We moved into our new construction home in June. We put in Eastern white pine floors (one room has walnut) and put a "transparent tung oil" on it that was recommended by the flooring people. I told them I wanted a matte finish, but somehow I was convinced that the "transparent " oil would dull down after mopping. I fell for it. Now, after daily wear and tear and a new puppy, the floor looks like it's 30 years old and in need of major overhaul. The idea that rubbing tung oil over scratches and buffing them in has not worked at all. I believe part of the issue is that the glare from the daylight reflects every flaw.

After talking to the flooring people, they now say a matte finish would help. Gee , thanks. Lesson: always listen to your gut, not the "professionals." Has anyone used the matte tung oil and can you see a lot of scratches with the glare of daylight coming through the windows? Would it be worth it to me to move ALL my furniture and redo all my rooms. PS My downstairs is an open floorplan, so we're talking a huge area at once.

First question is what's actually on your floor now. Pure tung oil doesn't leave anything on the surface, and there are products like Waterlox - which is a mix of resins and pure tung oil - and then there are products like Formby's that's a "Tung Oil Finish" that doesn't contain any tung oil at all.

I've used Waterlox satin on a kitchen/dining table that gets a lot of use, but it's not a thick layer on top of the wood so you see the wood grain more than you see the Waterlox. It gets scrubbed daily and pretty much looks like it did a couple of months ago. And when I want to, I can apply more Waterlox without sanding.

i have used waterlox. it is great finish and very easy to repair when scratched.

I read that wooden boards, when dried, do not harbor bacteria. I use a variety of cutting boards. My two favorites are hard maple. The very large on isy pastry and bread dough board. It never sees water. I use a bench scraper, then a clean damp white cotton terry before storing it (end on). The other, smaller ?Vermont hard maple board I use for anything -- mostly vegetables, but not sopping wet ones. If I slice bread on a nice board, I don't press down past the bottom crust or perhaps lift it. A friend learned that from an experienced German baker. I wipe this board w a clean white terry cloth, damp, not wet. Water or sopping wet good ruin wood. I often add a bit of chlorine bleach to my light soap and water, wring out till damp. Wipe w clear barely damp clean cloth. Store vertically on edge. I do not put oil on my boards, but if I were to, I would use a thin coat of fine mineral oil, then wipe it off. Oil can collect dust and odors. For something like watery meat, chicken, lobster guts <g>, I use the plastic/nylon boards that I also clean up w bleach soap and water and or run through the dishwasher. I have bamboo boards too and these are easy to clean (wipe, never soak, never dishwasher). I think non-bamboo hardwoods are the kindest to sharp knife edges. Just clean up as you go along. BTW, I never put food prepping knives that I value in the dishwasher, nor do I leave them in the sink where the blade can get chipped or the handle get mongey. Quick wash and rinse and dry take less time than opening the catalog to find a replacement. And not a good knives need to cost a lot. If my boards want to slide or rock on a solid surface, I put a few small silicone cupboards door quiet stop circles here and there. I love hardwood cutting / pastry boards!

Hi, The product you need to stop your finish from gelling is called Bloxygen. Call a woodworking shop in your area - that is where you are likely to find it. Big box stores do not carry it. Don't bother with the marbles in the can - that never worked for me. I have stored oil based finishes using Bloxygen for months and when reopened they are like new. I'm not convinced that human greenhouse gas production is going to damage the environment significantly, but I think it needs more study. ************ We are in complete agrement here. I do not believe that the CO2 from burning wood is going to destroy the planet. But many kooks do. And fireplace woodsmoke doesn't go that high into the atmosphere to cause damage. So we are on the exact same page. My point is that we are experiencing global warming, and we can do nothing about it as we now see on other planets. This lends a lot of credibility to the theory that the SUN is causing it. As it has many times before. Because we in Vermont and you in Connecticut at one time were under sheets of ice sometimes a mile thick. And I still ask: What caused the massive "global warming" that melted those glaciers 10,000 years ago? It wasn't my Ford Expedition or MSBROOKS fireplace.

I had to look at this thread since I get curious how a thread from 9 years ago gets bumped-------but I see the response above my comment is from @les917. I have a shiny (ish) tung oil on it now. I'm looking to tone down the glare, hoping to camoflage (sp?) the thousands of scratches from the dog and other things. Those who have a satin or dull finish, does it glare much?

You need to find out the actual name of the finish used. Even if it was called a "tung oil" finish, it might or might not even be tung oil based.

It's the Carlisle brand. They say it's waterlox with some of their own hardening agents in it. They said I should try Waterlox Satin to try to tone the shine down. No polyurethane involved. They said I could put more tung oil over it. I just want to know if the finish I have will really dull down, or if the satin tung oil will really help the scratches be less noticable.

On the waterlox site they have instructions about how to achieve different gloss levels (which they also note are subjective.) There they say to use two coats of the satin over one or two coats of the Original (which is glossier) so it sounds like you're in luck.

There a lot of photos on the site so you should get an idea of what it looks like.

It looks more reflective here than it appears in real life.

Is there any way you can get a sample of the wood with the current finish on it that you can scratch up and then test with the satin? I think it's probably what you're looking for but before you start such a big job...
