I did. Once everything was pulled up, found surprises. Cracks, funky chipped away part in three spots, and at some point some portion had linoleum or something (black glue gunk all over). Plus, if house is built right you should have expansion openings (the are called something fancier). If/when you tear out tile, be sure you have a budget to replace if needed.

What does your municipality say? What does the structural engineer/soils engineer/geologic engineer say about the idea? Someone has to physically design your foundation based on your specific site conditions. That foundation design has to get the approval of your municipality. A slab on grade must have a foundation perimeter and load points that goes into undisturbed subsoil. A concrete contractor should understand that, even if he is not a structural engineer. Or undisturbed subsoil with approved and inspected compaction material. A concrete slab isn’t an approved and inspected compaction material. Not without core samples proving what is under it, and the compaction of the fill that’s under it, and the depth at which you reach undisturbed soil. It also will complicate the required termiticide treatment required under slabs. Doing all of the work and reports to prove that you can use it may cost you more than demolition and rebuilding. Time is money in that regard. Working around the old parts of a building is what makes remodeling cost more than new construction. The input of a concrete contractor is valuable, but he is limited to a single perspective that revolves only around his job portion. He doesn’t understand the interconnected complexity that goes into making his job “arrive and pour”. There’s a lot more engineering that happens before that happens. And the GC is the one that coordinates all of those moving parts that the concrete contractor does not see. Talk to your municipality.

Live Wire is correct about the sealer being driven into the slab. It needs scarification.

As to the cracks...Horizontal displacement can be addressed while vertical displacement precludes a tile floor, it just does. If the former, I would Ditra or Greenskin the floor, assuming it's flat. Variation shouldn't be more than 1/8" over any ten foot span...or you'll need to grind/fill to achieve this.

Both of the above products act as a decoupling membrane to accomodate any lateral movement and cracks developing in the tile.

Measure the smallest and the largest tiles you can find. Whatever the size variation, multiply that by three. That number is the MINIMUM grout width that can be used. (1/8" variation equals 3/8" minimum joint)

Smallest trowel is about 1/4x3/8" Try that, put down a couple of tiles and remove one to check for coverage....shoot for 100%....80% is acceptable. If less than that, move up one trowel size. "Flat Burn" the tiles before setting....
