White haze marks all over hardwood floors!

I hired a new cleaning person. She was instructed to use vinegar and water only. I know she did because it reaked of vinegar. I started noticing white hazey marks on the floors. You can scratch it off in some areas with your fingernail. It's getting worse though. Big areas of hazy marks. What has she done to my floors? Is there anything I can do? I wonder if she used something with the vinegar that is leaving a residue. If so, how can I get it off without harming the puly finish? They has 3 coats of poly.

Is she using her mop or yours.

She may be spreading muck, instead of actually cleaning it. Get on YOUR hands and knees and using just water on a well rang out wash cloth, and clean the floor, then buff with a dry towel before it can streak. See if that takes care of it.

Vinegar and water is Ok to use very sparingly. Please do not make that a routine maintenance.... use a cleaner made for that.

I am not an expert at all but it occurred to me that you may have incompatible products on the floor. When you have solvent and wax based products the result is sticky or dull etc. To get it all off I used to use mineral spirits. I worked the 800# for a floor wax for a bit and this is what would happen if someone used a wax and then Murphy's Oil Soap. Before you try this, to see if you have two incompatible products on the floor. Did anyone use Murphys or any paste wax or any other kind of wax?

When it comes to hardwood, trends are something to ignore! Why? Because hardwood is pretty much a lifetime purchase, and unless yours is damaged in some way, you're probably not going to replace it. So, light wood vs. dark wood, wide planks vs. narrow planks -- that stuff's all going to come and go. With that in mind -- as well as the very real concerns about cleaning dark wood -- I'll vote for a nice, neutral midtone every time. Not too much contrast, not too red, and (unless it's a beach house) not too pale. I think this is the wood that's most likely to give you good service and stand the test of time.

JFCI, Will try increasing the concentration. CFI, I asked around - some went up as high as $1.25/sqft. One of them was more reasonable at $0.75/sqft, but after speaking with him I realized that I'd have to move all my furniture out of the way. My floor plan is a little weird - the main living area is split up into two halves by the kitchen in the middle. One side of the kitchen forms the living/dining/great room and the other my home office making this a two day job because of moving around the furniture. I will call upon the pros in the future for a complete floor facelift - right now, I'm just going to try this by hand so that my floors don't look like they've been pulled from a warehouse. I'm considering getting a handheld polisher like this one - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-18-Volt-ONE-10-in-Orbital-Buffer-Tool-Only-P435/205975768 to help with removing the sludge. This will also give me the flexibility to work around my schedule/furniture. I couldn't find any mildly abrasive pads, but I reckon the microfiber/cloth pads that come with the tool should suffice at high enough speeds. Will update once I get out and but this thing! You are correct in that using a drum sander is not at all DIY friendly. But it's the only way to correctly sand a floor down to smooth and ready to finish. You will take years trying to do the same thing with an orbital. The rental rate for the sander is going to be more than hiring the right pro with the right equipment.

Ok, so vinegar and water is not ok to use? That's what my flooring people tell me to use. She is using my mop so I know she is not spreading anything. The only thing I can think of is she is putting something else in the mix or using too much vinegar.

I went out and bought some Bonax. I will have her use that instead since I don't think she can goof that up.

I did read on another forum said to use windex to get the spots up. It worked. So now I just need to keep them that way. lol

Thundersweet, have you used the Bonax on your floors yourself? I strongly suggest that you experiment a bit with cleaning your floors, since sometimes cleaning people use what they're told and the Homeowner doesn't realize that the product doesn't work as well as it might. Vinegar can cause haze.

Same problem here, I think. We just moved into a new home with engineered hardwood floors. Cleaned them with Bona and noticed one area that didn't get clean--there is a hazy blotch about 6" long that almost looks like someone spilled something on it. Any suggestions?
