Greenhouse on existing concrete slab
Comments (3)The following possibilities come to mind: First, you could put a linear deck drain along one side. It may be that the slab is not perfectly level, and if not, put the drain on the downhill side. Second, you could put a drain in. Using a core drill, drill a 4-6" hole in the slab. This is doable, I've done it, your local rental place will have a core drill. Then get a sharpshooter shovel and dig under the slab to the hole and install the drain. Third, you could add slope to the floor by adding a thin layer of mortar/concrete whatever, in the same way that they would level a floor before laying tile. I'm not too familiar with this process, help from BW or someone? Fourth, you could elevate the floor with stone, brick, block or other material. Fifth, some combination of 1-4. Comments (13)You could build you shed right on top of the concrete slab, just like they do with a house on a slab. You didn't say want you wanted to use this shed for but you might want to consider "the lay of the land". Sometimes when slabs are poured for sheds they aren't quit as high above grade as they should be. You don't want to find that the floor of your sheds ends up under water after a heavy rain. To connect the base plate of the wall to the concrete youÂd need to use an expansion type anchor. There are a couple of variations  a wedge type and a sleeve type but they all do the same thing  expand in the hole to make a secure connection to the concrete. Generally speaking things like powder actuated fasteners and "Tapcon" type screws arenÂt sufficient. A hammer drill makes drilling holes in concrete much easier. You can rent one for $20 or so. Any wood that comes in contact with the concrete must be pressure treated. IÂd also run a heavy bead of construction adhesive under the wall base plate to form a seal. A "jack hammer" is generally used for destruction, not construction. You didnÂt mention anything about permits. Many communities require permits for this kind of construction and you local building department can be a useful resource if youÂre less than sure of your carpentry skills. Certainly the inspector isnÂt going to help you drive nails but he can make sure you donÂt get into too much trouble. Good luck! Mike...See Moreflooring over a concrete slab foundation
Comments (3)Thanks , we considered that but had two concerns . First , given that it's a cottage , there will be times when the whole system , heat, water, etc will be shut down , mostly in the winter and we were afraid that the expansion and contraction associated with that could affect a glued down floor also , again because as a cottage , people will be in and out a lot , there could be a fair degree of wear that would mean re-finishing which , as I understand , is a problem with engineered flooring . I was hoping tha there was a new application process for hardwood that I didn't know about such as a sheet underlay with a plywood overlay or something like that . If not , we may have to consider tile throughout ....See MoreHave concrete slab foundation - ANY WAY to run new for bathrooms?
Comments (5)I know of no way to run the drain to an existing stack except under the concrete which means the concrete must be sawn (use a walk-behind wet saw with a diamond blade to cut through concrete and steel reinforcement), broken up, removed and replaced once the job is done. This is a project best left to the pros. Even if another way existed, I doubt you could get code approval. Supply pipes, however, can usually be run through the walls....See MoreSammy
