Holiday Party/Drinks?

Hi,

Planning a holiday party...cocktails and hors d'ouvres. My question is what kind of a liquor should I have in my liquor cabinet? Of course we'll have wine and beer, but don't know exactly what else I should have on hand. Any suggestoins would be appreciated!

I am not much of a drinker but we keep various types of liquer for guests and for when my husband wants a cocktail. We usually have on hand some good whiskey, rum, tequila, scotch and vodka And for coffee with a pep, we have Frangelica, Ameretto, Bailey's Irish cream and KAhluia...HOpe this helps some...

Good suggestions on the previous post, I also have on hand as a basic- gin, grenadine, flavored brandy, and juices such as cranberry, orange, and grapefruit. Enjoy your party! NancyLouise

How about hot spiced drinks? Mulled wine. Hot apple cider. Either with or without booze. I suggest apple schnapps for cider or wine. Lemon infused vodka or rum can go well too. Hot Toddies made with bourbon, are great for fall or holidays. Hot Buttered Rum crosses seasons too. Make all of these from scratch. It's easy. Mixes are crap. If some of your guests do not care for hot drinks how about making traditional a Old Fashion. Make from scratch. Use a cinnamon stick for a stir stick and float and orange slice for garnish. Another cold drink for fall is the Moscow Mule (Vodka and Ginger Beer plus lime). I would offer guests drinks that they just can't get at the average bar. Something that will get them to take notice and remember, but something that isn't too wacky and seems soothing and homey. Although more of a winter holiday drink, I think you could do hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. Or with Irish Cream. Is this just a cocktail party with nibbles or is there going to be a meal? You have to match your menu to the spicy sweeter drinks. If you limit your drink menu to drinks the guests have not tried before, guests tend to drink less. Not that they don't enjoy them, but they tend to savor them rather than guzzle. It saves money and you don't have to worry about "Bill" or "Bob" knocking back fifteen gin and tonics, or whatever 'their' drink is.

Suzie, I'm not able to offer much help in the dessert category but I can tell you that if I were your neighbor, I'd love to come for a little dessert, but I would most definitely appreciate something 'not sweet' and 'not dessert'. That's just me, and maybe I'm not alone. Personally, I like a little something sweet once in a while, but not too much and not too often. So, I'd be delighted to come to your party for the friendship and camaraderie, but I'd be really happy if you had something simple like chips and salsa to offer also. (Doesn't need to be a lot or anything fancy, just something to cut the sweetness.) One of my favorite savory 'cookie' is: BLUE CHEESE WALNUT BITES (BHG 2000) 1-1/2 cups all purpose flour 2-3 teaspoons cracked black pepper 8 ounces blue cheese 1/4 cup butter 1 cup chopped walnuts 2 egg yolks, slighty beaten In a medium mixing bowl combine flour and pepper. Using a pastry blender cut in cheese and butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add walnuts and egg yolks. Stir until combined. Form the mixture into a ball; knead until combined. Divide dough in half. shape each half into a log about 9 inches long. Wrap logs in plastic wrap, chill at least 2 hours. Preheat oven to 425* Cut each log into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until bottoms and edges are golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temp. Store tightly covered. Almond Pinecones: 1 1/4 c. Starting at pointy end of cone place overlapping almonds in a scaly fashion to make them resemble cones. Garnish top ends of cones with pine, if available in your area. Simply adorable, and delicious. Serve with crackers. Very seasonable. Tip: Don't store with the almonds in place for more than several hours, as they will become soggy from the dip.

