I live in Bluffton, which is 7 miles from HHI and 20 from Savannah. Daufuskie is just a short boat ride from our dock. What were you wanting to know?

Do you take the ferry from HHI? That is where we would prefer to drive to. Have you been on the island? I have seen the exit signs before when we've been in that area but until recently didn't realize exactly where it is. We love Savannah also. We are thinking of visiting the island, probably next spring. Love the fact that it is no cars!!!

Hi Tina,
I have a place in HHI (hence my hhireno screenname). We went over to Daufuskie a few years ago. We did take the ferry from the HHI & it was maybe a 45 minute boat ride? It was worth a few hours to drive around in the golf cart, have lunch, and see the island. I don't remember there being a whole lot of things to do & see but it was a pleasant afternoon.

At that time, they were in the process of building another golf resort but I think that the project was stopped because of the bad economy. I don't know if they ever finished it. Maybe Nanny has more current info about the island.

We took the ferry back with the construction workers ending their work day. The boat was riding so low in the water, due to all the people and all those heavy tool boxes, I was afraid we would sink.

Hey Nanny, maybe someday we should meet for lunch when I'm down at my place! If we time it right, Tina can join us.

Thank you Jean! You were who I was thinking of. We love the less populated/less commercial areas. We frequent Seabrook and Kiawah Islands and have also stayed on Harbour Island and Fripp.

Apparently there is a plush resort on Daufuskie and a quite a well known golf course. Plantations at one time were in this area. I got more interested after seeing a home there on Cote De Texas and the gorgeous scenery. So then looked at some rentals on VRBO.

I'm assuming there is a ferry also to/from Savannah?

Hi Tina,
The golf resort there was beautiful and I think we ate lunch there. I remember we saw a beautiful little church and the one room school house were Pat Conroy taught. It was a charming place, well worth a visit.

I did think it was odd how there would be small original home next door to a big, new, 2nd home looking place - made me wonder about the zoning rules, or lack of them. That poor original family home being dwarfed by a McMansion.

I imagine there are boats from Savannah, which is also a nice place to visit (when it's not hot & humid). Maybe Nanny will have more detailed info for you.

Oh yes, we've been to Savannah many times. Savannah and Charleston are two favorite places for us.

I forgot about Pat Conroy teaching there - I did read that!

I don't believe there are any public boats from Savannah that dock at Daufuskie, but I may be wrong. As far as I know, the only way to get there is by private boat, or by taking one of the ferries from Hilton Head Island at Broad Creek Marina.

Tina, I saw that article on Cotedetexas about Daufuskie, too. IT was an interesting house that Joanie featured.

DH and I have visited Daufuskie a few times, getting there from our dock only takes about 20 minutes. We docked there and had lunch at one of the little restaurants close to the marina. Many, many years ago, we took a little golf cart tour of the island, but that was before there had been so much development done. DH's father, who is now deceased, was friends of one of the men who had lived on Daufuskie all his life - that gentleman is now deceased, also. I remember touring the lighthouse building at Haig Point, which I don't even know if that still remains.

Our experiences there were so long ago, I don't know much else to tell you, I heard that one of the developments there went bankrupt and closed down a couple years ago. Things locally have been so stagnant on the real estate market, (no sales to speak of), that information isn't surprising, a lot of the local developments are having problems. We are just across the river from Palmetto Bluff - another lovely area, and I've heard they've had their share of financial problems, too.

In this month's HHI Monthly magazine, there is an article "The 7 wonders of Hilton Head". Numbers 6 and 7 are on Daufuskie - the Bloody Point Lighthouse (not a traditional tower but a 2-story home) and the Strachan Mansion on Haig Point (which was moved there via barge from 100 miles up the intracoastal waterway). If you get to Daufuskie, be sure to check them out.

In case you're wondering the other 5 things were: loggerhead turtles (they nest on HHI from May-Oct), dolphin strand feeding, Braddock Point cemetery (for native African-Americans), the Sea Pines Forest Preserve (605 acres of unspoiled nature), and singing sands (audible sound vibrations).

The cover of the mag is about Pirate Cruises. I'm guessing that you don't need the details about those! Arrrr, can you imagine how awful those would be? Sure, sure...great for kids but for those of us without? Yikes.

Maybe Nanny and her mates (I assume by her screen name there are kids & grandkids) would enjoy the Pirate cruise. If she doesn't get the magazine I'd be happy to share the details with her.

Thanks for the info Jean! I wonder if I could find that magazine online? We are going to Cashiers/Highlands next month, renting a cottage. The lady we are renting from recently sent me a copy of a similar magazine for their area. I had asked about antiquing in the area, and the magazine had loads of info!

Kathleen that is the house I saw in the blog post. Cote Di Texas did a post on it a while back. I take Southern Living and also saw that article. Seeing more of the island got me interested. We may travel there next Spring.
