What chair pad to protect your office flooring?

Can you tell me what you use under your office chair to protect your laminate flooring from getting worn? I know the laminate is durable, but with a lot of rolling over the years I would assume it could get ruined. I do not want that to happen. I don't like the looks of those ugly clear rubber floor pads. Are there any other options out there that are safe for the floor? Thanks

I would just insure that the chairs had the proper rollers on them and not even bother with pads. The rollers for hard surfaces are softer than those for carpets, so they shouldn't affect the flooring very much. High heels probably are much harder on the flooring than the rollers.

Having worked in offices that had carpet tiles in most areas, almost every chair had one of those dreaded pads. We once developed a mold problem, and when the technical folks came in to take measurements, some of the worst areas were under those pads. Although we had carpet tiles that were readily replaceable, new ones don't always match up very well with the older tiles, color-wise. We also had to get all new pads that had more holes in them so as not to trap moisture. Carpet is quieter than the laminate flooring, though, so there are pros and cons on each side.

Anyway, I would focus on high-quality rollers for the chairs instead of any pads. Good luck!

Hi Brutuses, nice to see you over here! We got special casters on my office chair to protect our hardwood, and I'm thinking the same thing could work to protect laminate. Lee Kaspy at Service Caster can help you over the phone. All we did was tell him our need, email him a photo of our caster shank and he sent us exactly the right ones for the floor. They didn't mar the last hardwood office and they are doing fine here in the new house too.

I do have the same issue, since my toddler is very active he loves to pull n push the furniture, which leaves scratches on my wooden floors. Well I tried different types of felt pads, but those tend to fall off or tear apart, but then I tried these felt pads by Teleon brand and I simply love these, bought those on Amazon( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01LBG9JNK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489443479&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=teleon+felt+pads&dpPl=1&dpID=41kQOaDbjqL&ref=plSrch) these are supper sticky and 1/4" thick, the color matches and blends in my furniture color. These come in a huge pack that is good enough for my whole house, infact I could save so many pieces for next turn. Now now scratches on my floor yeyy!

Yes, I confess, I am a closet clean freak. I try to pretend I am not but really I can not help it. I don't love to clean, I just can't relax if I walk on a floor with even one tiny little sand grit on my foot. Even with college roomates I was the girl cleaning at 3 am. While everyone was passed out drunk. I was raised this way. You should see my sisters. We all scrub our floors on hands and knees. No one walks in our homes with shoes on. Every night before bed I wipe down the floors in the kitchen. Maids quit with me they don't get fired. : ) I must be from a long line of cleaning ladies... When I gave birth to my first child, my mother and aunts arrived. My husband was shocked to find one aunt scrubbing the sidewalk in front of our home. She bleached the steps and walkway. It was then DH realized that he married into a family of clean freaks. Sorry to go off topic. I guess this is why the felt pads work for my floor. I always recommend purchasing the 'felt only' pads (Rona, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc all have a version) and then using a hot glue gun to attach the pads. The contact cement glue (like the stuff we used to use in school) will do the job as well. And yes, the sticky stuff can be removed using a little bit of cooking oil (a quick squirt of Pam will also do the trick). Wipe up the goo. You will be left with a bit of an oil slick which is very easy to remove. Windex is a mild degreaser and is safe for 95% of all wood finishes (hardwax oil finishes an wax finishes are the two that need special handling). Yes it is "2 cleanings" but both are super easy and utilize product that 99% of people have in their home right now.

What type of protective material/padding for closet over wood floor?

Consider cork flooring which can be purchased at your local home store and cut to size. They also may carry rubber flooring used in home gyms, however since this is thicker it may be harder to cut.

Seattle and bigdoglover, thanks so much. BDL, I'm going to keep that phone number handy when I'm ready for the chairs.

I didn't even think about the rollers. DUH!! That's why we ask, right? LOL

Brutuses, exactly, that's why we have each other. I didn't think of casters either -- had one of those plastic thingies under my chair, until moisture started forming underneath it, which apparently can happen on a slab when you cover it with plastic. (Builder said just put a piece of plastic on your garage floor and see what happens underneath. Sure enough, in a few days a moist spot appears.) Anyway, it turned out to be a leak in the wall, which was resolved; but nonetheless, it turned us away from plastic chair pads (which spoil the look of the floor too.) As my designer back at the old house said, it's like putting a condom on your floor. Excuse the colorful metaphor, but she was full of them and the funnest decorator anyone could ever want.