Westsider--Yes, I found a Pratt and Larson tile. I was supposed to get a couple of samples in the correct size and color last week, but they messed up my order again. I'll post pics when it gets here, unless they have another "miscommunication" at the showroom. The party was a success!! I'm not sure what happened with the people who made comments over the last months about arugula being a nasty weed and that capers were sickening, but everyone ate, and ate, and ate, and enjoyed the food! The woman who couldn't believe she ate capers stopped in her tracks when I told her that she also ate anchovies in that tapenade so loved so much. I received lots of praise during and after the party. Thank you all for your help. Most importantly, everyone, including me, had a great time. The group was smaller than expected as none of the husbands came, and a couple of families had the flu strike them at school that day. I think it all worked out for the best as we women just gathered in the kitchen to laugh, listen to Christmas music, talk, and eat apps while I finished plating and garnishing the main course. It was just how I hoped it would be. I ended up spending more time the night before on my son's project and having another commitment at my son's school that day, so I had to adjust the menu a bit to accommodate less cooking time. For apps I did a sour cream, herb, and cucumber dip with fresh veggies and blanched haricot verts and asparagus as suggested. I also did tapenade with crostini and Kathy Casey's sexy baked olives and feta. For the main course I did the cold beef fillet with sherry wine vinaigrette served on arugula with shaved red onions, haricot verts with walnuts and lemon vinaigrette, scalloped blue cheese potatoes, and the citrus salad with mint sugar. For dessert, I made the eggnog tiramisu trifle, cream cheese swirl brownies, and leftover lemon ginger cookies. We drank lots of prosecco, wine, and the hot buttered rum I made for the first time. The kids drank the spiced apple cider. I also had a beverage dispenser filled with water, lemons, and cucumber a friend termed "spa water." Sounds so snobby to me. ;) For compumom, here are the three recipes for which you asked. Add 1 1/4 c pitted kalamatas, 4 drained anchovy fillets, 2 T capers, 2 t lemon juice, and about 4-5 T EVOO and process until coarsely pureed. Ok, got more information on a substitute drink for New Year's. Its made with Ice tea, ginger ale, and sugar, lots of sugar. Its not good for dieters or those who are avoiding sugar, but it does have a refreshing boost - caffeine and sugar. According to my source, she thinks it was about half ginger ale and half ice tea. First, put the sugar in the bowl - don't know why, but that the way it was made. Maybe it to preserve as much fizz as possible. Sugar into bowl 2. Pour in the ice tea and stir to dissolve the sugar. (Leave room for the ginger ale.) 2. Gently pour in the ginger ale, maybe sliding the liquid down the side of the bowl. The object is to preserve as much of the fizz as possible. Gently stir to mix. 3. Test taste before serving. You wouldn't want to serve a bad batch. Leaving some space in the bowl provides space to adjust by adding more ginger ale or ice tea, or other flavor. Don't be concerned if the bowl is not full. If the demand is high, its easy to mix another batch provided you have enough ingredients on hand. The drink looks like beer, tastes surprisingly good, and has a caffeine/sugar kick. I also am planning a big cocktail dinner buffet party. I bought Bombay gin, Kettle one Vodka and Smirnoffs, Dewers scotch, Canadian club and Jim Beam...and will put out light and dark vermouth, Rose's lime, lemons, olives, cherries....and lots of champagne, white wine and beer....as well as soft drinks and mixers.
I like to avoid red wines, and cranberry juice as well as grenadine for a big cocktail party....saves the furniture!

I like Swedish Glogg or Wassial (hot mulled wine) served from the steaming crockpot. It warms the body like few other things can. It is served in mugs so it is not so likely to tip and spill. Just be sure to have your guests choose a designated driver for each carload (people tend to carpool to get here) since it packs a good kick.

Mistletoe Martinis - mix 4 parts vodka with 1 part Midori liquor, pour in glass that has been dipped in colored sugar, hang a small candy cane from edge

add a splash of grenadine

the red settles to the bottom making the drink both red and green - perfect for xmas parties!

Quick tip on flavored martinis....

For those of you that love the taste, but can't afford to be snockered inthe first 30 minutes, you can try substituting club soda for some parts of the vodka/gin.

For instance, in my sour apple martinis, I use vodka, apple pucker and club soda...shaken with ice...

Taste is light and easily drinkable...but you can actually have more than a few without falling down. Adds no calories or taste to the recipe...just be sure not to mix up tonic water with soda water!

Go with some easy mixed drinks, maybe some with a holiday flavor... Some of my favorites are egg nog (with rum or brandy), sangria, and mulled cider.
