What wood are you choosing? Stain is radically different from wood to wood and what works on maple won't be anywhere near the same on cherry.

What you really need to do is to have your flooring professional prepare several samples for you on your particular floor in your home with your lighting. All of that will impact the color that you end up with. That service should have been included as part of his proposal to you.

Based off that picture im not positive its a single color straight from a can.
But a good start would be golden brown possibly lighten with neutral and a splash of red.

Thanks gregmills - you are correct - the designer did Walnut with a touch of ebony on Red Oak.

Just trying to avoid the mixing ordeal & see if we can get a close match out of a can on our Red Oak.

That's Red Oak? Looks more like rift and quarter sawn White Oak to me.

Yes, the flooring in the pictures is definitely white oak.

Well that's from the horse's mouth, so I guess it must be white oak, but it sure doesn't look like that to me.

I wouldn't bet the farm that the architect knows the difference between the two. It is odd though, that he thinks it's the cheaper product when it actually appears to be a more expensive wood. It's also a bit harder to source quarter and rift red than white.

He's repeated it several time with different version of the same question. No reason to doubt him.

& he spec'd White Oak on another one of his projects listed under his bio on houzz.

So it's not like he's unfamiliar with it & it's not like he's never build a house before.

Some time the PC monitor & eyes betray even the most critical cynics...I guess.
