Laundry room floor recommendation

Hello everyone. I am in the process of redoing my laundry room which is below grade in my basement. Thus far I have installed new molding, hung new dry wall in a few spots, re-painted everything, and have reworked an unusable closet.

Now I am left with a very nice looking room with really ugly flooring. Currently there is linoleum tiles dirrectly on the concrete slab. They come up very easy as they are extremely old and crack very easily.

I am looking for the cheapest and easiest DIY flooring. Total square footage is about 300 sqft. It's an l- shaped room. The only tricky spots would be going around a toilet and shower stall.

You could learn all about pattern scribing and do a glue down sheet vinyl installation. Or, you could looselay one of the new fiber floor sheet floorings using the pattern scribe method and go right over the loose floor tiles. Or, replace with Vinyl Composition Tile or and Laminated Vinyl Tile.

Your old tile could contain asbestos. Just something to know. In the opinion of many flooring professionals, removal of these poses little hazard. You don't want to pulverize the material by sanding, grinding, drilling or doing anything else mechanical to the material that turns it to dust. Or, you can have it tested and hire an asbestos removal company to do the removal for you.

If the adhesive is a black "tarry-looking" substance, you don't want to sand that either. You can skim coat that with Ardex Feather Finish or under the label Henry's or a similar cementious skim coating material.

I'd recommend sheet vinyl. You can pick up some good-looking ones for $1/sq ft or less, cut to size/shape with scissors, and some don't even require glue, just double sided tape around the edges.

I think a farmhouse sink would look fine with that wall mounted faucet. Unfortunately, they tend to be quite a bit more expensive than metal drop-in or the undermount sinks that one usually finds in laundry rooms these days. And farmhouse sinks are a whole LOT more expensive than those plastic looking "utility room" tub sinks that are sometime put in utility rooms. I'm guessing that you DON'T want one of those! For a real vintage sink, have you checked your local Craigslist ads? I've sometimes seen vintage porcelain covered cast-iron sinks posted on our Craigslist that might be just what you're looking for...folks sometimes pull them out when remodeling and the things are so heavy they don't want to sell them on ebay and have to deal with shipping. For the same reason, if Habitat for Humanity has one of their resale shops (ReStore) in your area, you should check there. Oh, and yes, it is a good idea to let the plumber know you're planning on a wall mount faucet. The water line to a wall mount faucet has to go a little bit higher than the lines to a counter mounted faucet. Usually when they run the water lines, they cut them off and cap them a bit longer than they expect to actually need so it probably won't be a problem if the plumber doesn't know. BUT if he does, he can be sure to leave the lines long enough.

the basement laundry smell might have more to do with insufficient air movement ..... every basement i was ever acquainted with... lacked a cold air return at floor level ... so the furnace never really moved air down low .... leading to that wonderful basement scent ... maybe its just a MI thing ... but i am thinking upstairs.... you just arnet going to be dealing with that kind of dead air ... also.. if it does start bugging you ... something like a bathroom exhaust fan would be simple to install in the ceiling... unless you have a second floor ... also ... the dryer will be sucking air outside.. and it has to come from somewhere ... so it will probably exchange the air also ... one thought for sure.. i wouldnt close the door to the cubby while doing laundry .... good luck ken

OMG! I'm so happy to have a working washer/dryer!!! Lowe's delivered a week ago and I'm still trying to catch up on my deferred laundry piles. LOL I said I would report back after my Samsungs were delivered. After only a week, I have to say that I am loving my SAMSUNG set. My laundry room is on the second floor and I was very worried about vibration issues. Verdict-the washer hasn't moved an inch. We didn't even have to fuss with the leveling much during the installation. I feel confident saying that this machine is an excellent choice for a second floor front loader. My loads thus far have been pretty typical - no bath mats or blankets which might be a bit more challenging. I'll have to report back on those later. My clothes seem cleaner and because they come out of the washer pretty well wrung out, the drying cycles take less time than the washing cycles. The machines are really a pleasure to operate. They are so attractive and I really like the chimes, etc... It just feels like such an upgrade from my basic white Maytag top loader set. On a side note: I purchased FloodChek hoses (which are supposed to be superior to the steel braided ones) and one of the hoses leaked!! I was very disappointed! I had to run out to Lowes and buy one of the steel braided hoses until I can get a replacement for the flawed FloodChek.

I gave it to my brother, bcs he was the only person I could think of that could use it, and I wanted *someone* to have it. I tried to get my DH to let me put it in the bathroom, but he refused (he was right--it was very industrial looking). My brother turned out to like it quite a bit. The individual vinyl strips that glue to each other to create a "floating floor" like the Kinectco or the Home Depot Allure (made by Kinectco) would also be a good choice if the floor isn't too humpty bumpty. They area easy to DIY, have a wide variety of decor choices, and the are waterproof when installed correctly.

If you don't anticipate a lot of moisture (like beyond typical bathroom moisture... like children splashing large amounts of water all over the floor) you can go with a floating click-loc engineered hardwood floor. We're using this throughout our downstairs, and installation is (literally) a "snap." We're installing over a wood subfloor, but the product can also go over concrete. In either case, you need to lay a thin foam underlayment. Then, the planks just click and lock together. No glue required. Clean cuts for custom pieces are very easy to get with a table saw. It looks fantastic, wasn't overly-expensive, and is made to hold up to fairly high levels of moisture. (Lots of standing water is bad for it.) I have reservations about the vinyl strips which glue together, as I have seen them come up quite easily... same with vinyl tiles.

Hmm... 300 sq. ft. is a pretty big laundry room, though! Maybe engineered is not the best choice cost-wise. But it is an excellent choice for a DIY floor.
