From your post, it sounds like you have a pre-fab woodburning fireplace. A woodburning insert is something totally different. You should check on your local codes before attempting sticking some gas logs in there. Some areas require a permit first. Some also require glass doors and the damper permanently cut out to use the gas logs.

At least some! Perhaps a blower so that the BTU's actually come into the space v. traveling up the front? Or, perhaps tell us that this is for decoration only and suggest alternatives...like the heaters we eliminated in favor of the fireplace? These heaters seem to work in an open air environment; why not a fireplace? I am obviously not a thermal expert but I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

Thank you all for the advice everyone. It looks like it is cemented into the stone, if that makes sense. ShashaDog I will contact them and find out. BF, I am a straight forward person, I can own up to it when making a mistake. Building a home was my dream and I had every detail planned out. Honestly they screwed up a lot of things. The light fixtures that were supposed to be put in were not. They screwed the bathroom tiles. The wrong garage door color and style was put in. The wrong handles on the kitchen cabinets were put in. During selections the man I was working with was texting on his phone and making calls and taking calls. He was extremely rude, I told them that I didn’t wanna work with him anymore, but by that time the selections were made. They did replace the garage door, but that was about it. It’s all good, I’m healthy, I have an amazing family, these are all little things that can be replaced. This was a learning experience for me. I’ll use that knowledge when building my next home. I really appreciate the advice.

The HUGE drawback to a conventional fireplace is that they draw their combustion from the house. You may be heating one area but other areas are being cooled/chilled from the outside air being sucked through leaks. Go with a direct vent sealed combustion gas insert. A direct vent gas appliance is a closed combustion system, sealed off from the living environment of your home. Outside air flows though a sealed pipe, directly to the burner. Exhaust gas flows back outdoors through a separate sealed pipe. There are two types of Direct Vent systems; Coaxial and Colinear. These types of units can really heat a house! So good are they that I have had to modify my return air ductwork to pull the room heat out (to keep that room tolerable) and get it back to the furnace blower to circulate around the house. I have two such Jotul units, a gas fireplace (Accadia GZ550) and a free-standing gas stove (Sebago GF400). Caution: a quality product will cost substantial $$.
